People die every day. Some of them are famous, some important, many newsworthy. This thread is for announcements of deaths in the news, discussions of the legacy of those recently deceased people, and memorials of same.

Please observe the usual rules about posting ettiquette and note that this is in On-Topic Conversations.

To start with, the last of the original Von Trapp Singers has died, Maria Von Trapp, 99, in Vermont. (This is the daughter of Captain Von Trapp, not her stepmother who was also named Maria. In the musical, they called her Louisa.) http://news.yahoo.com/maria-von-trapp-99-dies-vermont-005546425.html

2023 mod note:

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This doesn't mean that you can't discuss their life or legacy, or express an opinion as to whether they escaped justice for their actions. But if that starts to become a longer conversation, there are other OTC threads that may be more appropriate.

Kyle Jean-Baptiste, the youngest ever Jean Valjean in Les Misérables (and the first black actor to land that role), died yesterday in an accident. He was 21, and had just signed as a main character in another musical after his first shows as Jean Valjean a couple of months ago.

Perhaps a couple of lines from a song in Les Misérables might be apt - for all actors in that show who have died:

Here it was they lit the flame.
Here they sang about tomorrow
but tomorrow never came.

Brian Sewell, ‘most controversial’ art critic, dies aged 84

Brian Sewell, who was described as Britain’s most famous and controversial art critic, has died aged 84. The London Evening Standard critic died on Saturday after being diagnosed with cancer last year.

Sewell underwent successful surgery in July 2014 to remove a tumour from his neck but a strong course of radiotherapy affected his ability to taste and talk. He was severely unwell for the final month of his life, his friend and fellow art critic Charles Darwent said on Saturday.

An acerbic critic, Sewell made no secret of his contempt for modern art and was renowned for barbs directed at the likes of Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst. He called Emin “trivial”, Hirst “fucking dreadful”, David Hockney “a vulgar prankster” and once claimed graffiti artist Banksy “should have been put down at birth”.

His waspish putdowns, love of fine drawing, knowledge of art history and his genteel diction made him one of the UK’s best-known critics. His witty turn of phrase led to regular television appearances, including two turns as a panellist on the BBC gameshow Have I Got News For You.

Keep Rolling On
