* MultiArmedAndDangerous: The Third Kazekage puppet has a HiddenWeapon that gives it several dozen extra arms.

* CosmopolitanCouncil: They could stand some improvement gender-wise, but when your group contains a SharkMan and a walking venus fly trap you qualify.

* GreaterScopeVillain: In Part I, they mostly wait in the shadows as Orochimaru rampages in the Leaf, but their presence and the danger they pose become evident when Itachi and Kisame first appear.

* VillainDecay: For various reasons (not having access to some of their powers, the heroes knowing their techniques and weaknesses in advance, the opponents they fight being more powerful or numerous, and so on) none of the reanimated akatsuki possess nearly as much of a threat as when they were alive.

* HateSink: Hidan is a cruel psychopath and member of a ReligionOfEvil, who worships violence and death and sees mercy as a sin. He slaughtered his village simply because he was disgusted with their pacifistic way of life, and performed gruesome rituals to attain immortality for himself. And unlike the rest of the Akatsuki, he has no real FreudianExcuse for his actions. On top of that, even the series itself seems to posit him as the most unsympathetic major villain, as he's exempt from the CycleOfRevenge {{Aesop}} pervading the storyline with his FateWorseThanDeath.

* MoralityPet: The one person keeping Pain from going completely off the rails.

* TheseHandsHaveKilled: In the anime, after his group gets into a scuffle with some Stone Ninja (actually Root members in disguise), he ends up killing one of them in self-defense. However, this causes him to freeze up and leave him defenseless, indirectly causing Nagato to unleash the Gedo Statue to save him.

* BodyHorror: As if 95% of his body being a CreepyDoll weren't enough, the 5% that's left is an unnamed part of his original human body that is as purple as his poison.

* BodyHorror: His body is sewn together like a rag doll thanks to his strings, complete with four masks stitched into the flesh of his back. When he uses those masks to summon a quartet of HumanoidAbominations, he visibly goes into violent convulsions before his back ''tears apart'' to release them. Oh, and he has two OneWingedAngel modes by recombining with those beasts, one of which makes him look more like a murderous kraken than a human.

* KickTheDog: He luring Naruto into fighting him by confirming Gaara's first death and then sitting on Gaara's corpse in front of Naruto.

* GreaterScopeVillain: A position he shares with Kaguya. Specifically, he created the state of perpetual war that the setting takes place in by turning Hagoromo's sons against each other and started the conflict between their reincarnations, including Hashirama and Madara, and Naruto, and Sasuke. Every conflict and casualty from the warring clans era to the modern village wars and Akatsuki can be traced back to his constant manipulation of the world. Naruto argues that shinobi history belongs to those who lived and died for it, but can't deny that Black Zetsu was a heavy influence (and thus he makes certain Black Zetsu will never influence it again).

* MoreDespicableMinion: Kaguya is more of a force of nature and even then, Hagomoro believes that she was once a good person who lost sight of her goals. Black Zetsu, on the other hand, is a smug and despicable parasite who manipulated countless lives for his selfish goals.

* NumberTwo: He is for Tobi in the Akatsuki.

* {{Bishonen}}: Appearing as a 15-year-old boy helps.

As if to prove this stance further after the heroes succeed in sealing Kaguya away Naruto makes sure to hunt Black Zetsu down and seal him in the new moon as well in order to prevent him from resurrecting Kaguya at a later point and to end her threat once and for all]].

* EffectiveKnockoff: Black Zetsu's method of [[spoiler:reviving Kaguya Ōtsutsuki resembles an overly convoluted variant of the Ōtsutsuki Clan's usual method of revival, the Kāma. By becoming the jinchūriki of the Ten-Tailed Beast (Kaguya merged with the Divine Tree), Madara's body was effectively transformed into that of an Ōtsutsuki Clan member's. Following this, Black Zetsu was able to convert Madara's body into a replica of Kaguya's, similarly to how a Kāma converts its recipient's body into a replica of the Ōtsutsuki Clan member who bestowed it. Then he watched over both brothers' reincarnations in hopes of finding someone that would be able to awaken the Rinnegan: Madara. Putting Madara's corpse in Kabuto's hands ultimately results in the very scenario Tobi wanted to avoid, and it only gets worse from there.]]

