This is a wiki policy page, not an Internet Trope. That one would be suited for YKTTW.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAgain, who's deciding what goes on this page or not? Who made who king?
Hide / Show RepliesWhat, you mean the "common" snowclones? I dunno. Statistics does. Don't take it too seriously, it's not a blacklist. It's more of a "think it through before you suggest this as a title, we get plenty and most suck".
A good snowclone will get considered and a bad snowclone thrown out regardless of whether they're on this list or not.
Pretentious quote || In-joke from fandom you've never heard of || Shameless self-promotion || Something weird you'll habituate toIt was decided in YKTTW long ago, and got Fast Eddie's approval.
Edited by AMNKAnother possible one: X, So It Sucks. I see a number of tropes follow this format.
To answer the question: Fast Eddie made himself king, and has recently begun to act like it.
In response to spacemarine50, I think that should go under "Snowclones that work"; they're all arbitrary things that breed very similar reactions.
"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerWhat about Did You Just Index Cthulhu?? Because my Hijacking Cthulhu YKTTW got a bit of flack for its original title, "Did You Just Hijack Cthulhu?"
I'm too old to be cute dammitSomeone with the authority to edit locked pages needs to change the last sentence of the "Our X Are Different" example from:
This is not true for variations on the pattern that don't use the word different.
to
This is not true for variations on the pattern that don't use the word "Different."
Without the quotation marks, it looks like it's saying that it's not true for variations on the pattern that don't use an unspecified word differently than the way other variations use that unspecified word. I'm sure some people see that sentence and know what it means immediately, but it took me forever to figure out what it was supposed to be saying.
Hide / Show RepliesPlease take it to this thread, mate.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynmanwhy Snowclones? its similarity to snow cone made me miss read the title a large number of times. i don't see what this has to do with snow. do i just have a bad sense of humor?
Edited by captainsandwichIf the Inuit have a hundred names for snow, TV Tropes must have a thousand names for snowclones. Why not list them on the page?
More problematic snowclones:
- X Gambit
- X Syndrome
- X Effect (With the exception of "sound" preceding X")
Sometimes
- Badass X
What have already been renamed are Elfman Effect (Recycled Trailer Music), The Moriarty Effect (Breakout Villain), The Casey Effect (Down to the Last Play), The Pikachu Effect (Third-Option Adaptation) and P Wing Effect (Too Awesome to Use).
At the moment we have Worf Effect, Chris Carter Effect, Coconut Effect, The Firefly Effect, The Dulcinea Effect, Ermine Cape Effect, Sukhomlinov Effect and so on. Some other X Effect snowclones are either a bit more descriptive though (especially when they're about sound effects or special effects) or are definitions in use outside media.
Well, basically, trying to name X Effect where X is a character or a work is not very good idea since if the name sticks, newcomers may have hard time to find the trope.

There should IMO be something about snowcloned comments in (usually) internet discussions where one person changes a word or two to make a point, mock a foolish idea, or just because they're too lazy to think up a witty line on their own. For example.
Person A: This is what a highlighter in the microwave looks like. Just in case you were wondering. Person B: This is what a soon to be deleted post looks like. Just in case you were wondering. Person C: This is what a lazy reply looks like. Just in case you were wondering.
This will often continue until someone posts something different, often followed by an announcement of "c-c-c-combo breaker!"
