What is wrong with my taste in TV shows

As i've said many times in the past, i've watohed numerous Tv shows over the years. But, in recent years, whenever i enjoy something about a Tv show, everybody else seems to think it was a shortcoming of the series and/or ruined it as a whole. But when i notice something about a show i don't like and/or wished didn't happen, everyone else seems to think it was good storytelling and made the show better and/or more exciting. And it's not just TV either, it even happens with movies too.

The things i'm talking about include:

Character couples breaking up - If enjoyed the couple and they broke up, while i'm lamenting about it, everyone else thinks it was a good move. (e.g. Ben/Julie Breakup)

Story arcs - If i enjoyed a show's story arc, everyone else tends to rip it a new one. (e.g. Young Justice's story arcs and Teen Titans story arcs)

When comedy outweighs the action - When i feel like a show puts too much effort in the comedy than it does the action, everyone else thinks that the comedy was the show's best and strongest aspect. (e.g. Teen Titans, Xiaolin Showdown and American Dragon: Jake Long)

When a main character is put through too much strife and problems - Whenever i see a main character go through a large amount of trouble in their respective show, i feel an amount of sympathy while everyone else considers it good storytelling and is happy that they happened. (e.g. American Dragon: Jake Long, The Secret Saturdays, Ben 10 franchise, Thundercats 2011, Avatar (Legend of Aang and the Legend of Korra))

And it's not just TV either, this happens with animated movies too, it makes me wonder if there's something wrong with my taste entertainment.

[up][up] & [up] Toonzone.com, I posted a thread in their DC animation section, explaining how i felt about Teen Titans becoming somewhat obscure compared to Young Justice, Ultimate Spider-Man and Ben 10. I mentioned how i liked the story arcs and the people there said that the story arcs were dull and uninteresting, they all said that they preferred the comedy.

Ennnhhhhh.... I Don't know. Both those shows were quite awesome.

I got worst taste, I bet. Especially when it comes to Toon Zone's opinion of some of these examples and how well they were recieved when they first came out (and likely still are)...

- She Zow - Pound Puppies (2010) - Littlest Pet Shop (2012) - Camp Lakebottom - Packages From Planet X - Jimmy Two Shoes - Sanjay And Craig - Uncle Grandpa - Grojband (which I think is infinitely better than Total Drama Bullshit!) And the list goes on, but I won't waste your time.

There is nothing wrong with your taste in TV shows.

My favorite TV show is a Disney animated sitcom from 20 years ago that has a fandom, which while still active(!) is very small. The Toonzone forums called it clichéd, while I don't think so. On the other hand, a specific episode of the show that I do consider clichéd, generic, boring, is also a fan favorite.

One of my favorite Nicktoons was voted most forgotten and never had a large or active fandom in the first place. Lots of people never watched it, don't remember it, or think it was terrible; its page was the first one I ever made here.

On the fairly popular Total Drama, while my favorite character is a pretty much universally-accepted Ensemble Dark Horse, one of the characters I miss the most is someone obscure both on the show and within the fandom, who more or less got a replacement who is considered better by many, but not as good by me.

Basically, sometimes your opinions will go against the majority, but that doesn't make you wrong. Everyone has their own opinions; if everyone agreed all the time the world would be a boring place.

[up]What are your favorite Disney and Nick shows? I'm curious as to which one was voted "most forgotten". It obviously wasn't The Brothers Flub or Butt-Ugly Martians, because I created both shows' pages here. And I have to wonder just what could be voted more forgotten than those two, considering the former didn't even have a Wikipedia article for a very long time.

I tend to go for the obscure a lot:

  • No one knows what Birdz was, but I remembered seeing it in Disney Adventures a long time ago, and finally found it.
  • The aforementioned The Brothers Flub, which I enjoyed when it was on. I acquired both of the VHSes of it.
  • I also have VHS of several other obscure shows, like The Bluffers, Ovide and the Gang, the Bucky O'Hare cartoon, Kissyfur, etc.
  • In addition, I have something called Get Muggsy!, that was handed out at a short lived shopping mall kids' club. And something called Li'l Creepers, a monster-based cartoon so obscure that I can't find anything else done by its production company.

[up] I suppose you must not see my posts often.

Disney show favorite is Goof Troop, ridiculously obsessed over that show for more than a year now to the point that, even though I didn't create it, I've probably added more content to the pages here than everyone else combined (title refers to this fact).

I was talking about Pelswick (avatar source), though it's not actually my favorite Nicktoon (it's #3 behind Rocko's Modern Life at 2 and Hey Arnold! at 1). Yeah, I figure that The Brothers Flub is more obscure considering I think I saw it a grand total of once and all I remembered about it was the boss's name (not sure about Butt Ugly Martians though) so I don't know if they even knew they could vote on it. (That or they decided it didn't count as a Nicktoon).

[up]Done the exact same to The Dreamstone, obscure show that I mostly enjoy, but it presses all my Berserk Buttons concerning fiction so I obsess over it. Most of the stuff I've wrote on there is likely just bloated ranting.

@srebak: Your preferences seem thoroughly acceptable to me, probably much more sane and leniant than mine.

I admit I don't like it when the show's universe seems to picking on the protagonist specifically. ie. they Can't Get Away with Nuthin' and get An Aesop handed every episode, but also get a load of unfair crap handed to them at a constant basis with the other characters just enabled catalysts to their suffering. It's partially why I prefer Ensemble Cast show, which at least abuse the entire cast indiscriminately rather than just focusing it all on one.

You say your tastes very often differ with the views of the majority of other fans, and yet, you only provided a few examples. I watched, read, and played hundreds of stories, and in most cases my views were in the majority.

There is nothing wrong with your tastes, you just concentrate on a few small things.

i feel an amount of sympathy while everyone else considers it good storytelling
Er, personally, I don't see much of a difference there. I'd say if something is making you feel sympathy toward the protagonist, it is good storytelling—good storytelling makes you feel emotions.

@OP: Maybe you just don't share the majority opinion. There's nothing wrong with that, despite what many people would have you believe.

Psi001 Since: Oct, 2010

[up][up]Not always, since there are points that audience pity is not deliberate and moments involving characters that were intended to be entertaining come off more mean spirited or broken in plot. See Unintentionally Sympathetic for example, for sympathetically written character that are neither deliberate or helpful to the story (and often lead to their intended focus of sympathy becoming Unintentionally Unsympathetic).

We are all different, and we have a right to our own opinions. It's just that, in general, people feel compelled to post their comments when they disagree than when they agree over something. It's human nature, sadly.

Hey it could be worse. You could like a show in that a mere mention of its name causes everybody else to comment how much they hate the show. Which has happened here.

By the way, I'm talking about Ultimate Spider-Man. And yes, I genuinely like this cartoon.

Let's see here. I have the audacity to admit that I like the following TV shows:

Cat Dog, Cow And Chicken, seasons 4 and 5 of Sponge Bob, Chowder, The Marvelous Misadventures Of Flapjack, My Gym Partners A Monkey, Camp Lazlo, Catscratch, Back At The Barnyard, The Mighty B, The Wild Thornberrys, Mike Lu And Og, As Told By Ginger, post-revival Rugrats, seasons 9 to 17 of The Simpsons, Hanna Barbera cartoons, some of Gene Deitch's Tom And Jerry... (although some of those I find decent, yet entertaining).

I must have the worst taste of any person on this forum.

What I am saying, OP, is that I can sympathize. I tend to go against the norm there too.

About that Teen Titans thread you mention earlier. There was only one person that gave that opinion on Teen Titans more serious arcs.

I don't think one person represents what the entire site think in regards to the show.