As such, Kaguya relies on his advice when her battles go south. However, he still gets outwitted by Naruto several times because he mostly watches from the sidelines rather than actively experiencing the heat of battle.]]

Finally, he underestimated the whole of Team 7 thinking that Kaguya can cope with them herself. He was wrong.]]
* VillainBall: After activating the Infinite Tsukuyomi, he [[spoiler:backstabs Madara and uses him as fodder for Kaguya's resurrection, but also demonstrated knowledge of the seals that they had, which could be used to seal her. Instead of waiting for the more tactically apt Madara to triumph over Sasuke and Naruto, he immediately backstabs him and replaces him with the stronger but less battle-savvy Kaguya, resulting in her defeat when they manage to seal her. She's the most normal of the Akatsuki, not having any particular appearance quirks, fixations, or sociopathic tendencies, and is driven out of a genuine belief that they'll make the world better, and out of the memory for her lost friend. She's almost more of TheHeart on the bad guys' side.

* BladeOnARope: Hidan's triple-bladed scythe is attached to a long metal cable, wound around two spools on his hip. This allows him to use it is as both a short and long-ranged weapon.

Itachi has his blood red sharingan, Kisame is a shark, Sasori has turned most of his body into an inorganic puppet, Deidara has two mouths with tongues on his hands, one on his chest and had to have both of his arms crudely sewn back on, Kakuzu has those same crude seams all over his body, includind a seam that connects his lower and upper jaw together and also has 5 hearts. Hidan has his head crudely sewn back on and his entire body turns pitch black when perfoming the Jashin Ritual. Pain has the chakra rods lining his entire face while Konan's paper jutsu gives her skin the illusion of flaying away.

* VillainousFriendship: Compared to most of Akatsuki's other teams, which involve hostile relationships between partners, Kisame and Itachi get along quite well. While they were hostile when they first met, Kisame displays genuine concern for Itachi. In fact, other than the aforementioned meeting, they are never shown to argue at all, and that argument was quite civilized and only turned nasty when Kisame drew Samahada. Kisame's last words are even directed at Itachi! Their friendship is actually quite sweet. It is later revealed that both share a common burden of killing comrades for the common good. Both of them were men lost in their own contradiction and unable to know their true identities. In the anime, Kisame is well aware of Itachi's true nature and bids him a fond farewell when Itachi goes to die against Sasuke.

He had no interest in the Akatsuki and was instead forced into the organization after Itachi bested him in combat. Even when doing the Akatsuki's job of capturing Tailed Beasts, Deidara gets most of his enjoyment out of using his clay to bombard places and wreck havok.

* EtTuBrute: Taki handed him an ImpossibleTask (assassinating the First Hokage, A.K.A. [[WorldsStrongestMan Hashirama "God of Shinobi" Senju]]) then punished him harshly when he failed, despite the fact that he survived such a monstrously difficult SuicideMission. Kakuzu more or less responsed by flipping his lid, slaughtering their council, and going rogue.

* TheMedic: Though he has no demonstration in medical justu, Kakuzu is the one who reattached Deidara's arms and Hidan's head.

* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: He takes it to an extreme, even knowing that he could probably get his limbs replaced by Kakuzu or use it as part of his [[BatmanGambit plan]]. Gaara rips his arm off and he merely grins, Kakashi sends the other arm to an alternative dimension and he barely even acknowledges it.

* PetTheDog: Deidara respected Gaara enough to allow him to move the enormous sand he used to protect his village into the desert before kidnapping him, even going so far as to admiringly call him noble. Also, right before pulling his TakingYouWithMe against Sasuke, he mentally apologizes to Tobi.

