So, I only got the idea to blog this a while in. As a result, this first bit is... foggy. It probably didn't even happen in the order I describe it.

Things that happened before I started blogging:

First, I embarked. I forget exactly what I brought on the journey, but I made sure to bring a variety of booze, and set out for a volcano with a river running nearby. And all my dwarves were named after what I intended to be their jobs:

Nish Odlitast, Excavator, was in charge of carving the fortress from the mountain and smoothing walls/floors.
Sakzul Nillisat, Stone Guy, was to aid Nish in carving out the fortress and use the stone to make various things.
Tobul Shedbesmar, Bartender, was to make the all-important booze. As I had brought a spare pick, I also let him do some digging.
Ral Rametur, Wood Guy, was in charge of chopping down trees and building wooden things.
Dodok Tiristgusgah, Hunter, was to take the dogs out for our meat. He would also butcher any tame animals we needed to eat.
Besmar Lokumurvad, Farmer, was to tend our plump helmet fields.
And Olon Inodamug, Fearless Leader, was to... uh, lead. I got nothing on what that actually entails, so I just gave him a bunch of social skills.

I have a tendancy to specialize my dorfs and forget what I had them doing — this would make my life easier.

The group was named "The Joy of Failure", because losing is fun, and the fortress was named "The Forever-Fortress of Lies", because Forever-Fortress sounds cool, but there is no way the fortress will actually last forever.

I found a magma pipe while carving what was supposed to be the farm. I... I don't actually know what to do with magma. I just know it's considered essential...

I carved out various necessities and built a wall to protect them. It was at this point that it occurred to me that my farm might need water, so I looked for that river...

... and found it 4 z-levels down. Inconvenient, but nothing a few stairs won't fix. At least it's accessible at all.

At this point, I prepared to have Stone Guy build some beds, as I had completely failed to find any trees nearby enough to bother with.

But apparently, you can't make beds out of stone. Fine. I'll go get some damn wood. Keep searching...

... This area doesn't have any trees. None. Wood Guy's entire role is impossible.

Fu--

what. okay. i know i was about to curse a second ago but i think this situation merits it a bit more: FUCK. And I even know why this happened.

What I Wanted To Do
I don't know why I wanted the dump to be a z-level below the main fort. Just felt like it, I guess.

What Actually Happened
As you can guess, I failed to do anything about the area occupying what was supposed to be "empty air". Once the last square was excavated, BAM cave-in. Okay. Fine. It sucks, but I can deal with it. Tobul's duties were assigned to other dorfs, and I had Stone Guy start building a coffin.

... And that's about where we are. Nish had started smoothing the walls somewhere in there and... yeah, I'm kind of lost with this game. Any suggestions?

OH ALSO: according to various files, I'm not actually playing 40d, but a version slightly older than that. I'll try to update, but it will probably fail horribly (the very next update mentions things about how it breaks old saves so bleh).

I don't even know how I got 38c. =/

I'm reminded about a saying involving 'best-laid plans', but I can't recall the whole thing. Regardless, it looks like you've got one messy, lava-filled situation to deal with. Best of luck to you!

Well, the update went off without a hitch. Lots of wiki-ing has taught me about magma smelters, which I'm guessing are the primary reason magma is so awesome. The wiki left one vital detail a little ambiguous, but there were only two interpretations, and the game won't even let me try one, so the correct answer is obvious enough.

So. One magma forge coming right up.

That coffin got finished. Dunno how to make them bury Bartender, so he's still pretty much just sitting there.

Along with... withered plump helmets? My food is going bad?

... Right. Shit. I haven't made a stockpile yet.

That room on the left is the kitchen. In the middle is the still. And on the right, not yet carved into existence, is the pantry. It occurs to me that Farmer will be doing all the brewing and cooking for a while, so I rename him to Food Dood.

... I forget what the room below the kitchen is for.

Hey, the forge is done! And I know it's working, because it automagically queues up the pipe section I threw into the job manager last session.

... Wait, I don't think I need that. Cancel'd!

