Light is not, and was never, a god, which is the entire point of the ending both in the manga and the anime. He dies when Ryuk writes his name in the Death Note exactly like Ryuk said would happen when they first met, showing that for all his grandstanding about being a God, in the end Light was still just human.

** Not to mention, after he becomes the 'God of the New World' [[spoiler:i.e. killed L]] when his god complex reaches its height, [[spoiler:he ends up getting shot. [[BewareTheNiceOnes By Matsuda.]]]]

** Before ''Super'' even brought in Gods, ''Anime/DragonBallZFusionReborn'' had Goku and Vegeta killing Janemba: an eldritch RealityWarper being created from all the evil in the universe and the afterlife who was way stronger than Super Saiyan 3 Goku who can shake hell and heaven just by powering up. Granted Goku and Vegeta needed to perform the FusionDance to do so.

Added DiffLines:

** Broly in ''Anime/DragonBallSuperBroly'' provides an inversion. Despite both Goku and Vegeta being literal gods in their divine red and blue Super Saiyan forms, Broly beats the living shit out of both of them despite having no God Ki. He didn’t even have to use his SuperMode until later on.
** ''Anime/DragonBallSuperSuperHero'' sees Gohan beaming Cell Max, a ''Film/ShinGodzilla''-esque abomination through the skull. Not only was Cell Max explicitly stronger than Goku and Vegeta but he had to the potential to be stronger than Broly too.
*** Gohan just has a real knack for this, [[Anime/DragonBallZDeadZone in the first Z movie]] he withstood the pull of the Dead Zone and instead knocked Garlic Junior into it, while in the aforementioned ''Fusion Reborn'' he obliterated Frieza in his final form with a single freaking punch.
** In ''Anime/SuperDragonBallHeroes'' Gogeta takes down Hearts when he was empowered by the Universe Seed which explicitly makes him as as omnipotent as Zeno. Even Jiren was taken aback.

Considering Tetsuo's penchant for [[YourHeadAsplode never letting anyone get within ten feet of him,]] the fact that Kaneda manages this just by marching in and [[BavarianFireDrill barking commands at him]] says something for his confidence (or Tetsuo's lack of it).

** Then, Goku fighting King Piccolo after drinking the divine water, and even ending up killing him.
** In the Saiyan Saga, Raditz, who was effortlessly stomping Goku and Piccolo, gets taken down by Piccolo's Makankosappo.
** Also in the Saiyan Saga, Krillin's Kienzan managing to put a cut on Nappa's face. Keep in mind, Nappa was so strong he appeared to be invincible to the point where Piccolo thought he was immortal.
** In the Frieza Saga, Krillin cutting off Frieza's tail, Piccolo managing to knock second form Frieza around, and Goku using Kaio-ken x20 to cause visible pain to final form Frieza definitely qualify. Goku very nearly killed Frieza using the Spirit Bomb had the former not lucked out.
** In the Cell Saga, Tenshinhan, a mere human (who is an ant compared to Cell and the Super Saiyans), managed to bombard Semi-Perfect Cell with his Shin Kikoho to delay him long enough for the Androids to escape.
** Pretty much anyone who fought Majin Buu before Super Saiyan 3 Goku, and managed to do actual damage would have qualified. Considering Buu was stronger than
literal version gods at that point. Majin Vegeta takes the most credit, as he succeeded in denting and putting holes all over Buu.
** There was that time in the Buu Saga where [[TookALevelInBadass Mystic Gohan]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baXNH3YWqx0 punched out Super Buu.]]
*** From the same arc, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCz1afSgm8M Goku managed to hold off Super Buu]] [[TheAssimilator with Gotenks and Piccolo absorbed.]]
** By the end
of the trope series, the Saiyan cast could easily be said to be stronger than the universe's ''actual gods''.
** Speaking of which, in the canon movie ''Anime/DragonBallZBattleOfGods'', Vegeta successfully punched Beerus (for backhanding Bulma, who slapped him), who really ''is'' a god, several times. Before then, not even Super Saiyan 3 Goku or Ultimate Gohan could touch him.
** Jiren is supposed to even stronger than a God of Destruction. [[spoiler:Goku

