For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

So we literally picked this one out and random while scrolling up and down the complete filmography of American International Pictures with our eyes closed, but this should be a good one: I Was a Teenage Werewolf.

I can still recall a moment at some point in the 1990's when I was watching syndicated reruns of The Wonder Years and an episode that featured Kevin Arnold watching one of the werewolf transformation scenes in this movie on 1960's television. That was probably the first time I ever saw any sort of werewolf transformation scene, and, consequentially, it must stand out in my mind as the most iconic "wolfman" of the horror genre just because I remember it more than anything Lon Chaney, Jr. ever did.

This movie stars a young Michael Landon, who would go on to do a lot of high-profile work appearing in television shows that nobody born after 1984 has probably ever watched—notably Bonanza and Little House on the Prairie (ask your parents, if they're old enough).

Got some goodies today!

A long time ago, I was (and still am) a fan of Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force. In the time that I discovered mods and skins for multiplayer, I came across a very unique personality.

People, I present to you Actor/Writer/Filmmaker/Artist/Cartoonist/Modder Laz Rojas.

Only until more recently did I come across more info on this guy including the VICE article. I only knew of him through his weirdass one-man films and the STV:EF mods. He's up there with Neil Breen, but his work is so much more adequate. He's had a GoFundMe campaign supporting him and everything. I think alongside paying for the late, great Allan Holdsworth's funeral expenses, this is one of the few good campaigns I could find there. The guy's unironically incredible. Sadly, the only thing he really does these days is put up iMovie reels of old screenshots of his 60's-British-Spy characters. Here's hoping he gets his hands on a big budget and a cast of more than just himself.

[up]If Lon Chaney, Sr. is remembered as "The Man of a Thousand Faces," then this guy is surely "The Man of a Thousand Wigs."

Tonight, I Was A Teenage Werewolf. Not me though, someone else was.

Before that, in the pre-show, we watch a movie that lew's aftershow video introduced me to, Mahogany Knots (not to be confused with another movie that has the exact same name) - a movie that was essentially The Room decades before the actual The Room. Since that movie's only 40 minutes long, it's pre-show material rather than main show material.

Come on in and enjoy the cheese! https://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

Apparently two Cinema Snob videos got taken down because the account they're from got taken down for copyright infringement. But the Snob himself is still up; maybe he filed the claims against another channel?

Oh, Ho-Oh-HOOOOOOooooooooooooo...

I overstuffed pre-show for Kung Fu Friday. Come in before the movie tonight for a short documentary from VICE with the creator of Miami Connection ([awesome][awesome][awesome])... following another episode of Takeshi's Castle.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, Jackie Chan is kicking butt and dubbing himself in Chinese Zodiac.

I know I'm really, really late to this discussion, but I just got Sean's little notification about the Suspiria remake.

...Goblin isn't even working on the score? Heresy! Part of the reason why that movie is so special is its soundtrack! The pounding, tribal tom-toms and the ghastly, wraithlike wailing and howling that occurs whenever a supernatural murder occurs really, really makes Suspiria feel like experiencing a nightmare given tangible form.

Oh, and of course Tilda Swinton is in it. No points for guessing what her role will be. Fucking Christ. What a travesty.

So this is a biographical film based on the criminal history of one Eddie Dodson, who in the year 1983 managed to rob 64 banks before he was arrested.

Here, Dodson is portrayed by Jim Sturgess—a name I didn't recognize until I noticed he played "Jude" in that visually stunning-yet-substantially vapid Beatles musical movie Across the Universe. The supporting cast boasts Patricia Arquette, Chloe Sevigny... and Christopher Lambert.

This is Electric Slide.

Soooo many echoing sound effects. From time to time, I'd wonder if it's a sound glitch with the video, but the voices sound normal, and not all sound effects do this either. There are times when the effect is very heavy, and other times where it's absent.

And the way they echoed, sounded like a horror movie or something. Or like it was done for effect (it's hard to explain, but it sounds like it echoes in a very specific way). But, why? In a way, it actually reminded me of that crappy animated adventure movie we saw a few days ago, the one made in Mexico. That also had overblown sound effects, but in a different way.

