Badass Beard is a trope about badass characters with beards. However, it attracts many zero-context examples that simply list a character's name or state that they have a beard without explaining how it is connected with being a badass. Some examples also state how a beard is impressive without explaining how the person with the beard is a badass. This may be because of an unclear trope description and/or name.

Bolded comments and potholes. Five wicks had both correct and ZCE/incorrect usage, hence why the total example count is actually 83, with 67 wicks checked.

  • Correct: 6/83 or 7%
  • Impressive Beard: 6/83 or 7%
  • ZCE: 59/83 or 71%
  • Potholes 12/83 or 14%

Wicks Checked: 67/67

    Correct Usage
  • Record of Grancrest War: Under Erik: Has a fittingly wild, white beard and is a formidable personal combatant.
  • Forum of Thrones - The North:
    • Under Ser Dag Umber: Unlike his brother's long and wild beard, his is shorter and well trimmed. He is nonetheless a knight and a member of House Umber, meaning he must be a beast in combat.
    • Under Mace Crowl: Has a wild beard, and can beat Prince Beren quite easily. Generally, even his critics seem to have nothing but respect, admiration or perhaps even fear for his skill.
  • Shining Force II: Under Creed: He has a beard and as a Greater Devil he can still fight, though he prefers not to these days.
  • The Fast and the Furious: The Team Under Vince: A bearded guy who can drive and fight right there along with Brian and Dom, especially in the fifth film.
  • Stargate Atlantis: Under Ronon Dex: The most physically competent of Sheppard's team, and he has some pretty nice facial hair.

    Impressive beard
  • Blood Ties (Naruto/Skyrim): Like any good Nord, Conrad has a magnificent beard. Without it, he looks just like Minato. And then he gets shaved...
  • MCU: Companies – Stark Industries: Under Happy Hogan: Sports a spiffy goatee in Avengers: Endgame. He calls it his "Blip beard" in Far From Home, since he grew it during the period between the Snap and the Blip.
  • Marvel Gems Universe Ultimate Alliance: Under Peter Parker/Spiderman: How Tony refers to him as an "Awesome Facial Hair Bro."
  • The Magic Pudding: Subverted with Uncle Wattleberry's "huge, fiery red" beard and moustache. While he is inexorbitantly proud of them, Bunyip Bluegum finds them a nuisance that, among other things, are always getting in the soup. They also get him mistaken for the pudding thieving wombat in disguise in one chapter.
  • Don't Starve: Playable Characters: Under Wilson: He'll eventually grow one after a few days, and it'll continue to grow until it becomes so thick that it covers his entire body when he's facing the screen. This Beard provides a LOT of insulation against cold and, if you want to cut it, provides beard hair, the rare ingredient for Meat Effigies.
  • Star vs. the Forces of Evil: Ludo's Forces: Under Ludo Avarius: He grows one over the course of "Ludo in the Wild", which becomes so long he ties it into three braids.

Since the cleanup threads that could cover this trope have both been stagnant for a while, I'll let this thread have a chance here.

I think this is too broad to be meaningful and is thus not tropeworthy, aside from narrower cases like Beard of Barbarism.

This line:

And when it does work, the gentleman in question is a bona fide tough guy, a man's man, a veritable buffet of manliness.

makes me think what it wants to be is Beard Of Masculinity, akin to Carpet of Virility. The kind of lush facial hair you'd expect to see on a Mighty Lumberjack.

[up]I agree. As a side note, "too broad to be meaningful" describes why a lot of Badass Tropes have been cut outright.

Also People Sit on Chairs. The description doesn't draw meaning from badass and beard together.

With 10000 inbounds, it can disambig to Badass Mustache, Hot Blooded Sideburns, Perma-Stubble

[up] I still want to check Badass Mustache to see if it has similar problems. The subtropes like Beard of Barbarism going on a disambig, I would support.

[up] Might be good to, though at least Mustache's description goes through why "mustache" can associated with "badass".

Disambiguate like its badass siblings. Split into new tropes if necessary.

I wouldn't mind a Masculine Beard trope. Or Masculine Facial Hair if we want to combine it with Badass Moustache.

Currently, they both seem like they'd cover the "facial hair is masculine" concept but also cover a much broader range, based on the fact that they're about the hair being "badass" in some way. It'd be a much narrower and more meaningful trope.

I performed a wick check on Badass Mustache to see how it compared to Badass Beard in terms of the problems.

Ok coming at this from a different angle... what about Flaunting The Beard? These badasses flaunt their beard in some way. Historically people like Guan Yu actually had Beard Bags that they put their beards in and only brought them out for formal occasions and such.

Or 'Warrior Long Beard'? Like a long beard is an absolutely stupid idea on a battlefield (as is long hair in general) but characters do it and treat it as a badge of honor, when it really is a sign of cockiness or stupidity.

[up][up]I'd be fine with merging Badass Mustache and Badass Beard (possibly into the Facial Hair Of Virility trope I suggested), now that we have wick checks for both.

Facial Hair Of Virility [tup]

Memers, your ideas seem potentially viable, but I've never seen examples of either. At least, not that I can remember. Feel free to attempt them in TLP though if you think they can exist.

Also, if we go with the Facial Hair Of Virility suggestion, we could have Mustache Of Virility, Moustache Of Virility, and Beard Of Virility as redirects (two of these involve the same word spelled two different ways).

So we could do both a disambig and a new combined trope? As in, we redirect Badass Beard and Badass Moustache to a disambig, and then if there are any good usable examples for a new trope if one gets agreed upon, we can move them to a draft in TLP?