** Not really on the Cthulhu level compared to the DBZ-universe's standards of what qualifies as godlike, but [[LovableCoward Yajirobe]] slicing off Great Ape Vegeta's tail

* The main plot of ''Edens Bowy'' revolves around god hunters, humans who have the power to slay gods, and thus protect humanity from divine enslavement.
* In ''LightNovel/FateZero'', Saber [[SwordBeam Excaliblasts]] Cthulhu. As in the ''actual'' [[Franchise/CthulhuMythos Cthulhu,]] summoned by her enemy Caster.
** And before this, Rider, who helps Saber out with Caster's Cthulthu, gives a badass speech to Waver about how his attempt to take over the entire world while he was alive was his big Cthulthu-punching moment. He knew from the start he had a slim chance of success, but he did it anyway, because he had the heart of the King of Conquerers.
--->'''Rider:''' Look at this, boy (points to a map of the world), this is the opponent I’m fighting. Now draw a picture of us two, right next to this enemy. And do it to scale, that we may compare ourselves.
** There is a weapon in the Type-Moon universe that specifically operates by forcing the concept of death onto beings that have no such thing, thus effectively killing the unkillable by what amounts to ''hacking'' it into being killable.
* In the first two seasons of ''[[Anime/FutariWaPrettyCure Pretty Cure]]'' the Dark King, the very embodiment of ultimate annihilation, whose goal was to destroy everything and reduce the universe and all dimensions to a state of eternal void. Their names? [[RedOniBlueOni Nagisa Misumi and Honoka Yukishiro.]] And guess what? They defeated the Dark King in direct combat. ''Three'' times! The Dark King has probably made himself into the laughingstock of every EldritchAbomination everywhere...
* In the second-to-last chapter of ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist'': [[spoiler:Ed punches [[BigBad Father,]] who has recently absorbed Truth, in the face. Hard.]] Considering the being in question is generally able to

Then Evangeline appeared and demonstrated just how powerful she was by taking it out with one shot. The scary part is, based on Rakan's PowerLevel chart, the Demon God was, far, far, ''far'' stronger than anything Negi faced even after nearly 200 chapters.
** Perhaps subverted because, if all the stories about her