I try to build some trap components, but the only metal I've found on this map yet is aluminum, which is apparently too flimsy for traps. Oh well. I'll find something else.

It's at this point that I notice some of the magma pipe walls use a different character. I chec'k' it out...

Alunite... Is that metal or stone? I don't know, and I can't check right now... wish I had a geology textbook.

It's too close to the magma pipe to risk digging it out just to see. I'll leave it alone for now.

Oh. I mentioned aluminum. I struck it last session and forgot to say anything.

I actually found it while digging a path from inside my fort to my "outdoor" farm. Turns out I don't actually need an outdoor farm, as there are no plants worth gathering on this map, but I didn't know how to make mud yet. It's also not technically outdoors due to the land above it still existing. Which is probably a good thing, since I just decided to plant plump helmets there, which I think can't grow outdoors.

Back to aluminum: I'm mining it out now. Not great stuff, but it'll do for now.

Ah! The pantry is finally mined out!

I immediately set it to be a food stockpile. This... should help... I guess.

Dodok cancels Forge Aluminum Pipe Section: Needs 3 Aluminum Bars. ... I swear I cancelled that: don't need the damn pipe.

Speaking of the forge, I don't have a metal stockpile yet. I just toss one next to the forge... but away from the magma. Yeah, I'm a bit paranoid about things falling into the lava. And by "things" I mean "dorfs".

Dodok cancels Forge Aluminum Pipe Section. Again. Damn it. The job's still in the job manager, isn't it? Removed.

And it's naptime. Everyone just kind of plops down where they are, because I still have no damn beds.

... That aluminum isn't being smelted. Why? ... Evidently, the forge doesn't smelt. Searching the workshop list, I find a magma smelter, which I suspect will be more effective.

Besmar cancels Extract from Plants: Needs unrotten extract-bearing plants. I guess that doesn't include plump helmets. This is actually a good thing — I know helmets can be used to make booze, this means there's no intermediate step to worry about. I set the still to repeat brew — presumably this will go until Food Dood runs out of helmets or energy. While I'm here, I set the kitchen to repeatedly prepare easy meals. Mmm, winecake.

Smelter's done. I set it to repeat smelting ore — presumably this will stop when I run out. If not, I'll get cancelspam and know to remove it myself. Yay!

... Stone Guy is still jobless. Guess I'll let him help detail the walls and floors.

Fearless Leader is still slacking off too much. Maybe I should make him the fortress accountant. Give him something. ... Bookkeeping doesn't seem to be a labor. Guess I'll just build an office and... figure it out... Wait, no, it's under 'n'obles.

Turns out? Fearless Leader isn't actually the group leader. Hunter is. With no way to change that... I don't care.

Looking at my dorf's thoughts, I find that they all complain about the lack of chairs. Well. Can't have that. Open 'j'ob list, job 'm'anager, 'q'ueue new order, C H A I R... Wooden. The only kind of chair I can build is a wooden one. No chairs for dorfs. They'll be lucky to get beds before winter...

I ... think... I remember what the room below the kitchen was for: storing finished meals. So, one stockpile coming up.

Ral cancels Store Item in Stockpile: Job item misplaced. I... do not know what that means. If I had to guess, he lost the thing he was trying to store, possibly because he went on break mid-storing and some other dorf moved it while he wasn't looking.

Stone Guy is more experienced. Yay for Stone Guy!

... My magma forge doesn't seem to be working. I don't think it's getting the magma it needs. Disassemble and rebuild.

Dodok cancels smelt native aluminum ore: needs ore. That's that, then. The ore I struck was just a pocket of metal — it's all tapped out now.

The fortress attracted no migrants this season. Damn. I needed those extra hands.

Food Dood and Wood Guy are more experienced. Yay for them!

The magma forge is disassembled. Knowing where the necessary lava needs to be, I attempt to place it... and can't. Damn it. Well, it should be safe to channel the magma out one square...

... I expected something to go horribly wrong just there. It didn't. I have Hunter make a bin.

Fearless Leader's office is done. Update those records, bitch.

