This needs cleanup. A lot of examples are just once that had controversies but are not overshadowed by them. For example the developer section in video games lists Paradox because of the price hike controversy, but Paradox is still a well respected studio with a good reputation at least compared to likes of EA and Activision/Blizzard. I beleive the trope should only apply if the drama surrounding the subject is the first things that comes to mind when it's name is brought up otherwise it should not apply

The series has to have been around for at least six months, and the controversy needs to have lasted at least six months to qualify for an entry on these pages, if I recall the rules correctly.

Not lasted, but still the main point of discussion after at least that after the controversy occurred. If you still wish to list it, I’d recommend taking it to the cleanup thread.

I feel like Friday Night Funkin' should be added to the video game section because the game is a massive drama magnet, from the mod scene's shenanigans to the harassment of the developers of the actual game (namely Kawai Sprite). I feel like more people know it for its drama-filled fanbase than anything else, and this has been going on for at least 6 months.

Is it a new controversy? Because the rules say we can't add examples until six months after a controversy began.

Got some confusion on this with a edit and PM, so figured I'd also share it here.

The Note that I had added to the edit about 'Long Way to Fall' was from the review spam of the nature being discussed. Here are two other review pages with the same sort of review spam, though it is not the same words I think it does show what I was going for.

https://www.fanfiction.net/r/13165512/0/2/ https://www.fanfiction.net/r/6830639/

...Perhaps I should have clarified the note as an example of the sort of spam that this fic is linked to as a better form of clarity. My bad in that case.

Ahhhhh, I get it now. Since you hadn't put quotation marks, I didn't notice that you were actually quoting the spam in question. Talk about a misunderstanding on my part. In this case, I'll make sure to add it back myself, now with the quotation marks to clarify that it's a cited quote. Sorry for the inconvenience.

This entry:

  • Its very hard to talk about Goblin Slayer without bringing up its infamous R-Rated Opening where an adventuring party is graphically raped and murdered by Goblins.

was removed for the following reason: "That's No Such Thing as Bad Publicity as it was successful despite, if anything it brought the series to the attention of those who would have overlooked it otherwise."

I don't know anything about this case in particular, but in general I don't think "the controversy drew attention to the work" and "it was successful anyway" are sufficient to delete an OBC example. You can have a work that got attention thanks to a controversy and is mostly remembered for said controversy. Success does not mean it's not OBC either - even a successful work can end up having a controversy overshadow its other aspects, and the page mentions that an OBC work can well-regarded by critics and those who consumed the work.

We have Signature Scene for the most remembered, talked about, and audience-influencing moments of the work which said opening is already listed under. That might be what you're describing.

Overshadowed might apply, but said success is evidence against that similar evidence for should also be provided.

He's currently listed under the "Live-Action TV" section, not the "Real Life" section.

As for including him in "Real Life", I believe it was decided that he can't be included, because his Presidency had so many controversies that no single controversy could be said to overshadow him, sorta like how Monty Burns never gets sick because he has so many diseases already inside his body that they kill off any new pathogens.

This has popped up a bit on Spacebattles Dot Com, so I want to ask if we should put a note on Activision Blizzard here.

Skeleton of Entry:

  • In 2021, Activision Blizzard was sued over extreme claims of sexual harassment in the workplace (including one employee taking her life, with investigators revealing that her boss had joined her at a company retreat while bringing a sex toy and lubricant in his car). Furthering the issue was that the lawsuit was being pushed by the State of California, and in a manner that generally isn't done unless the prosection expects to win. Blizzard did themselves no favors by essentially denying the claims in their entirety. It's gotten to the point that many streamers have halted coverage over Blizzard content.note .

As it's not really indicated on the main page, how much time should pass at minimum before a controversy can be considered to be overshadowing? I'm asking this in light of the accusations of infidelity and sexual exploitation of minors being levied at YouTube game reviewer ProJared, which seem to have demolished the man's reputation virtually overnight. However, it's still a recent event, and while I do think this is the kind of thing that one would consider eligible for this page ("frequent displays of offensive, embarrassing, or questionable behavior"), I do not know if enough time has passed for it to be considered an appropriate addition to this page.

I understand that this is a sensitive topic that is best left not touched upon and that I probably shouldn't even be writing this, but the entry under Depression Quest contains an Egregious factual error. Namely, it refers to the allegations against Zoe Quinn as being false. In reality, she openly admitted to her involvement in the sex scandal. Now, Gamer Gate is a sensitive subject. I get that. But we can't change the facts. Personally, I feel that it would be best to remove the entry. Let's leave everything in Gamer Gate alone until this whole crapstorm blows over.

She openly admitted that she had sex with some people.

She denied that she had sex with some people for positive game coverage - support for this claim comes from the fact that no positive game coverage exists.

Having sex with people isn't a crime.

Sadly, it's 2016, and this whole controversy is still going on, with no end in sight. Granted, it's not as heated as 2014-2015, but there's still a lot of lingering anger as a whole.

Should we just put up Depression Quest's entry, with just a general mentions to controversy without referring to Gamergate by name?

So the example:

"* My Little Pony Annual 2014 was dead on arrival the instant someone noticed a certain incredibly controversial (let's just leave it at that) Original Character the writer had slipped in, and the entire story and plot was instantly forgotten in favor of intense arguing, debate, Flame Wars, and even calling for said writer to be fired. It's been over a year at this point and that writer and IDW still take flak for it from the fanbase, and the majority of the fanbase only knows that issue as "the one that caused all the arguing"."

...was deleted because a user "doesn't think one word of this is what it's actually about." However there was considerable controversy over it that is still discussed to this day. Thoughts?

Mostly it's to avoid Edit Wars, drama, and Justifying Edits. Like I said this still causes a ton of controversy to this very day (a lot of fans instantly declare any comic written by him to be automatic crap), and odds are if more details were given it would result in a ton of arguing and fighting. At the same time, it's a valid entry that should be here since it's probably the most controversial thing to have happened surrounding the comics. It's sort of a double-edged sword, but I feel this is the best and most fair way to put it in as a valid entry.

If you guys like (but only if you want since it's beligerent, long, and I'd need to sniff up some external links to back my claims, and I'm not about to type it all out if nobody wants it) I could give a brutally honest play-by-play of the whole thing and we could decide if any extra info is a good idea to insert.

I think that even though Charlie Brown was thrown a bone for kissing the little red-haired girl, the infamous "football scene" where everyone blames Charlie Brown for costing them the football game (even though it was clear Lucy was sabotaging them) is what they remember and is a moment even the biggest Peanuts fans look down on with contempt.