** Two words: Mazinger Zero.
* Kobayashi manages to defeat Kanna's father with a single attack in ''Manga/MissKobayashisDragonMaid'', an act that earns her the latter's respect.
* ''Manga/MyBalls'' takes the RefugeInAudacity route, as usual: did you just defeat [[spoiler:Beelzebub]] with [[ItMakesSenseInContext armpit sex?]]
* In ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' while the Tailed Beasts are far from "gods" and more obviously related to "great demons", each of them was separated into their own form by the Sage of the Six Paths, who bested and divided their original form as the Ten-Tailed Beast. Then, many generations later, all nine of the Tailed Beasts have been at some point defeated by ancient ninja legends and sealed inside the bodies of their descendants.
** Notably, most times when this trope is invoked in the present-day of the storyline, it usually fails. [[spoiler: Orochimaru vs 4-Tailed Naruto, Sasuke vs Killer Bee, and Pain vs 8-Tailed Naruto.]]
** [[spoiler: Chapters 689-690, Sakura punches Kaguya Ōtsutsuki right on her head with tremendous force.]]
* This is the signature move of Takashi Natsume from ''Manga/NatsumesBookOfFriends''. He can deliver a punch that lays out youkai many times larger than him, much to their surprise. It's implied that it's not just physical force -- he inherited very strong spirtual power from his [[IdenticalGrandson Identical Grandmother]] Reiko Natsume (who delivered most of her beatdowns via baseball bat.)
* Eneru from ''Manga/OnePiece'' claims to be a god, as he is made out of ''pure lightning'' and no one can touch him. In comes Luffy, who literally punches out Cthulhu because he is made of rubber, which doesn't conduct electricity.
** Screw that, Wiper beat Luffy to the punch on that one. A few things to note: Wiper is not made of rubber, he's just as vulnerable as any other human, and his main weapon is the Reject Dial, a weapon that sends attacks back at the enemy while causing [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique potentially lethal impacts to the user.]] Wiper enters into ''single combat'' with Eneru, and using the Reject Dial, [[KryptoniteFactor Seastone skates,]] quick thinking, and just plain badass [[{{Determinator}} determination,]] ''actually kills Eneru.'' Eneru's lightning restarts his heart, but Wiper actually ''killed'' him!
** Scratchman Apoo dealt what would have been a ''lethal blow'' to '''''[[LightEmUp Admiral Kizaru]]''''', if Kizaru weren't a [[NighInvulnerable Logia]] user, he would have been killed. Kizaru kicked him into a building afterwards, but Apoo still managed to get away.
** When Luffy met Whitebeard, the most powerful man alive that could move entire islands with his tsunamis and earthquakes, he automatically challenged his title as King of the Pirates. Almost everyone in earshot were stunned to hear Luffy do this.
** In a more literal example, shortly after the TimeSkip, Luffy one-shots a ''Kraken'', and later tames it.
** All the above examples are nowhere close to as epic as this one. While possessing no superhuman feats, the World Nobles are untouchable deities. Any offense made against them would immediately ring up the arrival of a Marine Admiral, whose power is One Piece's equivalent of Cthulhu, with the mission of completely terminating the offender. This grants these World Nobles the status of god and the freedom to do WHATEVER they like, including killing for no reason or torturing slaves to death. Well, guess what happened when [[spoiler: one of those bastards tried to murder one of Luffy's friends out of pure racism and entertainment.]] For the anime, enjoy watching the anime turned back into the manga for a few seconds.
** This is also the general reaction by those in the know about Luffy's defeat of Crocodile early in the series. A rookie pirate out of East Blue, widely regarded as the weakest ocean, taking down a Warlord of the Sea is huge. His bounty goes up over 300%, launching him to Supernova status after only having landed on four islands in the Grand Line.
* ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}'':
** Given that in ''Manga/PokemonAdventures'' it's rather common for bad guys to capture legendary Pokemon to use for nefarious purposes, the good guys have to punch the legendaries out to prevent them from doing major damage.
** Ash from ''Manga/TheElectricTaleOfPikachu'', in the first volume, basically kills a giant, high-level Haunter that the previous inhabitants of the area worshiped as a god. [[spoiler:He was actually trying to catch it, but the Haunter had a [[AGodAmI god complex]] from all the worship it received and blew itself up rather than staying caught.]]
** Red's Charizard Mega Evolves and literally does this to Mewtwo in ''Anime/PokemonOrigins''.
** To date, at least [[spoiler: six]] Legendaries have been defeated by Ash in [[Anime/{{Pokemon}} the anime]] -- Noland's Articuno, Brandon's Regice, Tobias's Darkrai and Latios, [[spoiler: Gladion's Silvally and Tapu Koko.]]
* In ''Anime/PrincessMononoke'', Lady Eboshi manages to pull this off with a musket. Unfortunately, killing said loving nature god only let out an infinitely more pissed-off ''destructive'' god. [[NiceJobBreakingItHero Nice job releasing Cthulhu, Eboshi.]]
-->'''Eboshi''': Now watch closely, everyone. I'm going to show you how to kill a god. A god of life and death. The trick is not to fear him.
* ''LightNovel/ProblemChildrenAreComingFromAnotherWorldArentThey'' has Izayoi do this on a regular basis. In the first episode alone, he kicked a water goddess (enormous water dragon) unconscious, with one kick. Kurosagi couldn't believe her eyes when she saw it.
* ''Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagicaTheMovieRebellion'' ends with Homura stealing [[spoiler:the aspect of Madoka,]] literal embodiment of hope, [[spoiler:that was once human]]. Then she traps it and several angels in a false universe. And nobody can do ''anything'' to stop her...[[SequelHook yet.]]
* At the end of ''Anime/RebuildOfEvangelion 2.0'', [[spoiler:Shinji and Unit 01 have started Near-Third Impact and are spoken of as things beyond any ever seen. Then Kaworu stops that by dropping a lance on Unit 01 from above. It's revealed in 3.0 however, that Kaworu wasn't able to stop Third Impact as a whole, thus killing off a good chunk of humanity.]]

