TLP Crash Rescue - Fixing prematurely launched TLPs and pages

Go To

Prematurely launched pages and pages that weren't fully fleshed out at the point of launching, are a big problem. Since these usually share several problems at once, this thread is aimed at re-running them through the TLP for fixing - the usual fix - or cutting them if they are too bad.

Problems this thread deals with include bad names, not enough/bad examples, unclear description, etc.

For the interested, here's a list of recently created pages. Launches

Note: Please do not request a mod to unlaunch drafts that don't have any issues besides lacking a launch notice/24hr launch notice. While 24hr launch notices are mandatory, there are a few exceptions to the rule. If you see a draft's sponsor launch a TLP without an announcement, it's best to remind them of our TLP Guidelines first. If they continue to repeatedly launch drafts without a launch notice, you can report them on Ask The Tropers or the TLP Community Issues thread.

New account Ag102594 is creating stub pages in the wrong place in attempt to add an example to a page

Characters. The Main Trio may need to be moved since it's an un-indexed sub-page to a another character page (with no indication on the page itself), the title may be overly common (I imagine several works have a "Main Trio")

A Cat in a Gang of Dogs definitely needs work. The title is... bad, and it sounds like it's a metaphor for something, rather than the very literal meaning. The description is what needs most work, though, as its main point is "For some reason, in works of fiction featuring a cast of dogs, writers often include a cat as part of the team".

The last sentence is the part that looks like it could become an actual trope: "As they often think they are superior, the cat is likely The Lancer of the team, representing the counterbalance to the canine leader." — the dynamics between the various cat/dog stereotypes would be good. Sadly, the page instead says it's used to not be racist towards cats.

In case it comes up on your radar, Ghost Squad is not abandoned. I started writing it, then my wife needed my help, and probably will for the rest of the evening, but I didn't want to risk losing everything, so I put it up and indexed it. I'll add more tropes, and crosslink, tomorrow.

The Tana Mongeau page has never been updated since I sent a stub notifier to the creator in November 13. I don't follow the subject, and it doesn't seem like anyone is interested in salvaging it.

That could be cut. It's the sort of thing someone ought to use TLP for prior to launch.

@Fuzzy Boots: next time, I recommend using the Sandbox namespace for rough drafts, because life does happen. smile Pages in Sandbox are assumed to be under construction. Just remember to cutlist when you're done.

Can't Count Bullets was recently launched by ~Metroid Peter, but there's no record in the TLP launch list (courtesy link). Metroid Peter added the trope to the Cut List in an attempt to unlaunch it, which is why I'm bringing it up here.

Update: This troper also made DramaticGunFailure which seems to be exactly the same description as what's on Can't Count Bullets...?

I've intermittently lurked in this thread but never actually used it before, so not sure about the protocol, but I wonder if we can take a look at Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse, which was launched recently. It got plenty of hats, it doesn't look like there were any particular shenanigans in TLP, but it's just... kind of bad. The definition is rambling, vague, and poorly written, to the point where it's hard to parse what the trope is supposed to be. Example:

"This trope is for when a character has been using an excuse or justifying their negative behavior, actions or gathering sympathy, and this is not acceptable."

Not acceptable to whom? The audience? The other characters in the story? It doesn't say.

It seems to be trying to be "Freudian Excuse, but badly done," which runs afoul of Tropes Are Not Bad.

The description is terrible. My view on what the trope is comes from the page quote, because the examples aren't so clear, either. The quote makes it seem like characters try to use ... literally anything... as an excuse for being a bad person, and get called out on it as them just being a bad person in themselves. Isn't that a weirdly specific version of Shut Up, Hannibal! (for villains) or "The Reason You Suck" Speech (for others)?

I don't think I've ever seen a draft so poorly written and have so many hats. Jeez. I'm embarrassed to say that I would have bombed that but I thought someone else was dealing with it because the name sounds like a stock phrase (full sentence).

Further complicating how bad this trope is:

... when they use it to justify their actions or gain in-universe sympathy, they get called out on it, or when someone is expected to sympathize with them over it.

That and a few other phrases in the description make it seem like this concerns both in-universe characters' and out-of-universe audience members' sympathy.

Send it back, plez.

[EDIT: It's also worth noting that the sponsor never made a single comment in the draft's comment section. I just think that's weird.]

Yeah, needs to be sent back, pronto. I'll relay the issues spoken about this trope to the draft after unlaunching.

Pants-Pulling Prank is a stub page and seems to be "pants pulling prank exists." 14 hats and 3 bombs. Barely any crosswicking right now.

I think it could be sent back because there is potential for more in the description talking about the gag and how it could be Played for Laughs or Played for Drama.

Also, Rust-Removing Oil seems to have been missed by the thread. There's no potholes or "compare/contrast" section in the description, and the crosswicking was unfinished. Here's the draft. It had five hats, zero bombs, and 13 replies. I think this is a trope, but the claim of "very common" and the distinct lack of "has many examples" imply something's up here.

[up][up][up][up] Pants-Pulling Prank is problematic because, as-written, "Alice pulls down Bob's pants" is a complete example. There is no more context that needs to be given, and when a trope is that broad, it tends to be "this exists" which... isn't really a trope.

I could've sworn I said as much in the comments, but it could've been in one of many other "Prank" tropes. Cave Cat was basically trying to make a trope page for every single prank out there.

Gah. It'd be better to have a single trope for "pranks" and then give details in the example. Is Cave Cat doing this consistently? They were in trouble a while back for bad trope launches.

Just that it was one of the (many) reasons that I had issue with Cave Cat that technically isn't against the rules, but seems like it should be.

And yeah, something like "stock pranks" or something might actually be useful thing.
