* TheConsigliere: The combination of being a relatively junior officer and absolute fearlessness when speaking with Vader earns his respect. He's by no means any more intelligent or competent than Vader, but he is loyal, respectful, and honest, and as long as everything he says to Vader comes from that, Vader will listen.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: One explanation for why he (and other Imperial officers for that matter) could be so blunt with Darth Vader and get away with it was because at the time of the original film's release Vader's status as a man who'd kill subordinates at the slightest provocation had yet to be established, though considering he was this close to taking back the Death Star plans from the Rebels after Scarif, it's very likely he gave Jir a pass because of his advice of holding Leia hostage.
* HonestAdvisor: Jir appears to have this relationship with Darth Vader, warning the latter that his decision to hold Princess Leia would only increase support for the Rebellion in the Senate, which prompts Vader to order him to destroy Leia's ship and cover up the incident by faking a distress signal and sending a message to the Imperial Senate claiming that all aboard were killed. Vader, for his part, seems to appreciate the Jir's input, going from angrily shouting at Leia to calmly addressing his subordinate's concerns.
** It should also be noted that Jir was both straightforward and respectful when addressing Vader, which likely played a part in Vader's treatment of him. People who got strangled were usually being disrespectful, insubordinate, or had just massively screwed up.
** Further Legends works stated that Daine Jir had always been utterly unafraid of Darth Vader and had no problems speaking his mind to the Dark Lord. The first time he did so was unprecedented and his fellow officers began to suspect that Jir's time with the living was short. Vader, however found Jir's blunt and honest manner to be a refreshing change from the scheming Imperial officers Vader usually had to deal with so Vader promoted Jir and assigned Jir to be his aide.
* MookLieutenant: He may be just a lieutenant, but he apparently has enough respect from Darth Vader to criticize the Sith Lord's actions without fear of retaliation. As a matter of fact, he's the only Imperial officer in the films who criticizes Vader's actions without fear or suffering for it.

promoted to the rank of commander after he impressed Vader with his blunt honesty.
* TheConsigliere: In his very first scene he brings up potential issues that might result from Vader's actions to the man himself, which Vader calmly listens to and addresses. Material from the ExpandedUniverse says his loyalty, honesty, competence, and absolute fearlessness when speaking with Vader earned
Jir the Sith Lord's respect, a promotion to the rank of commander, and assigned Jir to be his an assignment as Vader's aide.

Another explanation - discounting material from the ExpandedUniverse - is that Jir was doing exactly what any competent subordinate should be doing; bringing up reasonable concerns they might face in the future and never crossing the line into insubordination. Contrast this with Motti, who mouthed off at Vader and got choked for it.

* TokenCompetentMinion: A downplayed example. Daine Jir is one of the few Imperial officers under Darth Vader's command that is respected by the Sith Lord. Jir serves as an HonestAdvisor to Vader and is allowed to speak his mind about Vader's actions. Jir is also the only one to point out to Vader that holding Leia Organa could end up generating sympathy for the Rebellion and his prediction that Leia would not betray the Rebellion under torture proves true. The Empire might have won the war if they had more people like Jir on their side.