* ''Manga/SaintSeiya'' enjoys and employs some very literal god-killing, being the plot is basically 'oh crap, a Holy War, go kill Hades for me (Athena)'. So they do, killing Hypnos and Thanatos along the way-and in the movies, they beat up Artemis and Apollo. Also seen in ''Manga/SaintSeiyaTheLostCanvas'', where at one point it's four gods against Capricorn El Cid. [[spoiler: with some help from TheHero and a good old HeroicSacrifice, he wins.]]
** To say nothing about Cancer Manigoldo, who pretty much spends the entirety of the fight against Thanatos hanging on for dear-life as he gets curbstomped further and further into the ground, only to claw back from the brink every time and eventually destroy the god's body.
** The grand champ of this all now is [[spoiler: Gemini Aspros,]] who managed to kill a ''Titan'' with powers comparable to Kronus single-handedly.

** Kyon nearly punches Haruhi (read: TheOmnipotent subconscious RealityWarper with [[ComedicSociopathy Anti-Social Personality Disorder]]) when her physical, psychological and sexual abuse of [[{{Moe}} Mikuru]] goes too far, specifically for [[spoiler:getting her drunk, then smacking her on the head repeatedly for not being able to act well ''because she's drunk''.]] Thankfully, Koizumi is able to physically restrain him, but Haruhi learns regret when she realizes that she finally managed to well and truly piss off Kyon.
** At the end of ''The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya'', Kyon domineers over [[spoiler:the Data Overmind, which has ''nearly'' godlike powers, by threatening to provoke Haruhi into recreating the universe into a place where the Overmind would not exist.]] Which is in some ways more impressive than just Punching Out Cthulhu. [[spoiler:After all how many mortals have ever made a god back down in fear?]]
* In ''Anime/CodeGeass R2'' episode 21, Lelouch uses his MagicalEye on [[spoiler:the "collective unconsciousness", a gigantic mass of souls without physical bodies, which his father Charles says has been referred to in the past as God]].
** Though the [[WordOfGod guide]] states that the people/collective unconsciousness already wanted a tomorrow implying that Charles' plan was doomed from the start. If you rewatch the scene, you can clearly see that Lelouch asks it in the form of a request, and even uses please.
* In the first two seasons of ''[[Anime/FutariWaPrettyCure Pretty Cure]]'' the Dark King, the very embodiment of ultimate annihilation, whose goal was to destroy everything and reduce the universe and all dimensions to a state of eternal void. The only ones standing in its way were a [[{{Determinator}} spunky,]] HotBlooded, [[{{Malaproper}} verbally-clumsy]] BigEater, and a quiet, bookish, [[BewareTheNiceOnes selfless]] TeenGenius. Their names? [[RedOniBlueOni Nagisa Misumi and Honoka Yukishiro.]] And guess what? They defeated the Dark King in direct combat. ''Three'' times! The Dark King has probably made himself into the laughingstock of every EldritchAbomination everywhere...
* In ''Anime/SCryed'', after [[spoiler:being thrown into The Other Side, Mujo]] comes back with a borderline better form, proclaiming that his lifelong hunger for power is finally satisfied. The heroes... are unimpressed.
* Guts from ''{{Manga/Berserk}}'' takes on [[TheLegionsOfHell an entire army of eldritch abominations]] armed only with a broken knife.
** And in the manga, Guts is attacked by Slan of the Godhand but manages to fight her off thanks to his EvolvingWeapon. It is averted somewhat, as the body Slan was in was only a construct made from what was available ([[FanDisservice e.g troll guts]]), and he didn't actually kill her.
** Later, Guts manages to wound Emperor Ganishka, an absurdly powerful being made of mist, in an act that not even an army of ''demons'' could accomplish, thanks to said EvolvingWeapon.
** And now, Guts has [[spoiler: killed the Sea God, essentially the Berserkerverse's equivalent of Cthulhu.]] Yep.
* ''Manga/GetterRobo'' punches out (or Getter Beams, or axes, or drills, or...) absurdly powerful baddies every Tuesday, and sometimes on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
** Goes up to 15 (because 11-14 get lapped pretty regularly at the higher Getter tiers) whenever ANYTHING involves the Getter Emperor, a multiversal Eldritch entity that's essentially the second-most-powerful mecha in fiction which is created from any Getter Robo assimilating enough mass and energy to consume a universe before fighting other Emperor-class Getters Rock-'em-sock-'em Robots style until the winner assimilates the losers to become the True Getter Emperor...and whenever it appears in the series (The Manga's Shin Getter Robo and Getter Robo Devolution, as well as New Getter Robo), protagonist Ryoma Nagare goes to deck it in the schnoz.
* In the Kyoto Arc of ''Manga/MahouSenseiNegima'', the BigBad was successful in summoning a massive demon god of 1600 years ago which wasn't even scratched by the best attacks of the main character. Then Evangeline appeared and demonstrated just how powerful she was by taking it out with one shot. The scary part is, based on Rakan's PowerLevel chart, the Demon God was, far, far, ''far'' stronger than anything Negi faced even after nearly 200 chapters.
** Perhaps subverted because, if all the stories about her are true, Evangeline ''herself'' is a Cthulhu. The demon had a fearsome reputation and great power but so did Evangeline.
** And then there was Nagi, who, when faced by a being known as the Mage of Beginnings and the Lifemaker that had just wiped out his entire party with one attack, proceeded to take said being out with what looked like a super-powered {{Shoryuken}}. [[spoiler: Possibly subverted as the Lifemaker wasn't destroyed - it possessed Zect and later Nagi himself.]]
** Then, chapter 265 has [[spoiler:Loli-chisame [[GetAHoldOfYourselfMan Bright Slapping]] OneWingedAngel Negi.]] [[http://www.mangafox.com/manga/mahou_sensei_negima/v29/c265/11.html It's as awesome]] [[http://www.mangafox.com/manga/mahou_sensei_negima/v29/c265/12.html as it sounds.]]

