Best Known for the Fanservice, according to its page, describes works to which the following applies: "This is the common tendency for fanservice to overshadow everything else about a work."

However, either the trope has drifted in scope or was overscoped from the beginning. First of all, it has the usual issue where any sexual content, innuendo, etc. is referred to as "fanservice" regardless of intent or circumstances. It also tends to collect overly horny writing like all other fanservice tropes.

The bigger problem, though, is that "best known" is used very loosely and often just means "known," or sometimes "known by this troper who is typing with one hand." What a work is "best known" for is inherently subjective and subject to Fan Myopia — an argument might be made that the trope should require citations to be less subjective — but a good litmus test might be: Assuming you've heard of the work, do you have any idea what the "best known" fanservice in question even is? If not, it probably isn't an example.

Wick check: Here. Restricted this to YMMV pages since anything else is likely to be a pothole or questionable usage of the trope in the first place. I split this into a few categories:

  • The definition that best matches the title and description: fanservice that is genuinely the best known thing about the work. This is not as common as the trope description would lead one to believe.
  • Fanservice that is well-known and/or iconic, but not the best known thing, or at least one well-known thing among many.
  • Fanservice was heavily played up during the promo of a work and may have been the best-known thing before it came out.
  • Fanservice exists, but does not overshadow the rest of the work. In the wick check this is by far the largest category. Often accompanied by the phrase "Some people remember..." or similar.
  • Fanservice exists, does not overshadow the rest of the work, but This Troper is going to be horny about it on the page anyway.
  • Not an example/other.

Wick totals:

  • Risque content that is the best known element of the work: 9/50: 18%
  • Very well-known risque content but not the only well known aspect: 7/50: 14%
  • Fanservice exists but is not the best-known thing: 15/50: 30%
  • Was the best-known thing during promo/early on, no longer is: 5/50: 10%
  • "This character is hot"/one-handed troping": 10/50: 20%
  • Not an example at all: 1/50: 2%
  • Unclear/other: 3/50: 6%

Alrighty time for folder S-Z on video games

    S–Z
  • Shantae is a series of Metroidvania games with fun gameplay, a sense of humour that ranges from the oddball to the sardonic to the just-plain meta, and a rocking soundtrack. All that tends to be what makes fans stay though. How most people discover the series is by way of seeing others talking about or sharing fanart of the franchise's titular Belly Dancer protagonist and its supporting cast of equally adorable and sexy women clad in lovely Stripperiffic attire.
  • Skullgirls has a rather cool art style, a good story for a fighter, some interesting characters with personalities that shows they actually have more depth to them then just their looks, some even having a tragic past but still been an up beat inspiration and good role model, and is an overall fun and solid tournament fighter. But most people who haven't played the game for more then 10 minutes or at all often get stuck on its admittedly not so hidden fan service. Keep in mind said fan service is played for laughs and is only focused on for a few moments to deliver a punchline or two once in a while and then the game moves on and usually stays focused on the story for the most part — and later veers most of the fanservice into Fan Disservice.
  • This is the reason why Shadowverse was nicknamed Waifuverse at one point, by newcomers of the Card Game who immediately noticed the anime-inspired Fanservice of the characters and cards.
  • Why should you play Snatcher? You get to flirt with all the women! And there's nudity! And something about Communist robots taking over the world with Replicant Snatching, probably. Might as well play Policenauts for the same reason. You can flirt with every girl in the game; you can even grope them!
  • The Soul Series series is very much this. The fact it’s a fantasy fighting game where you use weapons and play as characters from different nationalities and cultures is all drowned out by the very busty Ivy who’s Dressed Like a Dominatrix, whom along other attractive female characters are arguably why the series is as popular as it is. The fact that 2B was added to roster in the sixth entry only helps this notion.
  • Street Fighter is the Trope Codifier of the Fighting Game genre, but barring the in-depth players most people when discussing the series will more likely talk about how droolingly sexy a lot of the characters (both female and male) are. Chun-Li and Cammy are great characters who are very strong and have great combo gameplay, but they’re much more recognised for having curvaceous physiques worthy of Venus and having attire that best displays their T and A. It’s more than likely Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie played a big part in turning Chun-Li in particular into a sex icon in the franchise going forward. This focus on fanservice over in-canon skill is also sadly why both Chun-Li and Cammy got a a good deal of Badass Decay, as Capcom put more emphasis on their sexiness and wardrobe rather than their Action Girl abilities. As mentioned before though, this applies the male characters as well e.g the conversation about Ryu is more commonly about how devastatingly sexy he is with a beard or the fact you can see his dick print in the trailer for SF6 rather than anything to do with his character.
  • There are some people who have never even played Star Fox Adventures, yet almost everyone knows about Krystal, who mostly goes around in just a bra and a loincloth.
  • Tekken although iconic enough to be recognised on its own merits, the series is still nevertheless extremely popular thanks to super hottie female characters such as Nina, Anna, Christie, Asuka and Lili (particularly in Nina and Anna case it was simply due to the fact they were some the first women to be attractively rendered in CG doing the 3D games boom of the 90s). Nina, despite having no big importance in terms of the overall story of Tekken, got her own spin-off game Death by Degrees purely through the strength of her character i.e the strength of the tight spandex covering her curvaceous body.
  • Any and all discussion of TERA will be dominated by and centered around the rights of the female playable characters to wear Chainmail Bikinis, and whether or not people who play as Elins are pedophiles because they wear the same stuff that all the other females are wearing.
  • Time Gal: The most remembered thing about the game is the fact that it has a girl running around in a bikini for the whole game.
  • Tomb Raider: Lara Croft has huge guns - oh, and pistols, too. A lot of people play the game through on all difficulty levels and get all the trophies-just to unlock the bikini costumes, and to angle the camera to get the best view of Lara's ass and boobs. Subverted with the 2013 reboot and sequel due to her assets being toned down (while still remaining pretty big) in the game's overall more realistic art style.
  • Touhou Project is about a world of super-powered magical action girls (many of which are Cute Monster Girls who are Really 700 Years Old) who have interesting (but never romantic) relationships with each other, which can gives way to tons of fanart (cute, gorgeous or very risque) and awesome music. "Shoot em ups"? What's a "shoot 'em up"? note
  • Trauma Center: "Moving Heart" is one of Trauma Team's most infamous levels; it's a Diagnostics level, and you sometimes need to get your patients to lift up their shirts in order to listen with your stethoscope. In that particular level, your patient is an attractive woman with great cleavage that's even acknowledged In-Universe.
  • Wild Woody is an obscure title on the Sega CD that in present times is mostly remembered for an infamous topless mermaid easter egg hidden in one of the levels. It gets to the point that Let's Play videos and even Longplays tend to show it off just for the novelty/infamy.
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is an RPG with an incredibly complex combat system, massive open world, hundreds of sidequests that flesh out the details of the setting, and main plotline centered around an effort to save a dying world from a terrorist organization that's trying to recover an ancient superweapon. Ask someone with only passing knowledge of the game about it, and they'll probably reference the main female lead's Stripperiffic default costume or the fact that some of the optional blades have sexualized designs.
  • Ask someone what they know about Xenosaga. Most people will probably answer "It's the game where KOS-MOS is from" and next to nothing beyond that.