... Remember when I said "something didn't go horribly wrong"? Yeah, Hunter cancels Construct Bin: interrupted by Fire Imp. ... Which isn't something going horribly wrong at all, the imp is dispatched swiftly by a hail of thrown rocks. Leaving your stuff strewn all over the floor saves the day once again! After that... it's naptime, apparently.

Stone Guy is... putting the aluminum back in the stockpile? Kind of dumb, the bin job is still queued. Oh well.

Wood Guy is being more useful, by putting the imp gibs in the dump where they belong.

One of my dogs is in need of medical attention. ...I don't know how to deal with that. Someone (probably Hunter) is assigned to Animal Care... I guess he'll take care of it on his own?

Fearless Leader is wandering down to the river to drink... I hope this doesn't go horribly wrong. Which it totally could.

Also: while excavating an area to place some kennels, I struck cinnabar! I don't know what that is, but it sounds like a good thing.

Bin's done. Moved it over to the stone stockpile, but I don't know how to make the dorfs fill it.

... For some reason, Fearless Leader went almost all the way to the edge of the map. Does he have any idea how much river he had to walk by to get there? What's so great about that spot?

It occurs to me that if Fearless Leader had to drink water, it can only mean that we're out of booze. The Unit List says that Wood Guy is idle, so I assign him to brewing. Dunno why Food Dood isn't brewing but whatever.

One of the dogs gave birth to puppies! <3 Good timing on that kennel.

I still don't know how to get Hunter to patch up the dog.

cin-na-bar: noun. 1. mercuric sulfide, Hg S, a heavy, bright-red mineral, the principal ore of mercury. 2. artificial mercuric sulfide, used as red pigment. 3. brilliant red; vermillion.

...At least, that's what the dictionary says. And all this time, I thought it was just the name of the island Gym Leader Blaine lived on. Good to see that things are proceeding smoothly, even without things like wood. Keep it up!

Whoo, wiki-ing. I know how to make Hunter heal a hound. All I have to do is give him the Animal Care labor! ... Which he has already! ... What the crap more does he want from me?

Food Dood sure is walking a lot to get seeds. They're all in the food stockpile... New stock! Seeds go next to the farm, and NOT next to the kitchen.

Autumn has come. Fat lot of good that does me, no trees... Hey, you know what's fun? Exploratory mining!

I dig a pillar of staircases 19 z-levels tall, just to see what I find.

Also: I designated a water source and a fishing area. The big one is for fishing, the little one is water. Don't want my insanely dedicated fisherdwarf to leave corpses upstream of the drinking zone.

Hm, maybe I should channel the brook through my fort, make an indoor well... Of course, I'll need a bucket for that, and I'm fresh out of metal. Oh well, that's what exploratory mining is for!

Oooh, copper! It's metal! It's useful! Yay!

So, do I have a trade depot? No? Guess it's time to build one.

Damn it! The depot is finished approximately ten seconds later. TEN SECONDS TOO LATE, GUYS. At least the liaison stopped by to say hello.

... And then they showed up anyway? I guess they heard me shouting "GUYS COME BACK THERE'S A DEPOT NOW!"

I request seeds, booze, and wood. They request... cheese, ashes, and hats. Okay then... I'll get right on that...

Meanwhile, I've told Fearless Leader to get to trading, but HE WON'T LEAVE HIS OFFICE. ass. Fine. Let someone else do it. jerk. Unfortunately, it seems "someone else" (in this case Hunter, the actual leader and only dwarf who seems to do any LEADING around here) isn't good enough at appraising to know what any of the stuff is worth. At a guess, I trade a block for three logs. Not good enough. I throw a coffer into the bargain, which is apparently acceptable.

I have struck orpiment! ... There's no way I'm getting at that stuff, because it's in my aqueduct! Oh well! It's just stone! Exclamation points!

While Hunter (apparently the only guy who does anything around here) is smelting some of that copper ore and making the resulting bars into a bucket and chain for my well...

