* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Horus does not make his death easy, or painless. He first smashes Sanguinius into the deck so hard that it crushes one of his wings and breaks a bunch of bones. Then he hits him with his mace and sends him flying, ripping open the previous injury Angron had caused and inflicting a second, even worse wound. When Sanguinius still manages to feebly fight back, Horus throws him down and beats him so brutally that his bones are pulverized, his organs are smashed to pulp, and half the skin on his face is torn off. By the time Horus fatally crushes his neck and spine, Sanguinius is already drowning in his own blood and can't even muster any final words.

* DentedIron: The Siege of Terra leaves Sanguinius in this state by the time he boards the ''Vengeful Spirit''. He's physically exhausted from fighting without real rest or relief for months, mentally worn out thanks to his intense psychic visions, and has sustained multiple serious injuries in his back-to-back fights with Ka'bandha and Angron, including a wound from the latter that is implied to be fatal. And in spite of all that, he still comes within an inch of killing Horus. One can only imagine how the fight would have gone if he'd been at 100%.

** To Horus. Horus and Sanguinius are the two most well-liked and charismatic primarchs. Both are renowned for their heroism, even among their brothers. Both get visions of a dark future. Both have certain insecurities (Horus about his fitness to be warmaster, Sanguinius about the mutation that caused his wings). The difference is that Sanguinius is aware of his insecurities and decides to face his fears and doubts head-on, regardless. Horus on the other hand allows a vision and his flaws to drag him into hell and become a puppet of the Chaos Gods.
** To Angron. He is Angron in reverse. Angron was an empathethic soul who was turned into a bloodthirsty monster due to the Butcher's nails. He took a noble legion and turned them into monsters. He is probably the most unpopular primarch. Sanguinius is a naturally bloodthirsty monster who strives to be noble. He took a legion of derelicts and turned them into some of the most noble heroes of the Imperium. As a result, he was among the most popular primarchs in life and the most beloved in death.

* {{Berserker}}: Give off this impression when in By nature they are the most bloodthirsty of all the legions. They especially love close-range combat. They're noted as one of the most savage close-quarters combatants out there. This gets taken up to eleven for the members who give in to the Red Thirst or even worse the Black Rage.

The Blood Angels are designed to be more aggressive than the World Eaters and enjoy every moment crueler than the Night Lords. * GameplayAndStoryIntegration: The Dark Angels were the prototype for the Space Marine Legions and pioneered all aspects of warfare used by the Astartes, but while they developed these tactics it's noted that certain other Legions master their own specific field to a greater degree. On the tabletop, their Legion rule allows them to dedicate each of their units to one of the Wings of the Hexagrammaton and gain an appropriate benefit, but these benefits are often weaker in some way than those of comparable Legions. For instance, the Stormwing bonus grants +1 to hit with bolters, bolt pistols and combi-bolters, but the Imperial Fists Legion rule grants +1 to hit with ''all'' bolt and auto weapons.

* FatalFlaw: His aloofness and inability to relate to other people. The Lion allows the Imperium to treat Caliban as they would any other world brought into compliance where practically every other Primarch bar Angron (in his case through lack of choice in the matter) had their homeworld's culture preserved, without giving Caliban's people a say in the matter, then banishes Luther and a large fraction of his Legion to their homeworld without explanation. This predictably results in bitterness from many parties stewing over into outright rebellion and directly leads to the Fallen declaring Caliban's independence, with Lion seemingly none the wiser to how Luther and those under his command felt about his actions until the moment they fired upon him.

* TheSocialExpert: Prior to the Imperium's arrival, he was the politician to the Lion's visionary, making deals and negotiating on behalf of the Order.

to:

* TheSocialExpert: Prior to the Imperium's arrival, he was the politician to the Lion's visionary, making deals and negotiating on behalf of the Order. After his exile, he still has it: he's able to turn a visiting group of Dark Angels to his cause with a little help from Zahariel by presenting the facts of their situation in just the right way to make them believe that the Emperor has chosen to abandon them and the Lion would rather help Guilliman build a new empire than see to his homeworld's protection amid the turmoil of the Heresy.

