When I was a young kid, I watched several fantasy and science fiction shows. I always thought that magic and science could not exist together (in fiction) so when young me decided to imagine a world where science and magic exists together. Now I am revisiting this idea and making brand new stuff from the diaries I wrote.

Let us begin,

In the modern world of Atomis, everyone uses the Art - a type of force which is basically a combination of science and magic that allows wonderful and frightening abilities which can be explained to ordinary people.

Ordinary people use the Art for everyday purposes such as summoning familiars using smartphones for servants, keeping pet mythical creatures, using potions as fertilizers and other Art-related things.

The Art

What is the Art? The Art is a capability to use a type of energy which apparently violates normal laws of science but unable to be explained by magical means. In a simple terms, it's basically both Sufficiently Analyzed Magic and Clarke's Third Law in a way to easily explain it.

The Art allows Magitek devices and speculative things which boils down to magic influencing science and science altering magic. Ordinary people live their lives learning and using the Art to solve anything and give assistance with magical species explained by the Art.

Even a Muggle can use the Art in small ways to be honest. Most people have a genetic predisposition to be more advantageous to use certain fields of the Art.

Fields of the Art
  • Gematria: The field of using mathematics to utilize the power of numbers and conjectures to generate power to mainpulate or control magic-like powers.
  • Pharmakeia: The field of using drugs and substances to create potions for consumer and medical consumption.
  • Alchemistry: The field of transmutating chemicals using the scientific method.
  • Fabuzoology: The field of studying fantastic and mysterious creatures with speculative and fantastic powers.
  • Daemonology: The field of researching Daemonic creatures for technological purposes.

Urban Fantasy has taken off a LOT, so I'd say you can just look through the article and see if any of the works there catch your eye for inspiration.

Also take a look at Magitek.

Have magic and science combined in fields, or have they evolved separate-but-parallel functions? In my work Moonflowers, magic varies heavily in strength by region, so the whole plot hinges on my Asian-American family getting cursed by European fairies, then helped out by a Filipino deity who's completely unaffected by European magic... but thanks to the centuries of Spanish colonization, she's severely De Powered by both her lack of worshippers, and being an ocean away from her MAIN power bases.

So I have a basic "Magic A Is Magic A" situation, but it also allows for a LOT of fun with All Myths Are True.

[up] It's not Urban Fantasy, it's a world where science and magic are the same and they both exist together.

In this world, technology looks extremely magical to a boy from a scientific world while wizardry is extremely scientific to a girl from a magical world. In a way it's both Magic from Technology and Magitek as I know.

In my world I am intending to create, Sci Fi Ghetto is averted and the Speculative Fiction is a acceptable literary quality. Authors like Tolkein, Asimov, George R.R. Martin, Clarke and other writers are respected in the literary community.

Confused? In simple terms, it's a alternate history where magic and science are both same and they co-exist.

Now, let me tell you about the Art works according to young children in this world.

The Art relies on the Solar Luminosity of the Sun which fluctuates many times, sometimes the Art is strongest at Solar Luminosity 9 while the Art's power is weakest at Solar Luminosity 1.

The Art is what powers the universe and the technology in this world, which is capable of strange and wondrous abilities.

That's the most simplest explanation.

Technology in the Atomis

In Atomis, due to the fact science and magic exist together, technology and wizardry are the same thing. This is a non-exhaustive list of devices which people use.

  • Smartphones which function as grimoires and spellbooks. Those devices can summon Daemons as servants and allow teleportation within continental distances.
  • Cars enhanced with fuels altered by Alchemistry field of the Art, allowing non-harmful emissions to come from combustion of petroleum and ethanol.
  • Electricity generated in power stations from Lightning Elementals and Particle Reactors which utilize the Art.
  • Automatic pencils which write with precision and no errors in the writing due to the Art's effects on the pencil.

So I have one question, how do you create a system of magic and science co-existing from a source which is basically science and magic combined?

Well you have to develop some semblance of a Magic System plus is there are secluded communities of magic and science that are meeting for the first time while both are being treated as some sort of academic practice have the practitioners mirror each other with what is achieved with different methods of achieving it like a parallel of the alchemists making a solution of salamander or an equally fire associated material to light a stove compared to scientists having made our gas stoves with lighting mechanisms and gas.

...Bro, you think Tolkien and George RR Martin AREN'T respected in the literary world???

Tolkien is "the ultimate fantasy writer" and Martin is "the American Tolkien."

No I think what the dude's trying to say is that they want to avoid the pitfalls of writing in this genre like those writers who are respected.

Hmmm, what are you trying to talk about the Tolkein stuff, rerailing this thread.

Okay, the world of Atomis is threatened by an appearance of a demonic planet known as Judecca. Now, Art-users are trying to form a strike team made of many Art-users who specialize in many fields to destroy Judecca's core.

Now here is about warfare in Atomis

  • In most wars, the soldiers prefer to usage of swords and guns to be effective because the enchantments and the creation of special alloys done by Art-users can enhance the killing power of the said weapons.
  • Soldiers often carry disposable spells and grenades powered by the Art.
  • Art-users who are soldiers can use spells the cast out of their own Virtue supply and around the environment.
  • Soldiers often wear armor made of special alloys such as Orichalum, Mythril and Admant because they can resist normal weapons, caster bullets and enchanted weapons until the armor breaks.
  • Armies often enlist the help of Daemons and supernatural creatures to help them during warfare to destroy their enemies.
  • Every army in the world has Combat Augmented Humans which are supersoldiers who are originally Art-users who through a series of Art-based science and magic, caused their bodies to have massive reserves of Virtue, superhuman condition and able to cast many Art-based powers.

I guess that sounds logical, but without the actual story, I can't say much more.

Are the tech and magic going to be parallel to each other, or will one side have strengths that the other lacks? Magic can be one hell of an Outside-Context Problem and I easily see the first wave being a lethal Curb-Stomp Battle... At least until the shock wears off and the tech-world starts pulling in the big guns.

Also, why does the tech-world have to be DEMONIC? It just bugs me when technology is automatically assigned the "evil" role.

Oh, I'm not writing a story. I'm just trying to put down some notes and improve on it so I could use it for a future stuff.

Don't forget about the original definition of a Daemon.

  1. (in ancient Greek belief) a divinity or supernatural being of a nature between gods and humans.

Okay, in the world of Atomis - the Art causes Magic and wizardry alongside Science and technology to exist parallel. Magic and Science of the Art evolve in equal rates according to the arrow of time.

Religion in Atomis

The main religion of the people of Atomis is the monotheistic Arcana.

Their main beliefs is based of many world religions and several occult, esoteric and mystical religions.

This is their central tenets

  • Belief in a God
  • Enlightenment
  • The world is divided into many layers
  • Advancement for all
  • Frequent seeking of knowledge and wisdom
  • Belief in supernatural beings

Huthman, do you have an actual question or concrete thing you want help with?

If not (and the answer seems to be no) and you're just looking for feedback, then this should be in Writer's Block, not World Building.

Yes, I know the naming of the sub-forums is confusing, but still.

I forgot about it, now here's the main question.

A demonic planet named Judecca has suddenly appeared and is arriving towards Earth. The planet is the size of Jupiter and it has one moon which is the size of the Galilean moons combined.

  • How would the world of Atomis react?
  • How does the Atomis react back by using magic and science of the Art?
  • How would fields of the Art-users try to study it?
