The description of Girl Powered defines it as "a magical artifact of unimaginable power" that "can only be used by a girl." The trope is 13 years old, but only has 20 wicks. It's quite possible that this is simply Too Rare to Trope.

I considered crosswicking to increase the number of wicks, but I saw a lot of misuse and zero-context examples on the page, so I did a Wick Check to see if there was just as much misuse in the wicks as on the page. It turns out that of the 20 wicks, only 6 are examples of Girl Powered in trope lists. Of those, only 2 have full context. (If the "unimaginable" part of "unimaginable power" is taken literally, then there are no correct examples of Girl Powered among the wicks.) At the same time, only 3 wicks were unambiguous misuse. The rest of the wicks didn't have enough context, mostly because they failed to mention that the artifact in question was magical, as opposed to verifying that the user was female through some sort of technology, like a biometric scanner. Many wicks mentioned Powered Armor, where technology might seem more likely. Some wicks also had enough context for the World of Action Girls trope.

It is, of course, worth asking if the description should simply be altered to remove the words "magical" and "unimaginable." However, I have to answer this question with a "no:" If this were done, the trope would become The Same, but More Specific for Gender-Restricted Ability, with that gender being "female" offering no additional tropeworthy value. (If you disagree, perhaps examples and wicks could be brought in from Gender-Restricted Ability to help this page thrive.)

Instead, my recommendation is to disambiguate Girl Powered between Gender-Restricted Ability, Powered Armor, and World of Action Girls. At a glance, many of the on-page examples would also fit one of these three tropes. As for Mana Takamiya, it seems like a lot of work was put into her Pantheon entries, and it would be a shame if they were all cut. Perhaps the Trope Pantheons Discussion could make her the goddess of one of these three tropes instead.

    Full-Context Examples (2/20)
1. Chained Soldier
  • Girl Powered: Only women can eat the Mato "peaches" that grant super-powers to fight back against the mindless beasts coming from that dimension, who seek to kill and eat all life on Earth.
2. SCP Foundation SC Ps 1800 To 1999

SCP-1954 - Helen Homemaker's Hints For The Harried Housewife

SCP-1954 is a 333 page hardcover book bearing the title "Helen Homemaker's Hints For The Harried Housewife". While inactive, the book appears to be a compendium of household management ideas, recipes, decorating ideas, arts and crafts instructions, party planning help, and other general homemaking tips. The first attempt at following the instructions, provided the instructions are followed exactly, always results in a successful product, while attempts to stray from the instructions will result in absolute failure. Upon subsequent uses of the book, the instructions are reported to become more out of the ordinary, gradually involving murder, cannibalization, sexual encounters, self-mutilation, and canned vegetables. At this point, the instructions designate methods to ensure a woman’s spouse's promotion, the death of a rival housewife, a child's placement in little league, personal acceptance into a country club, and other similar events.
  • Girl Powered: The book's magic rituals only work when performed by women.

    Partial-Context Examples (2/20)
1. Skullgirls: Main Characters (Is the Skull Heart a magical artifact? What kind of power is granted to a Skullgirl?)
  • Girl Powered: Only women can wish on the Skull Heart, and thus become Skullgirls.
2. Red Sonja (What is the McGuffin in this movie? Is it a magical artifact?)

    Zero-Context Examples (1/20)

    Examples with Other Problems (1/20)
1. Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure (seems like a subversion)
  • Girl Powered: The giant robots can only be piloted by girls until Kazuki comes along.

Full Context + Not an Example (1/20)
1. Simoun
In the world of Daikuuriku, everyone is born female, and chooses which sex they wish to become at age 17 with a trip to a magical spring. In this world, the peaceful theocracy of Simulacrum is guarded by magical flying machines called "Simoun," which can only be piloted by young girls who haven't chosen a sex yet.

Partial Context + Not an Example (9/20)
1. Power Harness 2. Anime & Manga 3. G to I 4. Infinite Stratos
Sometime in the future, a new exoskeleton called the Infinite Stratos (IS) system was developed in Japan and quickly demonstrated just how easily it could take out a variety of conventional military weapons. The weapon was soon adopted by several nations... save for one flaw — only women could pilot it. This shifted the social structure to favoring women over men, until Every Man Ichika Orimura becomes the first male to activate an IS and is soon thrust into a new life as a new student at the prestigious — and previously all-female — Infinite Stratos Academy.
5. Date A Live 6. GUAG Groups
7. Media Presentation
8. Other Weapon Tropes
Mana Takamiya, Goddess of Female-Powered Weaponry (Adeptus 2)
9. Power Levels and Appearance
Mana Takamiya, Goddess of Female-Powered Weaponry (Adeptus 2)

No Context + Not an Example (1/20)
1. Pages Needing Wicks
  • Girl-Powered (July 11, 2010)

Misuse + Not an Example (3/20)
1. Gender and Sexuality Tropes (a MacGuffin Snowclone without the Snowclone)
  • Girl-Powered: A MacGuffin that only works for girls.
2. Sliding Scale of Gender Inequality (no mention of a magical artifact, and Girl Powered says nothing about boys being unable to gain powers by other means) 3. Chickification (I am not a girl, yet I was able to visit the unabridged version)

Opened. I agree that this might be Too Rare to Trope, but it's The Same, but More Specific to Gender-Restricted Ability either way.

The inbound count is pretty low at 1,230 since 2012, despite the page being made in 2010, so doing a full-fledged cut is on the table, and I'm in favor of that.

Cut. Most of the legitimate examples seem redundant with Gender-Restricted Ability.

I don't think it's rare, I think it's just another name for Gender-Restricted Ability, so it can be merged with it.

Since this is wick-starved, we can go ahead and merge with Gender-Restricted Ability.
