[[spoiler: It does come back to bite it in the end, though. Prescott Nagle takes advantage of his own frequent memory lapses to stymie the Eater's mind reading and make an effective weapon out of something he can never remember the name for. Had the Eater just killed him instead of trying to figure out what Nagle was hiding and what his plan was, it would have been victorious.]]
