* AllThereInTheManual: Like earlier henchmen the Turles Crusher Corps from ''Anime/TheTreeOfMight'', the backstories of Cooler's Armored Squadron are revealed offscreen -- specifically in Daizenshu 6, which reveals that Cooler's subordinate Salza is a member of the same race as the Ginyu Force's Jeice[[note]]They come from different planets in the same star system[[/note]], explaining their similar appearances. Dore is explained to be a wrestler from a LethalLavaLand planet who won 300 matches straight and killed all his opponents, while Neiz is an evolved amphibian from a planet covered with water.

* AvengingTheVillain: The whole of premise of the movie is. However, Cooler does this to restore honor to his family, and for that reason only. He and Frieza would probably have fought it out themselves sooner or later.

* ButForMeItWasTuesday: Cooler is implied to feel this way about blowing up/ conquering planets.

* CardCarryingVillain: Cooler described himself as more cruel than his brother. Seeing his actually less monstrous personality though, he probably just considers his power alone to be more terrifying than all of his brother's sadism.
* ChessmasterSidekick: Cooler's similar to General Blue in this regard. Not only is he much stronger than his father and brother, but he also has more self control: he doesn't execute henchmen for nothing, doesn't go berserk when it looks like he's outmatched, doesn't underestimate opponents, and can control his power enough to be in his final form all the time (contrast Frieza, who had his first three forms specifically to limit his power, because he couldn't properly control and sustain it). He could easily overthrow them, yet he doesn't.
* CombatPragmatist: After Goku manages to blast him off of Earth, Cooler briefly considers just blowing up the sun and letting Goku freeze to death. Once again, this is in contrast to his brother. Goku notes that if Frieza wanted to blow up the planet and let Goku suffocate, he couldn't really have done anything to stop him, yet Frieza prolongs the destruction of the planet to test Goku's abilities.
* ComboBreaker: This is the very first of the DBZ movies in which the Eternal Dragon Shenron is not summoned. He does not appear in a DBZ movie again until ''Anime/WrathOfTheDragon''.

* ExpyCoexistence: Cooler is obviously based on Frieza, and his QuirkyMiniBossSquad in the first film is inspired by the Ginyu Force. Then again, he is Frieza's brother, so..

* EvilIsHammy: Cooler. Like his brother, but in a different way. Frieza was smug and calm when he was winning and absolutely berserk when outmatched. Cooler is the opposite; after he beats down kaio-ken x20 Goku, he yells a dramatic speech and starts cackling. But when Super Saiyan Goku proves too much for him in straight combat, he starts calmly laughing before throwing a Supernova at him.

* LackOfEmpathy: Cooler has a supreme LackOfEmpathy towards the Z fighters. He does appear to sympathize with his henchmen, however.

* MuggingTheMonster: The Armored Squadron saw Piccolo as little more than a nuisance when he showed up. He hands them their respective asses in short order.

Neiz is killed by his own attack, Dore is killed almost nonchalantly by Piccolo's Tsuibidan (Pursuing Bullet) a move Piccolo hasn't used his Dragonball, and one Goku turned against him easily, and Salza is thrown backwards by Goku powering up and doesn't emerge from the rubble until the very end, when he's shot in the back.

The ''only'' reason he even goes to Earth to avenge Frieza in the first place was because, in his opinion, Frieza disgraced their family name by losing to Goku and felt it was up to him to redeem it.

* CoolMask: Cooler dons this as an aesthetic feature of his ultimate form.

* EvilOverlord: Cooler. Similar to his brother, Freeza, though Cooler seemingly outranks him.

* NoSell: Cooler, in his transformed state, can easily take anything Goku throws at him, including a Kamehameha at kaio-Ken X 20. Once Goku becomes a Super Saiyan, however, it's Cooler who can't hurt his opponent. Goku doesn't react at all to a punch in the abdomen and even a point-blank energy blast only causes superficial wounds. Unfortunately, Cooler still has his Supernova; which Goku can't NoSell, not even as a Super Saiyan.
* NotSoDifferent: Throughout the movie, Cooler commented that Freeza was '[[BondVillainStupidity too soft]]'. In his final moments when Goku blasts him into the sun, he realizes that because he didn't kill Goku years earlier when he was flying to Earth, ''he'' was soft as well!

* OneWingedAngel: Cooler ''starts'' the battle in the form his brother ''ended'' his in, and reveals he has an ''extra'' transformation that Frieza didn't have. Didn't do him much good.

* PunchPunchPunchUhOh: Cooler punches Goku straight in the abdomen... only for the Super Saiyan to NoSell his blow.

* ShootTheDog: Cooler nearly kills Gohan and forces Goku to take the attack for him, taking him out of comission for most of the film.

* EldritchAbomination: In the sequel, the Big Gete Star. It is also a rare example of a mechanical one. Basically, it's a planet-sized tumor that drains the resources of the planet it infects.

* ItsPersonal: Downplayed but Cooler definitely wants to get back at Goku for his previous defeat in the sequel. Averted in the first film, where Cooler just has beef with Goku because the latter besmirched his family's honor by killing Frieza.

* PhlebotinumOverload: How Cooler and the Big Gete Star die in the sequel. Cooler attempts to absorb Goku and Vegeta's Super Saiyan power, only for them to cause the Star's system's to go haywire.

* CanonDiscontinuity: The movie ostensibly takes place after Frieza's death, but Vegeta doesn't appear, Gohan is still the same age as he was during Namek, and Goku is alive and on Earth even though he doesn't return for years in the canon series. The movie features a late Saiyan-saga main cast even though it takes place well after the Namek sagas, meaning it doesn't realistically fit into the canon timeline.
