* AdaptationalWimp: In terms of battle prowess alone, the adaptation makes a bigger point of Tyrion being MinoredInAsskicking. In the way to the Vale, for instance, Tyrion kills several dozens of Tribesmen using ambushing tactics and AnAxeToGrind, while in the show he barely manages to kill one of them with a shield. Of course, by the Battle Of Blackwater Bay Show Tyrion TookALevelInBadass, but he's still lagging behind Book Tyrion in the same battle.

* MinoredInAsskicking: His best and preferred weapons are his mind and his tongue but he has killed someone with just a shield. Tyrion's definitely taken some night classes since becoming Hand of the King, to the point where he leads the defense of King's Landing in the Battle of Blackwater. Bronn witnessed his killing with a shield, figured he'd make good use of a [[AnAxeToGrind war axe]], and offers one to him in recommendation. He does in the battle.

* AnAxeToGrind: He prefers to fight with an axe, probably because his stature would make using a sword extremely awkward.

* AlmightyJanitor: A ''literal'' version, Tyrion tells Varys that at the age of sixteen, Tywin Lannister [[ReassignedToAntarctica assigned]] his son the job of running the sewers and cisterns of Casterly Rock, Tyrion revolutionized it and made it perfect to [[ReassignmentBackfire spite his father]].

* ArchEnemy: To his sister, [[CainAndAbel Cersei]], and to his father, [[ArchnemesisDad Tywin]].

* CustomUniform: He is one of two Lannisters whose battle armor includes a full metal cuirass instead of lamellar plate (even Tywin and Jaime wear those and they have seen a lot more battles than Tyrion). The other was Joffrey, but he was a king.

** To Ned Stark who served as ''The Hand'' in Season 1. Ned showed what happened when you applied HonorBeforeReason in politics refusing to make any compromise whatsover. Tyrion is not a CorruptPolitician at all, but he accepts the demands of {{Realpolitik}} far better and is able to curtail the excesses and machinations of the King and Cersei far better than Ned, as Varys noted. Of course, while Tyrion manages to get better results, he's not able to escape his [[HeroWithBadPublicity reputation]] and his father's shadow, though he does survive for a little while, before ending up, like Ned, as a scapegoat for the Lannisters, even given the same opportunity to join the Night's Watch and escape execution.

* AdaptationalHeroism: Taken to such extremes that he's practically a different character altogether. Book Tyrion was [[https://web.archive.org/web/19991013131915/http://cyberhaven.com/books/sciencefiction/martin.html explicitly described]] by George R.R. Martin as a villain, and partakes in all sorts of horrendous acts including raping slaves and setting loose ravaging barbarians on civilians out of spite. Show Tyrion is a pretty standard hero who just happens to have a [[DeadpanSnarker rather sarcastic sense of humor.]] Furthermore, in the books:

* BrutalHonesty: Tyrion doesn't hesitate to speak his mind when he thinks the situation calls for it. This often gains him [[RefugeInAudacity respect for his earnestness]], but also lands him in problems from time to time when his abrupt input is not appreciated.
** Daenerys, however, appreciates his honesty, which results in her initially taking him on as her advisor, and then ultimately, her Hand (a position in which brutal honesty is required).

** Invoked in "The Children." Tyrion paraphrases this trope while explaining his actions in the episode to Tywin; after all, [[NotSoDifferent how would Tywin act when an enemy is in a disadvantageous position and is insulting him?]] The fact that said enemy is Tywin himself on the toilet insulting the just-murdered Shae while Tyrion covers him with a crossbow doesn't change the answer to that question.

* ScrewTheRulesIHaveMoney: [[NotSoDifferent Like father, like son]]. His go-to solution in problematic situations is to attempt to buy his way out. However, his particular skill is offering money in a charismatic and [[RefugeInAudacity audacious way]], which allows him to win the loyalty of those he pays off.

* AbledInTheAdaptation: In the books, Tyrion actually lost his nose in the assassination attempt on him during the Battle of Blackwater. Here, the attempt only left him with a typical facial scar, [[MythologyGag although Cersei tells her brother that she had heard he had lost his nose when she sees him again]]. In the books he also has deformed legs that make it difficult for him to walk and very painful to kneel, giving him a pronounced waddling gait that the show verion lacks.
