Becuase the amount of Live Action remake threads are getting cluttery, I made this thread so people could discuss all of them in one neat place. For ease of catching up, I'll post all the Live action Disney movies we have and the movies that will be coming soon.

I can at least say that at least it's not a live-action version of the original...

But how exactly is this going to go down? So they're going to bring in the totally-unrelated Snow White and Rose Red, and yet there won't be anything from that story in there?... I have no idea what their plans are for this.

My guess is that Disney was looking to remake Snow White, but needed an "angle", the way Maleficent was cast as the good guy in her movie. Then along comes this offer for a movie with a character with a similar name on it, and they go "hey, why not merge them? That way, we make the Rose Red movie and everybody comes thinking it's a SN sequel."

As for how much from the original tale of RR will be included, probably not a lot.

One thing I wonder about is, how will this affect the role of The Prince. Does he still end up saving the day with a kiss? If so, is Rose Red's struggle ultimately pointless? Or does she facilitate that behind the scenes?

I estimate that this is going to wind up like Frozen where Rose Red's sisterly love ends up saving the day. The Prince will probably have no part in it. Either he'll be a well-meaning guy who just doesn't cut it, or he'll be a jerk. The latter seems more likely.

If they keep the kiss... Well, it could be the first lesbian kiss in a Disney film!

[up] They're sisters. I.. don't think that's the part of the Frozen fandom they want to cater to.

OK, that's too facetious.

Still, the whole thing seems as though Disney's trying to get lightning to strike twice. What was one of their biggest recent successes? A movie about sisters where their sisterly love saves the day. So they're going to do another one like it.

I have no idea how they could do this thing that doesn't have us scream "You've GOT to be kidding me!" by the end.

[up] Well since then they've only done one that really used the same beat, 'Maleficent'. So let's see.

Disney can, on occassion, be pretty creative. Until we have more information on what their approach is, much less what the story is actually going to be, I don't think we can really responsibly comment on whether this'll be any good or not.

Didn't I hear somewhere that they were actually planning on doing a Prince Charming film?

The plot involves Rose Red going to save her sister from the poisoned apple with one of the dwarfs in tow. Presumably her sisterly love will bring Snow White back from the dead.

How can you make a movie about a character that has very little personality?

I actually wasn't. Robbery was correct the first time.

The fact is, though, who at Disney thought we wanted to see a film about Prince Charming? It'd take a lot of effort to make the character compelling. I've seen takes on Cinderella that make the prince a more developed character, but with the Disney version?... What can you do with that?

Why not combine all of the Prince Charmings into one? We have these fairy tales where a random Prince just wanders into the scene and saves random women. What kind of a character is that? What are the circumstances that make him who he is?

Though, I doubt Disney will explore that kind of a character, its still worth considering.

Again, Fables already did that, but then that character was a rat bastard. Overall, animation-wise, it'll be interesting to see if they can overcome the stain the Shrek franchise has left on 'Prince Charming' as a name.

"Prince Charming" has always been more of an idea than a real character, except in deconstructions, like Into the Woods and Fables (and I'd say he was considerably more complex then just a rat bastard in Fables...though he could definitely be a bastard). He's an idealized male image for a female lead to fall in love with, usually very thinly characterized. You still see "Prince Charming's" of similar descriptions in reams of YA literature, and in literature for grown ups as well (and whatever you'd call Prince Charming's female equivalent, too).

I've always felt that the Prince in Sleeping Beauty was pretty good. They give him an opportunity to be pretty cool by having him go up against Maleficent in her dragon form.

What could they do with Prince Charming? I dunno. I don't even know if they intend to, or if that's just a rumor. I agree it'd be hard, given that in the Disney film he shows up twice and doesn't really do much either time. But just because I can't think of anything doesn't mean no one else could.

They did a pretty good job with Prince Charming in the recent Cinderella remake, in my opinion.

And now, Disney's making their own live action Peter Pan. Because their rivals' attempts were such runaway hits.

To be fair the problem with that one wasn't that it was a live action Peter Pan it was that they just used the Peter Pan story for windows dressing for their generic chosen one movie.

[up][up] Well, they could do something similar like Peter Pan (2003). I'm just curious how they would do Peter Pan after all of these adaptations that have come before? Will Captain Hook be bumbling or menacing? Will Peter Pan be subjugated to Adaptational Villainy or Adaptational Heroism? Will the costumes look like the Disney version or will it be more closer to the novel? Will Captain Hook suffer a Death by Adaptation which is Truer to the Text?

Disney's remaking damn near everything, aren't they?

And yet it's another company that's making the live-action Little Mermaid film. People are already protesting because the Little Mermaid won't be red haired in this version... Never mind that Disney's not even making it. They've dropped the ball for once.

(I am slightly more optimistic for that... It's supposed to be more like the original story. It could make for an interesting film.)

Fox's Peter Pan was a damn good movie, Creepy Oedipal subtext aside. Hell, Jason Isaacs is my favourite iteration of Hook.

And Disney's kind of already done a villainous Peter Pan (albeit on TV):