* AllForNothing: His efforts to reach Terra in time to aid the Loyalists ultimately prove for naught - besides it being a ForegoneConclusion that Sanguinus and the Emperor would board the ''Vengeful Spirit'' and be killed/mortally wounded by Horus, , ''Echoes of Eternity'' reveals that the Traitors managed to breach the inner palace a week before he would've arrived, meaning there's a good chance that even if the Loyalists had dug in, Horus would have won by the time the Ultramarines, Dark Angels, and Space Wolves arrived. Making it worse is that, as revealed in ''The End and the Death'',Guiliman's forces were just ''hours'' away from Terra when Emperor boarded the ''Vengeful Spirit'', and might've arrived in time if the Astronomican was still online.

* InformedAbility: Many times in early Horus Heresy books we are told that Ferrus was a great military mind. Horus himself says in ''Vengeful Spirit'' that Ferrus is the one primarch who understands, eats and breathes war like he does. We end up seeing nothing of this and his most well-known battle is, off course, his reckless assault at Istvan V, which partially lead to the Dropsite Massacre. Many of the tactician and strategist aspects he was known for ended up going to Lion El'Jonson in later stories. He apparently was enough of a strategist to be placed in command of one of the three main thrusts of the Great Crusade (Horus and the Emperor commanded the other two) but that may have simply been a result of him being the fourth Primarch to be found again, behind Horus, Leman Russ, and [[UnPerson the Second Primarch]].

* TheFettered: The dark side of the Blood Angels' culture is that every aspect is designed to fight the Red Thirst, with their artistic pursuits being a method to channel their passions elsewhere. The Third and First Spheres of their hierarchy are outright described as surrendering their free will through constant direction and oversight, with warriors of the First Sphere even sacrificing their very identities to completely serve Sanguinius. Any disobedience is punished harshly simply to ensure that the Legion remains tightly focused and resilient to the Thirst.

Another key aspect of the Iron Hands was their tendency towards a SocialDarwinism. An ardent perfectionist, Ferrus Manus wanted himself and his marines to be constantly improving themselves. As such, he had the various companies of the legion constantly competing for his approval. Those companies that earned his approval were given the best equipment first. However, such approval had to be constantly earned. This created an air of fierce competition, and a lack of a unifying esprit de corps. To outsiders, it often seemed that the only thing keeping the legion together was Ferrus Manus himself.\\\

This is supplementary material that is mentioned in various Horus Heresy novels and campaign books. It also explains why the legion fragmented so much after the death of their Primarch.

In many ways, the Iron Hands are like their frozen-over, yet volcanic, homeworld of Medusa - seemingly cold, yet with fire boiling underneath. The Iron Hands are known for liberally using cybernetics, voluntarily replacing their limbs and organs with artificial replacements because they believe that "flesh is weak". This results in the Tenth Legion having close ties to the Mechanicum and having access to exclusive bits of technology. Ironically, Ferrus Manus privately disapproved of his sons putting bionics on themselves in such a gratuitous manner. Despite acting calm, the Iron Hands are known for frequent outbursts of anger. In battle, the Iron Hands form an inexorable, unstoppable force of tougher-than-average Astartes. Believing in pure strength, the Iron Hand use straightforward tactics combined with numbers and firepower to destroy the enemy. The Iron Hands wear black armor.

An anecdote in the Forge World books mentions a time when a valiant human enemy sent three ships of gifts to him under a flag of truce, only for the ships to explode and kill many Blood Angels. Sanguinius was so incensed that he promptly declared the enemy unworthy of integration into the Imperium and personally led the Angel's Tears in reducing their planet to a charnel house, with the few enemy survivors taken to serve the Legion.
