TLP Crash Rescue - Fixing prematurely launched TLPs and pages

Go To

Prematurely launched pages and pages that weren't fully fleshed out at the point of launching, are a big problem. Since these usually share several problems at once, this thread is aimed at re-running them through the TLP for fixing - the usual fix - or cutting them if they are too bad.

Problems this thread deals with include bad names, not enough/bad examples, unclear description, etc.

For the interested, here's a list of recently created pages. Launches

Note: Please do not request a mod to unlaunch drafts that don't have any issues besides lacking a launch notice/24hr launch notice. While 24hr launch notices are mandatory, there are a few exceptions to the rule. If you see a draft's sponsor launch a TLP without an announcement, it's best to remind them of our TLP Guidelines first. If they continue to repeatedly launch drafts without a launch notice, you can report them on Ask The Tropers or the TLP Community Issues thread.

Aight, I've sent them something similar asking them if they can keep further launches on hold and join this discussion.

Becoming Hero is a bit of a mess with only four ZCE's, but a pretty impressive summary, albeit for a combination of a novel due to come out in 2017 and the webcomic meant to introduce readers to it.

HERO Superhero Novels lacks any tropes, but has a good summary.

Drifters was created over 2 years ago and yet it’s only got 4 examples, 2 of which are Zero Context Examples, one is a non-notable Averted Trope, and one appears to be misused (it’s supposed to be Hypocritical Humour, but the way it’s written seems more like Hypocrite).

Scooby Apocalypse was created 4 days ago and all of its examples as written are Zero Context Examples, including one which appears to be Example Indentation. I sent messages to the creator of the page on the day the page was created, but they still have not responded.

Nerve was created on the30th of October and all of the examples in-addition to being badly formatted, were all Zero Context Examples to the point my commenting them out makes the page look half-blank.

Twisted Eucharist was launched by a troper who couldn't create the page.

Roleplay.Bay 12 Castle Foxhound Squad is an "in-progress" (for two months) stub.

As per usual with these roleplays, there's a character sheet that's more complete than the main page, but still a mess.

Since this doesn't seem to be a "work" I'm down for cutting it under Auto-Erotic Troping.

I know we have a Rule of Three, but does anyone else think the new Literal Self Made Man article is just too underdeveloped/should gather more examples?

Strong agreement on Self-Made Man. I nearly posted as much in the TLP discussion yesterday, and now I'm regretting not doing so. Very much needs to simmer a bit more before launch.

Bumping Secret Menu Item: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13544789560A75740100&page=179#4459

Given that I'm the one who added the Chantelise example, I'm fine with it being removed if it doesn't fit.

I guess it's for things that are unlocked different from normal methods? Like cheat codes, or the I Miss the Sunrise hidden difficulty option that is hidden beyond normal unlocks? Where you entering the menu then scroll down to select an invisible option?

How would you go about putting a existing page in TLP? Do you cut first, or just put it in and replace with the new version once it's ready?

On second look, the Chantelise example does call out added menu options. I suppose I was fixated on the New Game Plus aspect of it, as typically this type of thing is instead accessed by certain keypresses.

Thanks.

I just found Alleged Power Limits. It's over three years old, but since it has four freaking wicks I'm bringing it here.

It's straight up just "Beyond the Impossible plus complaining." I can't think of a reason not to cut it. Maybe, just maybe I could theoretically see it as a subtrope ("A character's power goes Beyond the Impossible of stated limits"), but the description and examples are just way too complain-y to salvage anything and, well, that would just be The Same But More Specific of Beyond the Impossible.

Definitely worth cutting if it's both The Same But More and complaining.

In regards to Secret Menu Item, I'd recommend scrubbing the whole thing altogether. It's being pigeonholed as both a restaurant-specific phenomenon and a pseudo-Easter Egg in media.

Restaurants have secret menus, but (a) they are always subject to change, (b) are highly dependent on where you live, and if the staff even want to make it in general, and (c) a large number of entries referenced on the "Secret Restaurant Menu" pages linked in there aren't even official, but things you have to purchase and assemble yourself from component sandwiches.

I'd suggest moving the media examples to Easter Egg, scrub the whole thing altogether and take it back to YKTTW for further consideration and refinement.

Eater Of Their Own Words just launched. The problem is that the trope, as described, has nothing to do with the standard idiom, "eating your own words", which means being forced to admit that you were wrong. This is a much broader trope about regretting having said something.

(In the real world, you may regret your words if you have to eat them, but that's not a requirement. If you predict something terrible, and it doesn't happen, you'll probably be happy to have to eat your words.)

It also starts with Example As Thesis.

At the very least, Needs A Better Name.

Wow. Bump that one back. The name is misleading, the writeup isn't clear on how it's different from the other tropes it lists as "similar" and in the YKTTW, the response to "how is this not Laser Guided Karma But More Specific?" was "Laser-Guided Karma has to be slow; this doesn't."

Re: Secret Menu Item: Move any examples that aren't already there to Easter Egg (although one looks more like a Guide Dang It! — the video game example about the safe combination) and dump it. The restaurants section is only a list of links to other sites. Unless there are examples of Secret Menus used in media, which, I can't think of any..

Just found The Rest Of Us Just Live Here, which apparently was created two months ago.

It currently has a two sentence work page description which tells you absolutely nothing about the work itself, and all the examples on the page are Zero Context Examples.

More Popular Expy was recently launched and immediately came to the attention of the Expy Cleanup Thread for being full of almost nothing but the exact sort of Expy misuse they're working so hard to correct. In addition, the description is pretty stubby.

Larkmarn Since: Nov, 2010 Relationship Status: Hello, I love you
#4498: Nov 29th 2016 at 7:33:10 AM

So, Pirate Crab launched and... I'm not exactly excited about it. It just seems too specific, and while the trope seems solid ("there is a stereotype that crabs are pirates") many of the examples are more "happens to be a crab, happens to be a pirate." For example there are examples from works where everyone is a pirate, and there happens to be a crab.

That doesn't seem like a trope to me.

[up] I'm okay with the basic premise, but the problem is that the entire thing plays both "more popular" and "expy" pretty fast and loose. Some entries specifically say that they're coincidences, some are objectively not as popular as the original, and overall it's troubling. There's a reason the thing had 5 discard bombs.

On a more general note, I really think something needs to be done with the whole hat/bomb system. If a proposal has 5 hats to launch and 5 bombs to discard, the latter should be subtracted from the former.

Agreed. Especially since it's way easier to add a hat than a bomb.
