* DecapitationRequired: Subverted. Asuma thinks it'll work and cuts it off, but all it does is keep Hidan from controlling his body and Kakuzu can re-attach it.

* BunnyEarsLawyer: Serves this role in both Original Flavor and Zombified Akatsuki. He doesn't care about his leaders' cause, nor does he have one of his own besides spreading his "art," and is one of the less serious members overall. Despite this, he is a very formidable individual.

* AdaptedOut: He and Kakuzu are absent in the musical theater adaptation "Song of the Akatsuki," though both are mentioned in passing.

* PunnyName: One of her techniques, ''kami no shisha no jutsu'' is a pun off of her "Angel" epithet. Phonetically, it could be read as the "messenger of God technique," but the kanji instead reads "paper-person of God technique."

* TogetherInDeath: That she is at peace and with Jiraiya, Yahiko and Nagato in the afterlife is symbolized by one of her paper pieces, dyed red with her blood, being blown back to the house she and the others lived in with Jiraiya as children. The paper takes its place with the other marks left there that signified who was "home."

Zetsu is a strange plant-like being created from the First Hokage's DNA (or so we were led to believe) that serves as Akatsuki's spy, lookout, and [[IAmAHumanitarian corpse disposal]]. He possesses LiteralSplitPersonalities that talk to each other and was the only Akatsuki member who is never shown with a partner because he can be his own partner. He can perfectly blend into the background (sometimes by use of a Venus flytrap thing).

Zetsu knows Tobi's identity and status as the true leader of Akatsuki, and thus works closely with him. He showed the ability to split his two sides apart and had his white side lead Sasuke to the Kage summit. The white Zetsu interrupted the meeting and revealed that Sasuke was in the building, after which the Raikage strangled him until he lost consciousness.

White Zetsu managed to escape the summit and healed the wounds Sasuke had received in his battles with Danzo, Kakashi, and Naruto. Both halves appeared to be looking for Kisame's dead body, only to reveal that the body was just a White Zetsu clone, which was created so Kisame could infiltrate Kumogakure. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Zetsu is the main source of Tobi's army. Ultimately original White Zetsu was killed by Sasuke Uchiha in order to test out his Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan.

* HiveMind: The White Zetsu Clones all share one mind that they link through a system of underground roots; once linked they instantly share information with each other. Although the original has his own, singular mind.
* HumanoidAbomination: A [[ImAHumanitarian cannibalistic]] ManEatingPlant who [[GreenThumb can move seamlessly within the earth, grass and trees]] and has [[SplitPersonality black and white halves which differ in personality]] and which can split from each other physically, with the white half [[MesACrowd capable of making clones of himself]] in a process akin to a fungal parasite. It's revealed that he and his brethren were [[spoiler:once humans who were assimilated by Kaguya]].

* AncientConspiracy: Ever since the time of the Sage and his sons, this guy has been meddling with events behind the scenes to ensure Kaguya's revival.

* EffectiveKnockoff: Black Zetsu's method of reviving Kaguya Ōtsutsuki resembles an overly convoluted variant of the Ōtsutsuki Clan's usual method of revival, the Kāma. By becoming the jinchūriki of the Ten-Tailed Beast (Kaguya merged with the Divine Tree), Madara's body was effectively transformed into that of an Ōtsutsuki Clan member's. Following this, Black Zetsu was able to convert Madara's body into a replica of Kaguya's, similarly to how a Kāma converts its recipient's body into a replica of the Ōtsutsuki Clan member who bestowed it. Unlike the Kāma, however, Black Zetsu cannot completely erase the host's personality.

* SatanicArchetype: Black Zetsu is a pitch-black shadow that was born from the local a GodOfEvil with a view to reviving her in the future. In order to do this, he [[TheCorrupter convinced]] Haguromo's son Indra [[CainAndAbel to turn against his own family after his brother Ashura was declared the successor]] and was already a large influence on him beforehand. Subsequently, this led to many other conflicts and suffering for others throughout ninja history. He continued to do the same to Indra's descendants, the Uchiha clan in order to bring TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt and to revive a GodOfEvil.

* TheSymbiote: Spends most of the series attached to White Zetsu, and later to Obito.

* VillainousBreakdown: When Naruto comes back to make sure he can't cause any more trouble in his weakened state, Black Zetsu tries to put on a bravado that Naruto is just another part of history he created. Naruto responds that he neither owns nor created ninja history and that someone who has to cling to his mother (Kaguya) isn't much of a ninja in the first place, before punching him into the sealing moon.
