It just means this thread isn't broad enough.

Arakawa says "Men should be buff! Women should be vavoom!" I say "Ain't nothing wrong with that, so long as you don't actively diss other types." What say y'all?

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

As in FMA, Silver Spoon, etc?

I say personal preference. I prefer something more normal for both.

I'd say it should fit the tone of the story. Understated realistic tales fit realistic people. Epic spectacles fit epic spectacular bodies. And there's still a lot of room for variety.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

[up][up][up]In Arakawa's mind, that's what healthy people should look like. She doesn't like (drawing) skinny people.

To be fair, some Japanese shows go way too extreme with the skinny. Remember Free!?

I think overall anime and manga styles are too skinny, so I can get behind that. Too buff is probably better than too skinny, if I had to pick. Anime has a more important factor, though: Movement. Then again, I find most anime to be kind of bad at certain types movements. Especially running.

When it comes down to what someone likes to draw, then it's usually better to draw what you like. I often find that I like something more if it's not a style I like, but something the artist likes to draw compared to if it's a style I like but the artist doesn't like it and draws it just because of other forces. Then again, most of the time it's hard to realise what the artist actually likes, so it's something that comes on top with knowledge, I suppose.

I now think of Cuphead and all its anime(!) influences. I wish more anime were this animated.

Alex Armstrong and Gluttony are the only Arakawa character to have unrealistic physique.

Didn't CLAMP/whoever did the designs for Code Geass define overly skinny designs in anime?

To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."

.... Has any one else noticed the fact there has been less genderrole diversity in the last few seasons?

If its action/adventure, it stars a male lead, if its cute it has a female lead.

I mean sure that has always been a trend, but you also had exceptions like GITS, Escaflowne.... even Inuyasha.... to name big ones I am pretty sure people would know.

But the exceptions seem to have vanished compleatly.

Anime in general has felt more homogenous lately. Especially once isekai web novels became a big source for adaptations. The stuff that actually pops out is usually adaptions of popular manga.

Okay, I knew Kino was a thing, some how forgot about that but I could have sworn Houseki no Kuni was next season.

Also 2 of those are male leads in action anime, not a divergence, and a further two are Nanoha, which while a good series has been running for years and is not indicative of tends.

Even looking at what remains, something seems..... off compared to what we had in the past and I don't know where to point my finger at it..... I kind of want to agree with the previous posters that everything is feeling samey any more...... looking at the ones that buck trends, the vast majority of them are remakes(Kino) or continuations(Nanoha)....

Her comment is pretty harmless.

Anime in general has felt more homogenous lately.

Anime's been feeling homogenous since SAO came out and light novel adaptions became popular.

Define homogenous

The only reason people think that is because they don't pay attention to comedy shrots that are nothing like normal anime.

Anime is more gobal if anything, not Homogenous, as I said before.

Technically, Mukokusei is technically homogenous in itself.

Noodle People is the skinny people in anime trope that I think people are looking for, its meant to make people look more regal and primarially used in Shōjo and especially Yaoi works like Free.

But also do not forget Puni Plush its polar opposite with its chubby and rounded designs that makes people look younger to some people's eyes, its also known as Moe Art style. Its also used to make guys look more girly.

I thought that anime was about a male swimming team.

[up]It is. It has tons of purposeful Ho Yay to tease the Yaoi Fangirl audience, but it's not a yaoi by any means. It also doesn't have characters that are particularly skinny, especially compared to other Kyo Ani works or works that exaggerate the style like CLAMP's, so I'm kind of confused about why it's the example for Noodle People.

I find that Puni Plush mostly just means rounded faces, while the body type is still closer to anime standard. Makes proportions a bit weird.

[up]Hands as well are smaller and a little chubbier. Noodle people have huge and excessively detailed hands.

Bodies are also curvier but not usually extremely so cause fanservice, they look about 3 feet shorter than noodle people.

[up][up][up]I showed it to my normie girl friends expecting them to like the Fanservice. Nope. They were disgusted by the "anorexic" characters' bodies.

They're not skinny, but they basically have zero body fat over Bruce-lee level tight muscle.