* TheLoad: Played for laughs. Hidan isn't exactly a liability to Kakuzu as a fighting partner but is noted to be a huge hindrance to his bounty hunting occupation.

* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Compared to most of Akatsuki's other teams, which are able to get along with one another or at least tolerate each other, Hidan and Kakuzu hate each other. In fact, the only reason why they work together is that Hidan's borderline immortality means that Kakuzu can't kill him when annoyed, while Hidan can't betray Kakuzu because he needs someone to stitch him back up if he gets put through the meat grinder, and also because Kakuzu would stomp him in a straight fight.

* UnfriendlyFire: The anime filler reveals that he killed off many of his partners this way, firing his attacks while his partner is preoccupied with the enemy, allowing Kakuzu to take both of them out. This is no longer a problem with Hidan and is, in fact, one of their best team strategies as Kakuzu doesn't have to worry about killing Hidan while he distracts their target.

* TheWorfEffect: When he's brought back and reanimated in the Great Ninja War, two of his hearts are rather easily destroyed by the fan Tenten is wielding (admittedly said fan is a powerful weapon created by the Sage of Six Paths).

Had he not needed to take into account the other Shinobi's presence on the battlefield, Naruto may not have been able to land the Rasenshuriken attack necessary to put him down, either. Bear in mind the entire battle happens shortly after Kakuzu had spent three days and nights straight performing a jutsu to transfer a tailed beast into the Edo statue, too.

It is a highly complex technique to follow: first, Hidan must ingest the blood of an opponent, from which he must then undergo that skeleton man transformation and then draw a large Jashin marking (an upside-down triangle within a circle) on the ground. So long as he's within the circle, the jutsu is active, whereas if he moves out of it the jutsu is canceled out; which means he's now stationary. That doesn't sound so bad, right? Well, then there's the real clincher: it can only be used on one opponent at a time. That's right, after all that setup, Hidan can only inflict damage on one target, all the while remaining vulnerable to said target's teammates, who can more or less work to force him out of the circle. Overall, the jutsu seems to only work for sadomasochists (which Hidan happens to be); otherwise, there are far more efficient and effective techniques in the Naruto universe. It wouldn't be so bad if Hidan just slit his throat or has Kakuzu take care of the other enemies the moment the ritual is complete but being part of his religious process and his inherent sadism makes him take his time.
* AxCrazy: The most openly deranged and bloodthirsty member of the group. In fact, Hidan is probably the most legitimately insane character in the series, [[OmnicidalManiac having no motives or goals other than to kill people.]]
* BackFromTheDead: Played with in one filler arc. His 'real' self is still buried at the Nara shrine, but Kabuto manages to recreate an entire Edo Hidan from some of his cells. The fact that even the neo-Hidan's personality matches the original is played for laughs.

Being a Shinobi, he must know how to use basic ninjutsu but never does so onscreen (despite databooks confirming he has a whopping 5/5 in Ninjutsu.) Like other unseen aspects of his characterization, this is likely because of Kishimoto rushing to end their arc.
* BladeOnARope: Hidan's triple-bladed scythe is attached to a long metal cable, wound around two spools on his hip. This allows him to use it is as both a short and long-ranged weapon.

* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Hidan is noticeably more level-headed when he debuts fighting Yugito compared to the AxCrazy PsychopathicManchild he is portrayed as later. Going by the anime, it's noticeable in his gesticulations from when Zetsu shows up to collect Yugito that Hidan begins acting like how most remember him. Likely due to Kishimoto’s editors rushing him to finish their arc, he ended up "dumbing" down both Hidan and Kakuzu's competence in order to allow the protagonists' convoluted tactics to succeed.
* TheChewToy: Official Title in Akatsuki. Kakuzu when enraged would kill his partners. Solution: Give him an immortal one. It's a strange amalgamation of stress reliever/punishment apparently. Considering Hidan is the newest member of Akatsuki outside of Tobi and Deidara's backstory shows Akatsuki intentionally recruits specific ninja to their ranks, willing or not, Hidan might very well have been headhunted specifically to give Kakuzu a partner he couldn't kill off no matter how hard he tries.
* CombatPragmatist: Because he's immortal, Hidan doesn't have to worry about FriendlyFire from Kakuzu. The two of them exploit this by having Kakuzu attack with large-scale jutsu while Hidan pins the enemy down.

