This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.
Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:
- If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
- If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
- You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
- Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
- If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
- Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

On the topic of TRS thread lying stagnant for a year and being closed with nothing done, which we still haven't found a solution for last time I checked, that's a problem in IP but not to the same extent. I think this is probably because changing a single image is easier than changing hundreds of wicks, even there's consensus to do either. And also because there are a lot of threads and it's hard to deal with all of them.

Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project!Recently I opened a discussion on why Emoticon should be Useful Notes. One of the mods (Septimus Heap) promptly threw the discussion into the morgue, claiming Emoticons are Paratext. When I messaged him and noted that this is false, he still insisted he was right in cutting off the discussion because he said so. I'd like to know what other mods thinks of this, but to me this seems like an abuse of power.
To whit, what I said was
The case you made is not particularly strong, that is, since emoticons usually serve some storytelling role such as conveying informality or modernity.
This page isn't about how emoticons convey "informality or modernity" in Chat Speak, it's for whenever an emoticon appears in a work, which is essentially People Sit on Chairs.
For example, we don't have the trope Hashtag, but we do have #HashtagForLaughs.

I apologize if this is not the correct place to bring this. I just noticed this page, Adaptational Ability, was just launched. It obviously was not a good draft to begin with, let alone be launched, so it should be sent back to the TLP.

This is the proper place for that.
This forum seems really undermoderated at the moment. We have a dozen unopened threads currently, the oldest of which has been that way for more than two weeks, quite a lot of threads with expired clocks, one of which expired as much as two and a half months ago, and a lot of old, concluded threads that haven't been closed yet. This one hasn't been touched in over a year.
I screened the unopened threads. One common element that is missing from them is a wick check; something we require people to do. I let a few pass because the writeup adequately demonstrates the problem, even though I probably shouldn't per our policy.

Contains 20% less fat than the leading value brand!Would Big Damn Kiss, a redirect, having about double the wicks than its target, The Big Damn Kiss, ~1800 vs ~1000, respectively, be a reason to "rename" the trope?

Disambig Needed: Help with those issues! tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13324299140A37493800&page=24#comment-576I'd say no, if only because the names are already so similar.
Sorry if this is a lot, but there's a lot to take care of.

The moderators are handling some of these topics right now. Some have been opened, some crowners appear to be inadequate as noted in thread. Otherwise:
- Ghost Lights: May need some more votes.
- The Jailbait Wait: This was something I wanted to work on - I did start the thread after all - but Real Life started to interfere.
- We Have Been Researching Phlebotinum For Years: Probably needs a new crowner; old one's broken.
- The Edwardian Era: Closed.
Is there a way to do a wick check without manually counting or numbering tens of thousands of list items?
Edit: Whoops, I read the number of people as the number of articles, but it would still be nice to know if there's a way to do a wick check without manual counting or numbering.
Edited by UNoWho on Mar 26th 2019 at 11:26:45 AM
Never mind, I found one. Notepad has a line counter, so if I paste the wicks from the related search page into there and delete every line that isn't a wick, it'll count them for me.
Which wicks do I check? The links to trope pages are impractical to check because of potholes. Do I have to check them?
If there is more than 400 wicks, you check a number of wicks equivalent to the square root of the total number of links. If there are 400 or less wicks, you check 20. Taking randomly from the Related To page.

Edited by UNoWho on Mar 26th 2019 at 2:37:57 AM
If RNG lands on a redirect, you note it is a redirect in the Wick Check and move on. Sometimes there's something more to say, but usually isn't.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.
Mods, would it be possible to routinely pin the first post with a crowner link in every TRS thread that has one? With crowners broken, hooking of crowners is completely useless, and seems to be applied inconsistently. As such, we have to rely on the direct link to vote on crowners, and these posts often get lost if there is continued discussion after the crowner is created.
