The name sounds like it's just people turning into animals, but the description makes it focus into "People Voluntarily turning into animals."

I want to expand it into general "Transform into an animal", with Baleful Polymorph being, as its redirect Involuntary Transformation implies, just any Involuntary Transformation.

The defining quality for this trope is whether their transformation was voluntary or not, the latter being Baleful Polymorph.

The History seems to show that the "Voluntary Only" bit was there when the trope started, search "defining", but also that no one followed that?

Examples on the page of Animorphism of Involuntary Animal Transformation:

  • A majority of Fan Works, excepting the Voluntary one at the end I added myself.
  • The only example in Live-Action TV.
  • The only example in Music.
  • The only example in Toys.
  • A majority of Video Games.
  • The only example in Visual Novel.
  • A majority of Webcomics.
  • The only example in Web Original.
  • A majority of the Western Animation folder.

Starting to sound like just a Description change is needed...

Also, Laconic.Animorphism has nothing on the voluntariness.

7 years ago talk about Baleful Polymorph makes it seem like Animorphism was originally as broad as the laconic implies.

I agree we should clarify this for the ability to voluntarily turn into an animal or animals.

I changed the Laconic page to mention that it's voluntary before this thread opened.

Would "Animal Transformation" be a better name?

[up] - Basically the same thing, I don't care as it doesn't impact voluntaryness

Bump.

Also, here's one use for general animal transformation:

Literature.Lord Of Light:

  • Animorphism: Having your consciousness transferred into an animal on your next reincarnation is a serious possibility.
    • Tak is punished by being given the body of an ape.
    • Kali voluntarily takes the body of a white tiger to hunt at times.
    • Mention is made of a poet who wrote verses not to the liking of the gods. He was turned into a jack-bird.
    • When Sam comes to the city in order to talk to Brahma, he's warned that people are evaluated for their karma and can be transferred into dogs as punishment; he should be very wary of any strays spying on him. Later, one of the Masters of Karma who was threatened into helping Sam suffers the same fate, howling as he watches his human body be destroyed.

I forget if it's against policy to promote TRS on ATT or anything...

Clock expired.

Since the new post does not add anything relevant to the thread, closing for real.

~MaLady, I'll check with the rest of the staff on that. Highly doubtful unless if an ongoing ATT query involves the trope in question, but I need to make sure.

Just noticed your post in the meta discussion, so relaying that post to the rest of the staff.
