Find a Trope:
openEnding trope Anime
At the end of the 90s version of Sailor Moon, Usagi says "The End", followed by the Inner Guardians saying "See ya!"
Which ending trope best fits this description?
Edited by gjjonesopenHiding behind gender-neutral descriptors Anime
This is currently listed as an example of Exact Words, but I'm wondering if it belongs to Pronoun Trouble.
Serial Numbers Filed Off version: Alex asks Bob to describe his girlfriend, not knowing Bob is Closet Gay. Bob uses a list of gender-neutral descriptors that does apply to his boyfriend Carl, but to Alex, Bob sounds like he's describing some kind of Meganekko.
- Bob: They're really smart, and composed. They're also hardworking, and really dependable. Also... they look cute in glasses.
The English translation is certainly an example of Pronoun Trouble (using "they" to hide somebody's gender), but how about the original text?
openNo Title Anime
A non-existent anime about happy adorable kawaii animals (like Hello Kitty) from an extremely peaceful world uses only harsh soundtracks that reach Level 11 of Mohs Scale Of Rock And Metal Hardness (Example: Power noise).
Edited by ckha42openTake Them Down A Peg? Anime
A talented newcomer joins an established team. Mid-skill members of the team feel threatened, so they try to humiliate the newcomer by proposing a contest where the newcomer has to compete at some hilariously obvious deficit. The bullies seem to think that their victory will demoralize or shame the new guy, even though the contest is clearly rigged. This isn't about being sneaky. The newcomer usually manages to win even with the handicap, and the bullies are usually caught by an authority figure, resulting in their own embarrassment.
Seen in Hikaru no Go when Akira is pressured by juniors of his new team into playing three simultaneous games of go, without being able to see any of the boards, while cleaning a storage room. In Prince of Tennis, second year players demand that Echizen play a match using a dilapidated old racket.
openDon't care exactly how it works, just that it does. Anime
Trope where person doesn't care how exactly how something is possible and doesn't bother exploring how it came to be or how it was made. The trope isn't Seen It All though.
openNot prepared for daunting task ahead Anime
Trope for when someone is woefully unprepared for a daunting task they're forced to undertake.
openA disease affects someone's behaviour Anime
I see Freudian Excuse being used for someone whose violent behaviour is caused by a degenerative brain disease, but that seems misuse; "Freudian" relates to psychology, not diagnosed physical conditions. Do we have a trope that fits better?
openCharacter wants to quit but company doesn't allow it so they retaliate Anime
Is there a trope for a character who works for a company is done with them and just wants to quit and bury the hatchet but the company doesnt like that one bit. So they try to use blackmail and emotionally abusive tactics on them so they stay. That just makes them want to dig their heels in more and they make it so much harder to work with them they're sorry they even opened their mouths.
openSecret test of moral character Anime
Is there a trope for a hero who's been betrayed before he launches a secret test of character at some of his friends to see what they'd do and if they'd betray his trust when he got back? They have no idea the test is happening either.
openFake abandonment only to find help Anime
Is there a trope for someone running away and abandoning his teammates in danger only to find out he only left to return with help?
openSome kind of alcohol censorship, but not quite Frothy Mugs of Water Anime
A class does a beer-hall-themed place for their School Festival, but because they and many of the visitors are underage, they use apple juice float as a substitute.
The substitution is already there in the source material, so I doubt it's Frothy Mugs of Water. The substitution also has ample in-universe justification. So what is it?
open"Hear our plea!" anime trope Anime
When someone, like our main hero, calls out to the world to give them energy to fight.
EDIT: Nevermind, it's Combined Energy Attack!
Edited by Monolaf317openDramatic Strength VS Comedic Strength Anime
Goku can withstand punches from monsters strong enough to destroy the universe without flinching, but in a comedic scene, Bulma can knock him out because he said something dumb.
Is there a trope for that?
openFalling on butt Anime
I know there are tropes such as Pain to the Ass that cover butt pain, but I was wondering about falling on the butt specifically. Something I see a lot of times is falling on the butt on anime especially with cute girls is if they fall on something such as another person butt first they are safe (and it is cutesy), but rarely I see the tailbone or spinal issues that can come from it shown.
openSlowly getting over hatred of powers for his family Anime
Is there a trope for someone with a fierce hatred of powers only to learn his family secretly has them? He pretends to be okay with it but he's slowly trying to work through his hatred for it. In the end he does get over it.
openWhere powers are incredibly rare so meeting large family who has one is beyond strange and weird. Anime
What do you call when having a power is incredibly rare to possess. Then you come across this family where everyone possesses one with varying degrees of strength is strange and weird.
openBack of neck grab/lift Anime
I keep seeing a certain grab where smaller characters (usually female but can be male) are grabbed by the clothing behind their neck or upper shoulders and lifted. It kind of looks like this (https://i.imgur.com/R2NxJo9.jpg). Like see how she is lifted? The area she is held by.
I have seen the same kind of grab on Jade from Jackie Chan Adventures and also Cell does this to Android 17 (male example) in DBZ. I have seen it before in other places I can't currently remember.
Edited by HomelesssopenLooking for a trope about characters who are little more than lists of powers Anime
I saw the page several days ago. Probably has something to do with Mary Sue tropes. I only remember one quote about how one entry is an entire page of lots of powers and abilities. It was probably from the bleach Fanfiction Wiki and had something to do with naruto.
A lot of anime featuring a preteen/pubescent boy protagonist involves them having some kind of professional relationship with an adult woman or much older teen who is sexually aggressive towards them. Due to the Double Standard Rape: Female on Male, this is generally Played for Laughs or for titilation, even though the protagonist's reaction usually to this ranges from discomfort to Tsundere-style ambiguity. Marshmallow Hell is often involved but I'm looking more for the relationship dynamic/character archetype.
Examples include Misato from Neon Genesis Evangelion and Haruko from FLCL.
