Ordinary substances being intoxicants for aliens (or similarly otherworldly beings) is very likely to feature in some kind of story featuring aliens. It can be serious; for example, exploring the ramifications of [[{{Worldwar}} ginger addiction]]. Of course, it can also be PlayedForLaughs, because it's funny to watch an alien getting trashed on Gummi Bears.

The name probably comes from the fact that catnip is often treated as marijuana in furry comics.