Yay! More hands! We've got a glassmaker, a fisherdwarf, a planter, a peasant, another peasant, an animal dissector, another peasant, a trapper, another peasant, and a woodcrafter. The first thing I do is assign one of the peasants the Mechanics labor. He's building mechanisms. All of them. Forever.

... Does this map have any sand?

And a hunting dog died of being on fire. Great. Where's the oh it's another fire imp. That shouldn't take much to WHOA!

I missed it, so no screenshot, but the thing just spewed a bunch of fire at the other dog, killing it. He's going to have to suffer for that. I assign Wood Guy to the military (because he has an axe) and send him to oh crap he died.

This Is Gonna Suck. I assign the nearest dwarves to the same squad, then hope they can rip the imp apart or something.

That works... Well, on the bright side, having lost both his dogs, Wood Guy was probably going to start a tantrum spiral and kill the whole fort. So, instead of a that, the fort suffers a single tragic loss.

In order to prevent such things in future (or at least deal with them faster) I have some swords made and organize a squad to use them. I don't actually activate them yet, though.

Winter is upon us. While mining out some space for bedrooms (i finally have those beds!) I strike native copper. Yay, metal! And it's closer to where I am! And—

... Well, this is just fun. Three of my military dwarves die taking him down.

See all those down arrows? Those are dwarves that are miserable due to Hunter's shenanigans.

Not even a year in, and I've suffered six casualties, nine if you count dogs. I think it's time to abandon this fort.

Things to remember for next time:

  • Make sure to have wood. A decent bed might have kept Hunter sane.
  • Bring a variety of plant seeds so you can make a variety of booze. Might have kept Hunter sane!
  • Don't build so close to magma. Nasty things live in it.

So, any suggestions for my next embark? Anyone want me to name a dorf after them or something?

I would suggest upgrading to the latest version, as you have more "fun" things. Oh and in case you didn't figure it out, you can make stone "thrones" that work as chairs. Bit strange that they call them thrones in one area and chairs in the other. But they are the same thing.

I tried DF2010. It doesn't run well on this computer. =/ I also know about the thrones now. I wasn't sure whether they were actually a different thing or what but the wiki implies they are identical.

Anyway new fort. The new fort is called Doomedfortress, because it is. I used the site finder to find a site with a magma pipe, an underground river, and some other features I can't remember. Conveniently, it also has a few trees for me to harvest if I have to. Which we all know I will.

So I take a quick look around. Those trees are 22 z-levels down from my wagon. How very inconvenient. My only visible water source is a bunch of murky pools (best find that underground river soon!), and there is a metric assload of stone. At least I know I'll never run short on that...

I want to send my dorfs down to the trees and start my fort there, but... Eh, whatever, I'll do it anyway. What Could Possibly Go Wrong?? The very first thing I do is order them to drag all the wood down there, to see if they can make it alive.

... That was uneventful. Okay, move everything else! Booze, seeds, metal, the lot of it! And chop down the trees that are in the temporary stockpile that I only set up to get everything off the top of the mountain! Disassemble the wagon! Do a bunch of other stuff!

With that accomplished, I then order then to dig out that pansy soil around the base of this mountain. And we're not stopping till we hit some good hard stone! And you without the pick! Take this axe instead and chop down all the trees in front of our soon-to-be fort's soon-to-be entrance!

Hm, a bit of an irregular shape... Ah, well. Next, a nice big entrance hall.

Actually, there will be some dwarven farms in front of the entrance hall, because that way I won't have to worry about drowning my dorfs or something in my feeble attempts at irrigation. And while I'm here, why not give the leader/broker and farmer rooms near their designated working areas? The leader's of course, will be carved out of microcline, the best mineral ever. He'll also get a garnierite door, because hey, bright green door.

As the leader eagerly awaits his room, everyone falls asleep. Insolent fools! How dare you delay the construction of our glorious leader's sleeping quarters!? Oh well. None of you have beds yet. Punishment enough, I suppose.

Soon the leader's room is done and the entrance hall is... Well, going. I plot the farms out, but don't expect them to actually be made for, like, ever, what with everyone still carving that huge-ass room.

