Powerful demons who serve Arius in his attempt to stall Dante and Lucia during the course of their journey. These are [[TheBrute Orangguerra]], [[StockNessMonster Jokatgulm]], [[DemonicPossession Infestant]], [[EldritchAbomination Nefasturris]], [[MagmaMan Furiataurus]], [[SeaMonster Tateobesu]], [[BladeOnAStick Bolverk]], [[MothMenace Noctpteran]], [[MacGuffinGuardian Tartarussian & Plutonian]], and [[ThatOneBoss Trismagia]]. Although there's nothing much to say about them individually, they make up a significant portion of the game's boss fights.\\\

* BladeOnAStick: Bolverk's weapon of choice is an extendable spear with a huge blade. It also further cements his status as a ShoutOut to [[Myth/NorseMythology Odin]].

* MacabreMothMotif: Dante and Lucia fight Noctpteran, an enormous moth, as one of the bosses. The moth by itself isn't dangerous, but the eggs it lays hatch into larva that try to eat them.

* LuringInPrey: Dagon and Bael's species can [[CastingAShadow create darkness]] and [[StepIntoTheBlindingFight disappear into it]], only leaving their antennae/lures visible, which resemble beautiful, naked nymphs called Rusalka who play with each other to entice victims to get within striking range. Dante plays along with the Rusalka, but is not fooled by the trick, while Nero simply ignores their seduction and fights them afterwards.

* LiterallyShatteredLives: Their death animations in the rematches, where they are frozen and shattered.

* LuringInPrey: Can use the pretty Rusalka demons on his feelers to lure his opponents. Of course, Dante is not fooled. Nero ignores them.

* AlluringAnglerfish: Can use the pretty Rusalka demons on his feelers to lure his opponents. Of course, Dante is not fooled. Nero ignores them.

* AmphibianAtLarge: They are gigantic toad-like demons each with [[AlluringAnglerfish two anglerfish-like glowing feelers called Rusalka]] that they can use to lure and attack prey.

* AnIcePerson: In "slime" form, Nightmare sends out little black slugs that latch onto Dante, freeze him, and explode into ice. In "solid" form, standing directly in front of it will prompt it to fire a high-damaging ice beam with a long duration from its "mouth."

* HorrifyingTheHorror: The Vision's of V Manga reveal that, when Mundus created Nightmare, even he was disturbed by the potential destructive power he had created, choosing to bind it in order to reign in it's power to a more manageable level.

* PowerParasite: Each time Nightmare absorbs Dante, it takes away some of his health and his Devil Trigger bar. If allowed to do this enough times, it will be able to activate a ''Devil Trigger'' of its own.

*** Argosax is a demon lord who was defeated by Sparda, similar to Mundus. Argosax differs from Mundus in three ways. Firstly, while Mundus is depicted as male, Argosax is OtherworldlyAndSexuallyAmbiguous. The second way they differ is the evolution of their forms during the final battle; Mundus starts out with angelic form that gives way to a hideous BlobMonster form. Argosax starts out as a weird amalgamation of previous bosses before its true form is revealed to be that of a fiery angelic creature. While Mundus relied mainly on long-ranged attacks, Argosax in its final form focused on closing the distance through teleportation.

** Arius is an EvilSorcerer and CorruptCorporateExecutive who wears a white suit.

* DivinelyAppearingDemons: Moments prior to the FinalBoss fight, Mundus initially appears in a massive, cathedral-like chamber, and his stone visage is carved to resemble a handsome, three-eyed angel. As the battle rages on and his statuesque form is ripped apart, his true grotesque demonic features are revealed underneath.
* TheEmperor: Was the ruler of the Demon World before Sparda sealed him away.

* LightIsNotGood: He looks like an angel or a Greek/Roman god (with [[ThirdEye three eyes]], but still), and even has his lair in what looks like a ''church'', for crying out loud! He also uses a giant laser beam of light during the first round of his boss fight. However, he is actively referred to as the Prince of Darkness and the ruler of Hell.

* LightIsNotGood: The Despair Embodied is a demonic being whose form looks like a fiery angel.
* LiterallyShatteredLives: The Despair Embodied shatters into pieces when Dante blew it up with his gun.

* LightIsNotGood: He has angelic wings and the power of sacred light, but he's still a devil.

* DivinelyAppearingDemons: Several [[CorruptChurch Order of the Sword]] members went through experiments combining human and demon DNA. Despite this, their demonic forms are either covered up by their templar outfits, strongly resemble angels, or are fused with [[AnimatedArmor hollow angelic armors]]. Agnus is an inversion because his transformed appearance is more insectoid than angelic.

* DivinelyAppearingDemons: Several [[CorruptChurch Order of the Sword]] members went through experiments combining human and demon DNA. Despite this, their demonic forms are either covered up by their templar outfits, strongly resemble angels, or are fused with [[AnimatedArmor hollow angelic armors]]. Sanctus is a subversion as he retains a holy visage after the Ascension Ceremony, but his [[spoiler:Diabolica form in the finale gives him demonic features and a corrupted appearance]].

* LightIsNotGood: Head of a church, wears white, quite evil.

* DivinelyAppearingDemons: Artemis is a cross between a mermaid and a seraphim (a six-winged celestial being).

* LightIsNotGood: Artemis has an angelic appearance, uses laser blasts and its sobriquet is "The Illuminating Corruption".

* DivinelyAppearingDemon: Artemis is a cross between a mermaid and a seraphim (a six-winged celestial being).

* SexIsViolence: The boss battle with Nevan. [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything The pre-fight cutscene looks more like a prostitute propositioning a john in a brothel]], she taunts Dante by calling him "sugar", [[OrgasmicCombat makes noises that sound like she's climaxing whenever she takes a hit]], can replenish her health by kissing Dante and after being defeated, compliments him while he holds her in a lover's embrace.

* ShockAndAwe: She has electrical powers.
* ShoutOut: One to [[{{VideoGame/Darkstalkers}} Morrigan]]

** Vergil wields Beowulf, a pair of [[PowerFist gauntlets]] and [[ArmedLegs greaves]] infused with light magic.
** Sanctus, Credo and Agnus are members of the Order of the Sword, a religious organization that worships Sparda and is in charge of defending Fortuna from demon attacks. They are also revealed to be experimenting with turning humans into demons to become more powerful and are willing to use humans like Kyrie as sacrifices in their goals. The Order all wear white uniforms and their demon forms are deliberately designed to look more like angels than demons, with Credo outright calling himself an angel the first time we see him transform.

* AmbiguousGender: The Despair Embodied is said to be a ''he'', but appears as an androgynous horned being [[ElementalEmbodiment made of fire]] whose sex changes depending on its weapon; the male uses a FlamingSword, while the female brandishes a {{whip|ItGood}}.

* OtherworldlyAndSexuallyAmbiguous: The Despair Embodied is able to freely shapeshift between a male and female form, depending on its weapon; the male uses a FlamingSword, while the female brandishes a {{whip|ItGood}}.

* RecurringBoss: You fight him ''five'' times, although only two those are mandatory boss fights. [[spoiler:Add two more as Vergil.]]