** Scratchman Apoo dealt a would have been a ''lethal blow'' to '''''[[LightEmUp Admiral Kizaru]]''''', if Kizaru weren't a [[NighInvulnerable Logia]] user, he would have been killed.

* The main plot of ''Edens Bowy'' revolves around god hunters, humans who have the power to slay gods, and thus protect humanity from divine enslavement.

* ''Anime/DragonBallZ'' has this as a recurring theme when the BigBad of each arc is defeated by Goku. It is actually invoked by the cast when [[FutureBadass Future Trunks]] is introduced and destroys Mecha Frieza, the BigBad of the previous arc, in mere seconds. Then he does the same to his dad, King Cold, a little while later.
** Truthfully, Trunks Worfed Freiza just to establish how strong he is so Trunks could then be used as a measuring stick to show just how absurdly strong the androids and Cell are. That's roughly where Toriyama threw the whole concept of power levels out the window and cranked the power creep to 11.
** The earliest example would be [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXx8cyBx1y4 King Piccolo killing Shenron]] (a being who grants wishes and is called the "Eternal Dragon").
Considering Buu was stronger than literal gods at that point.
** By the end of the series, the Saiyan cast could easily be said to be stronger than the universe's ''actual gods''.
[[spoiler:Goku and Frieza have to work together to finally take him down in the climax of the Tournament of Power.]]
** Not really on the Cthulhu level compared to the DBZ-universe's standards of what qualifies as godlike, but [[LovableCoward Yajirobe]] slicing off Great Ape Vegeta's tail with his sword while the latter is busy pummeling Goku and Gohan to a pulp, thereby immediately and permanently nuking Vegeta's ability to transform and forcing him to revert back to his usual form.
* ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}'':

