Find a Trope:
open"I'm the best, screw the rest" Live Action TV
Is there a trope for the "I'm the best, screw the rest" way of thinking?
Edited by calil_bfropenResponding to viewer messages Web Original
In episode 5a Battle for Dream Island Again https://youtu.be/4q77g4xo9ic?t=508 Golf Ball and Match respond to comments of them by the viewers.
openSociopath, but with good intentions
Is there a trope, where one person from a group is willingly crossing the Moral Event Horizon, and is more pragmatic rather than emotional, but does it to ensure survival of majority? Such as killing children for being a liability for the group, or sacrificing one for sake of the rest?
openA character is good at a skill they dislike.
Does this one exist.
Basically a character is skilled and good at something, but for whatever reason, they actually don’t care or dislike that thing entirely. But for some reason, they do it anyway (either out of money, the limelight, etc).
I know, there’s more specific tropes such as Hates the Job, Loves the Limelight, but I’m looking for something broader in nature.
Like for an example, an artist is very skilled at drawing, but is shown to actually dislike drawing, but does it anyway because he’s just that good at it and he gets financial support by doing it.
Edited by Tylerbear12openUltimate Insult
The absolute worst insult one can give in a particular language or culture. Sometimes backfires when dealing with different cultures (e.g. the Proud Warrior Race's worst insult is Not Worth Killing, which is quite a relief to the "insulted" victim), but usually means somebody dies when in the same language.
openAdding fuel to a fire
Is there any trope for situation where someone strong and/or with some advantages is made (involuntary or not) made even stronger by providing them with further advantage? Sort of "give an oni a kanabo"?
openArgument of contradictions, but they're not arguing, just namecalling.
Like this:
openCreature Created for Good turns Evil
Awesome McCoolname was created by Jack the Good Scientist with the purpose of being the protector of the village called Troperia. For one reason or another, Awesome becomes evil, destroys Troperia and does the same to many other villages.
Think of the Dark Lord of Animator vs. Animation: He was created as a protector set to defeat the villainous Chosen One, but teamed up with him and became evil.
Edited by RK93openDystopian teen YA novel
A specific literature genre that became popular in The New '10s: YA novels that take place in dystopias and have angsty teenagers as their protagonists, with The Protagonist often being female. Oftentimes, these novels will deal with a divided society of sorts. Examples include:
- The Hunger Games
- Divergent
- Uglies
- Matched
- The Maze Runner
- The Giver
- Teen Lit Wasteland (a satire of the genre)
openSlime Mouth Strands
When a Blob Monster or something similar has strands of slime (or whatever they're made of) dripping from the top of, or stretching along the entire height of, its mouth. Examples include the Shadow Blot◊ from Epic Mickey and Drawcia Soul◊ from Kirby: Canvas Curse.
It creates an effect similar to Scary Stitches.
Do we have this, and does it sound tropeworthy?
Edited by DrNoPumaopenSecret Preserved For The Seeker's Sake
Bob is on the trail of a secret that Alice knows, but refuses to tell him. It turns out to be an Awful Truth about Bob himself, and every attempt to prevent Bob from finding out was done to spare him.
e.g. Bob wants to know why there's so little information available about his Disappeared Dad, and the more he looks into it the more he becomes convinced there's a vast conspiracy headed by Alice (his dad's former best friend) bent on silencing the truth, and believes based on the information available his father was a war hero who was killed after opposing a series of civilian massacres. But when he finally discovers the truth, it turns out that his dad is a Retired Monster who faked his own death after setting up and gleefully participating in said massacres, and is now legally and practically untouchable, living the dream life on a tropical island. Utterly broken, Bob returns to Alice, who tells him she did all this so Bob could have a normal life.
Edited by Chabal2openFitness Nut
Someone who's obsessed with their personal fitness, be it for personal or health reasons, often exercising for long hours and taking tons of supplements while carefully watching every single calorie they eat.
I've seen Granola Girl used for this, but I don't think that's quite right.
openEver-Changing Layout
A place that can be described as being in some sort of "Flux" state, where the layout is constantly changing. One example is the castle in Rogue Legacy- unless the player locks the castle down, it'll be a new, randomized layout every time.
openEpisode titles read aloud
Is there a trope for the practice of the episode title being read aloud? This trope is very common in children's media.
Edited by mimitchi33openNever say "abortion"
Is it Deadly Euphemism when someone uses phrases like "remove" or "get rid of" when talking about aborting?
openPoorly hidden romance
Somebody is trying to hide that they have a crush on someone, or two people are trying to keep their relationship a secret, but everyone figures it out anyway. I was thinking Everyone Can See It, but it doesn't quite fit.
openSecret Kids vs. Parents?
A group of kids (usually the protagonists) discovers that their parents, or other adults they interact with frequently, are up to some nefarious scheme. For some reason, they don't have any other trusted adults to tell - it's up to the kids to stop the adults from completing their dastardly plan, or at least to resist under the radar until help can arrive. Related tropes include Kid Hero, Competence Zone, sometimes Recruit Teenagers with Attitude, but I can't find this one specifically. Media I can think of include Animorphs and The Blackout Club, though those are both pretty dark examples...
(Sorry if I messed up any of the formatting, btw! This is my first post here.)
openDisgusted By God
A trope where a character is disgusted by God-worshiping religions and (depending on the context), God as a being.
openTeam Member Remembered Film
Is there a specific trope for a situation in which a newcomer (usually a Naïve Newcomer ) is welcomed to a team, and the team members repeatedly allude to a lost teammate from before?
It would be a sub-trope of a Noodle Incident, only it's always specifically a person's name. It could be related to the Posthumous Character, except there's never any detail given as to what the person was like ... other than missed by their former comrades. It seems like it goes hand-in-hand with Defeat as Backstory, or might be a less extreme, more personal version of it. The absent person could possibly be The Lost Lenore, except it's not a romantic relationship - it's a relationship with a group.
The two examples that first come to mind are Pecos in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension and Horseflesh in Time Bandits. Both are never shown on screen and we don't know what they were like - other than the fact that they're still brought up in conversation by Team Banzai and the time-traveling gang, respectively. I want to say the same trope appears in Inception and the Oceans 11 series, but I'm not positive. When the Lemonheads named an album It's a Shame About Ray, it seems like they were playing with the same trope - we know nothing about Ray other than his name, and that a group of people miss him.

There is Ponzi and Get-Rich-Quick Scheme, but since the business tactics of MLMs receive more critical attention, there are an increasing number of jabs against pyramid scheme businesses mostly in comedy shows. Either a character gets sucked into one, or they encounter a neigbour trying to shill them products. The MLMs are usually fictional, but the real life equivalent is always obvious.
