Relevant TRS thread. There also was discussion earlier in this thread concluding that the trope isn't Trivia.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanReally? The discussion on whether or not the trope was a Trivia wasn't really touched upon (it's more of cleaning description and examples).
Unless I'm misinterpreting what Trivia is, I really don't see how Shout Outs have narrative significance to a storyline. If a character, say, wears a T-Shirt with a Kirby picture, it will serve as an easter egg to those who knows Kirby, but narrative-wise, it has no purpose, and nothing will really change if he were wearing a plain shirt.
I think you might be misinterpreting what tropes are. Tropes don't really need "narrative significance" or be important for the plot/story.
Shout Outs are actively used within works to impact how people enjoy them. They're tropes, just like Easter Eggs.
Saying nothing would change if a character had a white T-shirt instead of a Kirby T-shirt is false. The character's shirt would change. If you say nothing fundamental would change then you can probably apply the same argument to a lot of other tropes, since there are a lot of tropes that don't really affect much outside themselves.
Check out my fanfiction!Right, trivia "tropes" are ones that you can not discern from looking at the media. O can watch a movie and see the Shout-Out. I can't see from watching a movie what's Enforced Method Acting.
My alignment is Chaotic Cute.I've recently launched Spoiled by the Merchandise. I'm eager to start crosswicking, but I'm pretty sure examples should go on the respective works' Trivia pages, and the Trivia index page encouraged me to discuss this here before adding anything to that index.
I propose Portmanteau Couple Name as trivia: it's a special case of Fan Nickname, which is already flagged as trivia.
I'm adding Recycled Set to the list, as it looks like a subtrope of Prop Recycling.
Urrrrgh... Could we hold off on making more nominations? The crowner's getting really backed up.
@1083: I disagree, partly because Portmanteau Couple Name is more in -line with other shipping tropes rather than Fan Nickname, and partly because I think the latter is more of an Audience Reaction than a trivia anyway.
Why?
Check out my fanfiction!I'm think Digital Destruction should be trivia, as there's no way to know it's an example by sitting down and comparing the two versions, and it's not something that happens within the piece.
My alignment is Chaotic Cute.I'm not even really sure it's a trope, but if it is, then it's trivia.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Is The Coconut Effect a trivia? It is defined as something unrealistic being included in the work because the audience thinks it's true. I suppose it's in a similar vein to Artistic Licence, though.

I'd say no. You can tell the trope exists when watching the show = not trivia.

My alignment is Chaotic Cute.I was thinking about moving California Doubling and Doubling for London to Trivia as they don't have any narrative role. It's a budget decision and is best done when unnoticed on-screen.
Speaking of Doubling for London, that trope name was originally a pun on "Dublin" in addition to California Doubling. As most people didn't get the pun despite the page's attempt to explain it, I added an Accent Depundent pothole in the lede.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool. Can I propose changing Role Reprisal to a Trivia trope? Most of the other tropes related to acting like The Other Darrin and Hey, It's That Guy! are classified as Trivia tropes, so I was wondering if Role Reprisal should be reclassified as a Trivia trope.
Personally, I'd prefer if the 'net was a little friendlier, but you know the GIFT...I'm proposing Dated History. Seems like a clear case of out-of-universe logic applied to a story.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Proposing LGBT Fanbase. There is nothing subjective about this that requires the use of the YMMV banner; it feels more like an interesting factoid that should be Trivia instead.
Proposing we wait on new entries until the current crowner is cleared out and a new one started.
Yep, this crowner is fairly long. Also, I have to wonder whether this classification program is attracting enough attention - I'd not be opposed to handing it over to TRS.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanPart of the problem with getting people to vote is the sheer size of the crowner — 89 entries is downright intimidating.
Crown Description:
The Trivia category is for narrative conventions that cannot be determined from the final product itself. These are details of production and behind-the-scenes events that influenced the end result of the product. This crowner is used in conjunction with this thread. Please post in the thread before adding tropes to this list. Previous crowner here. Make a new crowner after 40 tropes.
Proposing for Shout-Out, as the references are meaningless to people who doesn't know the other works/characters/creators it's referencing to, but that lack of knowledge is not detrimental to the audience's ability to enjoy the story.