** To date, at least [[spoiler: six]] Legendaries have been defeated by Ash in [[Anime/{{Pokemon}} the anime]] -- Noland's Articuno, Brandon's Regice, Tobias's Darkrai and Latios, [[spoiler: Gladion's Silvally and Tapu Koko. ]]
* In the final chapter of ''Manga/HeavensLostProperty'', [[spoiler:Tomoki smacks the crap out of Synapse Master Minos.]]
* In ''LightNovel/BlackBullet'' combined a bit with BrokeYourArmPunchingOutCthulhu, during [[spoiler: episode 4 when faced with an empty railgun and an attacking EldritchAbomination, Rentaro rips off his prosthetic arm, loads it into the railgun and this trope ensues...at a significant fraction of the speed of light.]]

* A fairly literal example in ''Manga/{{AKIRA}}'': after 2000+ pages of space satellites, foreign militaries, {{Tokyo Fireball}}s and everything else under the sun making attempts to kill power-mad mutant [[BewareTheSuperman Tetsuo]] [[TorturedMonster Shima,]] his childhood friend [[NeighborhoodFriendlyGangsters Kaneda]] finally catches up to him, chews him out for being a dick, and beats him up until he cries.
* In the ''Manga/AttackOnTitan'' manga, during chapter 50 [[spoiler:Eren literally punches the 'Smiling Titan' to defend Mikasa. Here, he accidentally discovers his Coordinate power.]]

** Goes up to 15 (because 11-14 get lapped pretty regularly at the higher Getter tiers) whenever ANYTHING involves the Getter Emperor; a Multiversal Eldritch entity that's essentially the second-most-powerful Mecha in Fiction which is created from any Getter Robo assimilating enough mass and energy to consume a universe before fighting other Emperor-class Getters Rock-'em-sock-'em Robots style until the winner assimilates the losers to become the True Getter Emperor...and whenever it appears in the series (The Manga's Shin Getter Robo and Getter Robo Devolution, as well as New Getter Robo), Protagonist Ryoma Nagare goes to Deck it in the Schnoz.
The scary part is, based on Rakan's PowerLevel chart, the Demon God was, far, far, ''far'' stronger than anything Negi faced even after nearly 200 chapters.

schnoz.
* In the Kyoto Arc of ''Manga/MahouSenseiNegima'', the BigBad was successful in summoning a massive Demon God demon god of 1600 years ago which wasn't even scratched by the best attacks of the main character. Then Evangeline appeared and demonstrated just how powerful she was by taking it out with one shot. The scary part is, based on Rakan's PowerLevel chart, the Demon God was, far, far, ''far'' stronger than anything Negi faced even after nearly 200 chapters.
** Perhaps subverted because, if all the stories about her are true, Evangeline herself ''herself'' is a Cthulhu. The demon had a fearsome reputation and great power but so did Evangeline.

** All the above examples are nowhere close as epic as this one. While possessing no superhuman feats, the World Nobles are untouchable deities. Any offense made against them would immediately ring up the arrival of a Marine Admiral, whose power is of One Piece's equivalent Cthulhu, with the mission of completely terminating the offender. This grants these World Nobles the status of God and the freedom to do WHATEVER they like, including killing for no reason or torturing slaves to death. Well, guess what happened when [[spoiler: one of those bastards tried to murder one of Luffy's friends out of pure racism and entertainment.]] For Anime, enjoy watching Anime turned back into Manga for a few seconds.

** It should be mentioned that they only beat the actually really Cthulhu-esque "Darkness of the Book of Darkness". When Nanoha and Fate fought against Reinforce they didn't stand the slightest chance. She's made to be a powerful being that can destroy entire worlds and she does ''not'' disappoint.