* ComplexityAddiction: It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see how needlessly convoluted and overly complex his typical battle plan is. He first has to wound someone, then ingest their blood, then create a sigil, then stand in it, and ''then'' wound himself or trick them into directly attacking him, and when he chooses the former, he ''never'' goes without talking shit and loudly boasting before slowly impaling himself, when he could just as easily slit his wrists, throat, or femoral arteries. While he is apparently an extremely skilled ninjutsu user, Kishimoto never portrays this. It is possible that he was far more pragmatic before Kakuzu came along with his infinite ability to bail him out of his bad choices, but either way, Hidan's entire battle plan relies on opponents not knowing what he's about and being more careful than they should be and/or Kakuzu stepping in whenever he gets his ass kicked, and the entire process could easily be thwarted by someone shooting first and asking questions later while someone else distracts Kakuzu.
* ConfusionFu: He swings around his scythe on a long cord, making it fly around unpredictably, and thus making it tougher to block.
* CripplingOverspecialization: He only has one real power, which requires him to ingest someone's blood after cutting them, then create a ritual circle, stand in it, and become a living voodoo doll for that person. He uses it to kill Asuma. Once this technique is analyzed, there are a few weaknesses. If Hidan is removed from the circle, the effect ends. Furthermore, while immortal, he can be chopped up to remove the threat he poses as he is no more durable than a regular human and never uses defensive jutsus. Finally, he has to attack someone with melee in order for the technique to work.

Hidan was the only success at the time of the data book that explained this.
* ReligiousBruiser: He's very religious (even if it's a ReligionOfEvil) and is one of the more deadly members of Akatsuki.

* StoryBreakerPower: Extremely downplayed compared to most cases but Hidan's ritual jutsu, [[AwesomeButImpractical impractical and difficult to set up as it is]], is actually very useful for dealing with Jinchuriki from a strategic perspective. The Tailed Beasts are quite difficult to put down conventionally and can give even the strongest of the Akatsuki a fight. But if Hidan gets one drop of blood, he can bypass all of their natural defenses and put them down much quicker, as he did for the Two-Tails. This is arguably one of the main factors that made Hidan and Kakuzu such an effective team, as Kakuzu can hold the target's attention long enough for Hidan to set up his ritual jutsu and finish them off. This can even be played in the opposite manner; Hidan's immortality means that Kakuzu has no qualms blasting both him and their opponent to smithereens while Hidan keeps the opponent distracted.
* StupidEvil: His character in a nutshell. He's quite transparent about not having any other goals beyond mass murder and making people die in agony.

In fact, the only reason why they work together is that Hidan's borderline immortality means that Kakuzu can't kill him when annoyed, while Hidan can't betray Kakuzu because he needs someone to stitch him back up if he gets put through the meat grinder, and also because Kakuzu would stomp him in a straight fight.
* TokenEvilTeammate: Even in a group of terrorists and criminals with their own bloody ledgers, Hidan stands out as the only one who is truly evil to the core, having no FreudianExcuse to justify his crimes nor any PetTheDog moments that flesh out his humanity.

* VitriolicBestBuds: He insults and playfully provokes Kakuzu every chance he gets, but he panics when he is forced to attack him and calls out to him multiple times when it appears he was caught off guard. After Infinite Tsukuyomi is activated, he leaves Yamato to be taken by the genjutsu - which later proves to be his undoing, as after both Kaguya and the genjutsu are foiled, Tobi is left with neither a host nor the Gedo Statue to sustain him, and he quickly crumbles into nothing.

