The film would premiere in theatres across Japan under the project on March 2nd, 2013, to weak reception, as the film failed to gain traction in Japan, with one event being cancelled due to not enough tickets being sold.

The film was later released on a limited Blu-Ray release in summer of 2013 courtesy of Actii and would also be included in the physical Blu-Ray release of its crowdfunded sequel, ''Anime/LittleWitchAcademiaTheEnchantedParade''.

''Little Witch Academia'' is a half-hour short film produced as part of Japan's "Young Animator Training Project," a government-sponsored program which hopes to train new animators under the guidance of industry masters; in this case, Yoh Yoshinari of ''Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann'' and ''Anime/PantyAndStockingWithGarterbelt'' fame, directed the short film under the newly formed Creator/StudioTrigger, becoming one of the studio's first major projects.

Studio Trigger later uploaded the short film on Website/YouTube with full English subtitles, though it was later removed. Acttil, a video game and anime localization company, released the short film on Blu-ray in North America in Summer 2013, which became the company's first release.