I say that, but somehow, one of them gets finished anyway. Plump helmets year round there.

Our glorious leader, having nothing better to do, is assigned to smooth the walls and floors in his room.

Another plot finished. Cave wheat there, except when cave wheat won't grow. Then plump helmets.

It is now summer. And naptime.

Farm plot three finished. Pig tails. Which also won't grow year round. Guess what mushroom named after head armor gets planted when pig tails won't grow?

The huge room is about half done. I need the free hands more than I need the whole room, so I cancel a line of the mine designation, making them stop.

Fourth plot is done. Sweet pods go there. Sometimes. I don't think I need to say what goes there the rest of the time...

After a ridiculous amount of trying to micromanage my dorfs to build a door out of that garnierite, I come up with a much easier solution. yay.

The murky pools have evaporated. Dangit.

The leader's room is smoothed. He now gets to engrave it.

Well, summer was uneventful. Autumn has arrived.

... Not a lot of images this post, were there?

Nothing? Nobody? Hm. Well, anyway, more dorfing.

Last update, I forgot to give a dorfen roster like my first update. We need to know the names of these original seven dorfs, otherwise we can't spoil them unnecessarily!

We have Lokum Kolrubal, Army CO, who will... army. So far, he hasn't had a whole lot to do. I assigned him the Bookkeeping duty, hoping for the Badass Bookworm effect.
There's Imush Koganbardum, Carpenter. He carpents.
Logem Tiristudesh, Farmer, is a farmer.
Vucar Alathakil, Mason, is gonna have a lot of material to work with.
Kadol Olinlek, Fisherdwarf, has been doing NOTHING since the murky pools dried out. sadface.
Zulban Astmorul, Lunberjack, has been busy clear-cutting the area in front of my entrance, largely because he can.
And Aban Inethgeb, Leader, who only got that job because I knew giving him broker skills would make the game choose him for leadership. He's also been engraving, mainly to stave off boredom.

I examine the fort and immediately realize I have no idea what I'm doing. -facepalm- Okay. Quick check. First, the basics. Take care of physical needs. Food, booze, sleep? All accounted for. Can I make more? Beds, yes. Food, yes. Booze, NO. Let's do that. (and build a kitchen while i'm at it, raw plump helmets are not very delicious.)

A few quick redesignations and I have plans for a kitchen, a still, and a stockpile room. Let the digging commence.

I am confuse. Why are dwarves storing things in stockpiles instad of digging? I removed the stockpile at that locatio— wait. Right. I had a multi-level storage basement dug out next to the carpenter's workshop. They're moving trees there from the original stockpile.

And when I say "I had it dug out" I mean "I told them to dig it out", which evidently they have not finished as they strike shinies while expanding it further.

Hey, a caravan! ... I don't have anything worth trading! Oh well! And I can't think of anything to request! Also oh well! They can think of things to request, though. Prepared meals and spears. We'll get on that, I guess. Well, the spears. And the food, too, but we'll probably be keeping that for ourselves.

Food area is dug out. Kitchen, still, stocks, all ordered. Just gotta wait for them to be finished...

Caravan left. Not that I care. Maybe next year, all right guys?

ohey. you know what a bookkeeper needs? an office. get on that digging doods.

Hey, migrants! Arriving from what is quite possibly the best possible direction, even! Those extra hands sure will come in useful. Eight new dorfs arrive: a miner, a stoneworker, a metalsmith, a clothier, a fish dissector, a dyer, and two peasants.

I'm just curious why you are making such large rooms. Admittedly large rooms can look impressive if you plan things out in advance, but you don't seem to have many defenses in front of that large room. Seems to me that it'll be a place many a goblin comes to die (hopefuly it is the goblin's that die and not your dwarfs)

To be honest, I don't really know what I'm doing with my large rooms. They just look impressive, I guess. As for defenses, I have plans for a moat in front of the entrance here, but no way to actually make it yet. (read: no source of water or magma) I am clearing out the trees in that area, so I can channel it out when the time comes.