* AdaptiveArmor: Functioned as such for Obito during his early days as Madara II.
* AllThereInTheManual: The 4th Databook revealed his real name is Tobi, while ''Guruguru'' was just Obito's nickname for him. It's possible Obito named his own persona after him.
* BadassLongcoat: When he appears during the 4th World War, he's clad in the same type Obito wore prior to it being shredded.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Tobi makes his return after Madara's revival by taking on the entire Alliance with a scaled-down version of Hashirama's titanic statue, while still talking about poo!
* BioArmor: Acted as a living suit of armor for Obito in his early days as Madara II. During the 4th World War he had Yamato inside him as "filler", but he was [[PuppeteerParasite in complete control]].
* TheBlank: Tobi has a hollow head with one hollow eye socket, yet it still manages to see through the link it shares with the other Zetsu.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: He is talkative and obsessed with bowel movements, and his zany personality inspired Obito's Tobi persona.
* DiabolusExMachina: The sole function of his return was to block the Alliance from fighting against Madara. Even after Karin seems to destroy his colossus and Orochimaru temporarily weakens him by giving Yamato a curse mark, he is shown to be still blocking the Alliance several chapters later. His only other appearance was in a flashback set almost two decades before, and the manga doesn't show what he was up to and why he showed up at that exact moment.
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: As the Infinite Tsukuyomi is dispelled, he spontaneously crumbles into dust. Only Yamato even knows what happened to him.
* ElementalPowers: Through a Wood Statue, he uses a technique that creates 5 streams, each containing one of the 5 basic elements.
* GreenThumb: Can merge with the earth and even burrow underground, masking his chakra altogether and allowing him to tunnel around undetected at extreme speeds, and can function as a living suit of armor for a person. Having a high concentration of Hashirama cells also gives him access to Wood Release if he has a host that can use it.
* MesACrowd: Tobi is one of 100,000 White Zetsu, although he is unique in his ability to symbiotically bond to a person and augments his power with their own.
* NoBodyLeftBehind: When the Infinite Tsukuyomi is canceled and the Ten-Tails sealed away in another dimension, Tobi attempts to rebond to Yamato, but crumbles into dust before he can do so.
* PsychopathicManchild: Tobi compares the sensation of killing someone to the relief of releasing your bowels; considering his obsession with it [[CerebusRetcon all his previous quirks now feel downright unnerving]].
* NoNameGiven: His name was only revealed in the 4th Databook, with the manga only giving him the nickname Guruguru[=/=]Spiral[=/=]Swirly.
* ReplacementGoldfish: Seems to have taken over Obito's role as Madara's [[CoDragons second-in-command]] alongside Black Zetsu, even wearing the same sort of cloak as Obito.
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: Tobi has an expansive knowledge of many rare jutsu including Nature changes and Wood Release, but requires a host body capable of the techniques to actually ''use'' them. Once he assimilates Yamato, he gains full access to ''all'' of them and becomes a match for almost all of the Alliance, including four of the Kages.
* SharingABody: With Obito, during the beginning of his career as Madara.
* SpeakInUnison: Does this with the other White Zetsu on occasion.
* SpikeShooter: His Wood Release: Cutting Technique projects and fires sharpened branches and roots that, if they impale a person, grow into and through their body.
* SuperToughness: Tobi's body is a ''lot'' harder than the rest of the goopy, shapeshifting Zetsu. He takes a hit from Karin's Chakra Chains and Suigetsu's FingerFirearms with minimal damage and even manages to skewer Karin with his Wood Release: Cutting Technique in retaliation.
* ToiletHumor: He is the living incarnate of it. Heck, his skin pattern is swirl-shaped, basically a VisualPun for a {{Swirlie}}... or the spiraling vortex of a flushing toilet!
* VoiceOfTheLegion: His voice has a reverberating effect.
* WasOnceAMan: It's revealed that he was once a human who was absorbed by the Ten-Tails. Canceling the jutsu which created that altered form caused his body to dissolve immediately.
