* In ''Franchise/MagicTheGathering,'' this happened during the development of the card [[https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=teferi%27s+protection+%28game%3Apaper%29 Teferi's Protection.]] The developers were trying to make a card that made the player and everything they controlled "disappear" from the game until their next turn (making them invincible, but unable to do anything until they came back), but were having trouble making it work. Eventually, one of the developers got the then-crazy idea to make the card use Phasing, a former ScrappyMechanic from MTG's early history. The set designer left a comment on the design asking who the wiseguy was who put a card with ''Phasing'' in the set. When the wiseguy stepped forward and admitted to it, the designer replied with a "Carry on, then." The card ended up being so well-received, Phasing (specifically ''phasing out'') was RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap and became a recurring mechanic.[[note]]To be specific, early Phasing was a ScrappyMechanic because cards with Phasing would blink in and out so they could only be used every other turn, making them very obnoxious to actually use. However, making a card ''phase out'' simply makes it act like it doesn't exist for a turn, and ended up being very useful as a way to temporarily get rid of something in play, either to avoid having to deal with it or to keep an opponent from harming it, while avoiding the [[ObviousRulesPatch rules baggage]] of actually removing the card and then returning it to play.[[/note]]