My idea for the fortress bitch is to assign him every labor. No way that can go horribly wrong, no sirree!

Since I'm bored, let's do some exploratory mining. Those lines extend all the way to the edges of the map, in case you're wondering.

GOD DAMN IT. Can this fortress go five minutes without someone leaving shit lying around and causing a cloud of miasma? Apparently the culprit is a prepared meal that never got stored away. How that even happened, I have no goddamn clue.

Winter is upon us.

Even the cats can't throw away their crap! A pile of roach remains is spewing forth another ungodly cloud of miasma. Right next to the kitchen! It's like we just can't keep that area clean!

I have a cage now, to stuff all my cats into (I'd rather not deal with a catsplosion if I can avoid it), but for some reason, the cats aren't on the list when I try to assign them. Huh. The wiki doesn't say anything about unusual cat/cage interactions...

I designate everything everywhere to be smoothed. Because I can.

Then it starts raining. Yay, filling up the pools!

The fortress bitch's current job is "return kill". Return what kill? What did he kill? ... Oh I see. It's not his kill, he just knew there was a dead mountain goat somewhere on the map and brought it back... to the refuse stockpile. A fitting job for the fortress bitch, bringing a dead goat halfway across the map for no reason.

Shiny! And then I struck another vein of shiny! Yay lots of shinies!

Oh! That's why! All the cats have adopted a dorf. You can't cage them after that. Well, the cage will be more useful once some more kittens are born.

Well anyway, the mining's almost done, so I designate another floor of exploration. Basically the same thing, but one Z-level lower! And it's all set up so I can repeat this until I run out of Z-levels.

Actually, now that I think about it, an empty moat might still be a decent defense. Too bad all those trees are still in the way. reminder: channel something out and build a drawbridge.

Those idling migrants are annoying. Get smoothing!

And it's annoying that my designated mason isn't masoning. I disable his stone and wood hauling because apparently that's all anyone does around this fort and he gets to work doing some actual useful stuff.

Also, it's winter, so the murky ponds are iced over. That makes this the perfect time to attempt something incredibly dangerous and therefore Fun. I am going to attempt to channel one or more of the ponds under the main entrance hall to make a well.

This takes forever and I get bored of waiting for it. In the meantime I build kennels, butcher shops, mechanics shops... a bunch of stuff.

I don't recall winter ending— and the announcement history bears me out on that— but the ponds have thawed. Oh well. Next year. I've got booze until then. Hell, I might even be able to do it in summer.

I'm told there is nothing to catch in the southern swamps. Darn. I know I saw a few turtles there when I first arrived.

Not a lot is happening guys.

Whooooooo let us dorf it up some more

Shortly after I load up my save, spring arrives. Told you winter hadn't ended.

I check the stocks screen and apparently I have loads and loads of seeds. More farm plots!

Did I mention that I'm finally mining out the rest of that huge-ass room I designated a while back? Cause I am.

... And not much else. This is taking forever, man.

WHOO an elven caravan has arrived! Something to do!

I don't have a whole lot in the way of !wood to give them, though. A jillion stone blocks and that's about it. oh well that is still worth a little bit of something i guess

While I'm waiting for that whole hauling thing to finish I am alerted that OMFGTHIEF!!! Right in the middle of the booze stocks! This Is Unforgivable!! I immediately activate the nearest dwarf... who is the army guy. hahahayouaresodead

He chases the thief out of the fortress... and then stops? bah you suck. oh well he didn't take anything anyway

HAY some migrants cool. We got a hunter, a peasant, an armorer, a fishery guy (seriously?), a miner, another peasant, a soapmaker, a thresher, a cook, a clothier, a milker, an animal trainer, an herbalist, a cheese maker, a gem cutter, another peasant, an animal caretaker, and another stupid-ass fish dissector moron.

Fishguys become bitches. That's what they get for being idiots. (e.e)9

Come to think of it, the milker and cheesemaker probably won't have a lot to do, given that I haven't found any purring maggots yet.

Gonna need more beds. Gonna need a bigger bedroom... Expand that out a bit.
