Find a Trope:
openDarkness trope? Film
Is there such a trope for when the creator of a movie tries to get viewers to feel the In-Universe apathy the Apathetic Citizens have (not the same as Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy) so they can feel they're part of the show, not just watching it?
Edited by Merseyuser1openBad Guy Killed by the Thing He Said Was Safe? Film
No idea where to look for this, I'm just wondering if there's a TV Tropes trope for the situation where the bad guy/stuffed shirt has been insisting all along that The Deadly Thing is actually fine, everybody's just worrying about nothing, don't listen to The Hero because they just don't have the guts for this work, etc., and then The Deadly Thing, completely predictably, kills or tries to kill the bad guy and/or stuffed shirt. I'm having a hard time coming up with an example from fiction, actually (I'm sure it's obvious that President Trump's COVID-19 diagnosis brought this to mind.) To be clear, at the time I'm writing this, it's Sunday, October 4, and the President is reported to be recovering at Walter Reed with the possibility of discharge on October 5, although the doctors' weird evasions are making a lot of people wonder if the public is being given a true picture.
openAll People of Colour Are Related Film
Is there a trope for having two people of colour always be related?
I'm thinking of Men in Black where the only other black character in that universe to be black also happened to be the father of Jay.
Or how in a city of millions, Myles Morales, happens to be related to one of Spider-man's only black villains, The Prowler
Or in X-Men Evolution where the creators created the character Spyke and then made it so the only black characters on the team (he and Storm) were blood relations.
Or in Justice League Unlimited where the only other black member in the future was the son of the teams previous black member
Edited by Otherworlderopencloning a dead person as replacement Film
Once upon a time I watched a film about parents who have lost a child and embarked on a quest to clone her; it felt a bit like the "crusading grieving parent" trope crossed with Ripped from the Headlines, the headlines in question being about Dolly the sheep or something like that that the screenwriter must've read at some point. (Edit: it seems to be After Amy/No Ordinary Child.)
There is a philosophical problem in it — like, whether are we justified in treating the clone as essentially the second attempt at the same person (or conversely the original as the failed first attempt) — but the movie pretty much ignores this issue.
My three questions are:
- does this specific case count as Doppelgänger Replacement Love Interest? I wanted to add that example to the trope but I wasn't sure if it counts.
- which trope is closest to a discussion of the philosophical problem I mentioned? Cloning Blues?
- do we actually have a trope along the lines of "crusading grieving parent"? We have a plenty of Determined Homesteader's Wife and Crusading Widower entries, but I'm not sure about children being the motivation for action. Closest other example I can think of is Lorenzo's Oil, but the titular character's parents might be simply written off as The Determinator.
openCharacter talking out loud to someone who's not there Film
I'm sure the trope already exists but that I only have vague, general words to describe it and I never managed to find it. It exists pretty much in all narrative fiction (tv, cinema, litterature, theater I guess...)
Character A walks home and starts talking out loud to Character B sight unseen, under the assumption that they are present. More often than not, it turns out Character B is not there (kidnapped, decided to leave, etc.) or physically unable to respond (dead, silenced...) but it takes time for Character A to realize that, and they just carry on the conversation all alone, blissfully unaware... It often leads to a dramatic reveal, when Character A starts saying "Character B? Character B?", opens a door, and, OH, Character B not here!
openBack to things as usual Film
Usually this happens to a regular joe schmoe, he's called to duty for a task/adventure that his far beyond anything he could ever imagine, and when its all done and everybody's happy...he goes back to his usual day tasks/job, almost like it didn't happen and resumes his normal life as usual.
Bonus points if that stinger happens right before the screen cuts to black and the credits role
resolved Orson Welles making frozen pea commercials Film
Is there a trope, in-universer or out, for accomplished creators/athletes/performers whose careers drop to comically humiliating lows, thanks to a perceived decrease in skill, abrasive personality, offscreen antics (including legal troubles) or a refusal to compromise their ethical values?
A more extreme version would be an actor being reduced to making porn.
Edited by Mac_RopenIndecisive setting? Film
Is there a trope for where a work can't decide whether it's going to be Darker and Edgier or Lighter and Softer (perhaps a superhero movie or a Non-Serial Movie Dragon Ball Z spin-off), but makes a compromise between the two and it doesn't really work?
Audience-Alienating Premise won't fit since the work's genre is popular, it's more about content.
openSinging in cars Film
This has to be a common trope, yet I can't seem to find any such topic. I'm basically looking people singing together in cars. We've all seen it a million times. Help?
openBad comedy is the worst Film
I've noticed a lot of people who review bad movies say bad comedies are the worst, the reasoning being that a bad action/horror/drama whatever might still be entertaining, if not in the intended way, where as a bad comedy is either just boring or irritating. Is there a trope for this.
openPrisoner with a pet? Film
Birdman of Alcatraz would be the Trope Maker. A prisoner who keeps a pet, like a bird or a mouse.
Edited by randomsurferopenPlan 9/Wakanda/Burton!Oompa Loompa salute Film
That salute where someone crosses their arms over their chest. Is that already a trope? Are there even enough examples for it to qualify for tropehood?
open"Now I'm pissed" Film
Normally during the final climactic/fight scene of a movie. Main character witnesses someone close to them die, proceeds to gain some rage fueled super strength and kill a ton of villains. Usually accompanied by slow motion and orchestra music swelling.
openBig Bad is member of minority group Film
If the heroes are fighting Orcs, for instance, and they find out the Big Bad leading the orcs is actually a human - or, the orcs usually have a class system and the Big Bad is a member of the lowest class.
Edited by Mac_RopenWild Kids Film
It's not a film but a tv show series, i watched it whenever i caught it on tv after school around 10 years ago or so. I think it's German show, and it's about groups of kids who live in wild by themselves and if i remember correctly they play football xD... Also i think there are vampires in one of the groups... Nostalgia hit me so hard and i just remembered. I appreciate the help.
