* DarkSecret: What happened at Carhaiz. The Rebellion's propaganda is that Phobos' forces were creating a new weapon, and they valiantly destroyed it. In truth, [[spoiler:Carhaiz was the nobility's attempt to create a society for the smallfolk free of being controlled by either Phobos or the rebels, who viewed such a hope as a detriment to their goals, so they slaughtered the village.]]

* LongGame: The Ludmoore family has been plotting against Meridian for a long time.

* AntiMagic: The Ben Shui Chosen One can cancel out Chi Magic in the surrounding area.

** In Chapter 29, Mariko and Liam show up to claim [[spoiler: Ikazuki's mask]] from the heroes. Since they're disguising their identities won't properly explain themselves, the heroes assume that they're villains who want [[spoiler: the mask]] for themselves, when they really want to destroy it. This leads to a brief fight, that ends when Mariko's disguise is knocked off and she and Liam flee.

** At one point during the big fight in Chapter 32, Will jabs her thumb into Phobos' eye. It doesn't destroy the eye, but does make it bleed.

* NotSoDifferent:

* NotSoSimilar: Yan Lin eventually realizes that for all her worries about Will and Jade being NotSoDifferent from Nerissa, they still have their compassion, which Nerissa lost.

* RealityEnsues:
** WarIsHell is in full effect, and it's made clear that people on both sides of the fight ''have'' died.
** There are good and bad people on both sides of the fight.
** Jade encounters a soldier she attacked when sneaking into Torus Finley, and the PTSD from it, and well as injuries that weren't treated as well as she thought, have left him a shell of his former self.
** Phobos' tendencies towards being a BadBoss really come back to bite him on the ass, eventually turning ''his entire court'' against him. Even those who don't start actively plotting against him, like Lothar, end up distancing themselves from him, instead becoming as focused on protecting the civilian population from his cruelty as they are on fighting the Rebellion.
** As Servantis reveals in Chapter 13, during her reign Queen Weira did something unheard of -- she gave some commoners, some village chiefs and mayors, rule over the others. It wasn't an overly complicated idea; just give the commoners an authority of their own in order to make them feel empowered and take some responsibilities from the nobles, an intermediary between them and the smallfolk. Servantis even admits that it wasn't that bad an idea in principle, but then goes on to explain that suddenly being given all that power corrupted some of the selected leaders, leading to them staging a small revolution and killing some nobles before being put down. Afterwards, the smallfolk blamed the nobles just for defending themselves, which only heightened tensions more.
** After fleeing from her calling out, Elyon has to stop several times on her way back to the capital, both from the simple fact that she only recently developed her flying abilities and has some trouble maintaining control, as well as having only a vague idea of where she has to go.
** [[spoiler: Phobos agrees to let Elyon see her imprisoned adoptive parents in part because he's confident that he can just put a spell on them so they say whatever he wants them to.]]
** While her initial reaction is to cling to denial and flee, having time to think about [[spoiler: Alchemy]] and the others said about her selfishness and Phobos' evil means that it actually starts to get through to her.

* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: The Tracker is ''pissed'' when the heroes manage to defeat [[spoiler: Ikazuki]] before he can.

* ZeroPercentApprovalRating: Phobos, with everyone -- the Rebellion, the commoners, and even his own minions -- all hating him.

* FamilyThemeNaming: All the Ludmoore brothers have names that start with a "C". It also turns out that their father did, too.

Drake/Cyrus shapeshifts into his Beast form to join the fight. Nerissa intervenes to take Roberta out of the fight. Caleb overuses the Sword of Thanatos for the fight, and is fully corrupted by it.