[up] This sounds like a discussion of fandom fetishes and not quite what this thread is for. We're checking if trope examples of Best Known for the Fanservice on-pages fit and are applicable.

I found something and I'm curious as to if it's a valid example of this, or at least if this trope can apply to "smaller circles" like fanart websites. Basically there's this fancomic on Deviantart that, as far as I can tell from skimming around, is almost completely worksafe and free of anything remotely fanservice-y. The exception is exactly one page where the heroine is shown naked (but censored). The artist said this is a one time thing and she won't draw more like that. The thing is, this page has way more attention than the rest of the comic, with over 25,000 views and 330 favorites — other pages as far as I can see tend to average out 900-2,000 views tops and around 10 favorites (though there is a minor spike for the pages leading up to and a little after the one with nudity, but even those don't come close). It's not a usual case of people discussing "I remember this for that one scene," but there is a visible metric showing that the one time the comic has nudity is far more popular than the rest of it, many people only seeing this and no other part.

If this is too obscure to tell, doesn't meet the requirements, or I overlooked something that doesn't match the data I presented, I'll understand, I just want a second opinion as to if this would fall under BKFTF or not before I add it as an example. If anyone needs more information/would like to see the comic themselves, it's a Pokémon fancomic called Trainer in PLATINUM. The page in question is in Chapter 2, it's behind a log in wall but no other page in the main comic is, and you don't need to be logged in to see the views/favorite stats.

Nurse Hitomi's Monster Infirmary feels like it shouldn't count, but I'm not familiar with the series so I think someone who is should weigh in on it. The description even says "Most notable is the copious amounts of Fanservice that come with the heartwarming moments and lessons taught by Hitomi", if that means anything.

Does being an eroge Visual Novel disqualify for this trope? Because I found this example of Best Known For The Fan Disservice in Wonderful Everyday Down The Rabbit Hole and it might be misuse.

  • Best Known for the Fanservice: For a good while, the game's infamously disturbing H-Scenes were easily one of the most well-known parts of the game. This has died down largely since the localization has come out, and bringing it up is a surefire way to anger fans.

Found this recently added entry on YMMV.Stellar Blade

Considering the shameless Sex Sells advertising the game has, I don't think it counts as the trope. It's worth noting that I deleted another example of this for that reason.

[up] Someone readded the same thing but with different phrasing... sigh.

It might turn into an edit war between this thread and the guys that didn't check the TRS decision.

Considering that SB keeps getting the trope added even though it doesn't fit, should we add this:

Please do not add a Best Known For The Fanservice entry on this page. The game is filled with Fanservice thanks the designs of its main character and the marketing and the trope is about Fanservice being a minor among everything else but is nonetheless talked about.