A quick search found another copy of this movie that doesn't have the echoing sound problem (but instead shrinks the picture and pushes it to the corner). So it's not intentional. Just weird, how it affects certain types of sounds but not others.

Also, a scene showed a woman watching a movie in a theater where the nudity onscreen was blurred out. Was that the You Tube upload that did it, or the original movie that blurred it out? (Considering this is "Rated R for language, some sexual content/nudity and brief violence," I'm gonna guess the You Tube upload blurred it out.)

So what did this get? Well, here are some quotes from the chat:

"This is so dull."

"No kidding, I think this might be the worst film I saw with you guys."

It got ★. A bunch of Xs, but just enough non-Xs (including a 2) to pull it up to a 1 overall.

Remember Rapsittie Street Kids: Believe in Santa?

The same company made another movie just as awful. A sort of Jurassic Park ripoff. And apparently, the director himself, Colin Slater, put it up for free on You Tube for all its "fans" to "enjoy". Here.

[up][up]The video I had originally found came from that movie channel with all the "TV Edits," but that particular movie wasn't explicitly labeled as a "TV Edit" in the title, so I had assumed it was the complete, uncut movie. Didn't realize it had edits or THAT subpar sound.

Anyway, we haven't dipped into the well of totally obscure Burt Reynolds movies all that much since Rent-A-Cop ([awesome][awesome])—and, long before that, Malone ([awesome][awesome], but the original VHS cover is still a [awesome][awesome][awesome][awesome]).

So tonight we find Mr. Reynolds in 2006 with a few of his other graying actor friends (Robert Loggia, most notably) playing retired war veterans living out their golden years in a "little piece of trailer park heaven" (IMDb synopsis) and vying for the affection of an attractive lady neighbor, naturally played by an aging A-list actress of Burt Reynolds calibre (Raquel Welch), when somehow our quiet little troupe of characters stumbles onto a stash of mob money and find themselves on the run from both the mafia and federal authorities.

Movie titled Forget About It (Maybe we just will).

So I had found myself scanning through the IMDb profile of the late, great Bill Nunn from Do the Right Thing, Sister Act, and the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, most notably (we've also seen him in a few past features here, like School Daze[awesome][awesome][awesome]—and Ambushed[awesome][awesome]), and I just so happened to notice this stupid title... and a promotional poster with "that guy who played Dwayne Wayne from 'that Cosby Show spinoff' program" prominently featured as a main selling point.

It's also some piece of trash produced by Lloyd Kauffman and Troma (and they, too, really want you to know that they got "TV's Dwayne Wayne" on board for this because it's that important... They actually got a hold of another incredible personality who gets less than 2 minutes of screen time, but that's neither here nor there)

The plot concerns an evil succubus preying on the insatiable sex drives of black men in New York City, and its up to our story's heroes to stop her.

And so, submitted for your approval, this is Def by Temptation.

If you miss the first ~12 minutes of tonight's movie... You just might miss out the most important part! That's a fair warning! It just might be the most significant moment to uncover in the entire Troma Films library!

Anyway, first up, we're killing time with Super Deluxe.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, Bill Nunn and "TV's Dwayne Wayne" (and a surprise guest star) confront a succubus in New York City in Troma's Def by Temptation.

[up]Samuel L. Jackson popping up for a minute and dying (via some really shoddy film editing).

So tonight we're revisiting the intriguing case of a 2003 "mockbuster" derived from (of all things) ''Johnny Mnemonic ([awesome][awesome][awesome][awesome]).

Tell me if any of this is sounding familiar: In an early-21st century "near future" where half the world has been killed by a viral plague known as "Neurological Degeneration Syndrome" (NDS), the remaining survivors are dependent on receiving regular treatments produced by a single pharmaceutical MegaCorp, but our movie's hero is unwittingly tasked with carrying part of the cure for the plague in his own bloodstream and finding the second half of the cure in three days or less, or else the part of the cure already inside him will kill him. And if that weren't enough, Lou Diamond Phillips bears a vague enough resemblance to Denis Akiyama to basically fill the exact same character role of "Shinji" from JM.

There is one unique (and surprisingly good) twist on Johnny Mnemonic's premise late in this movie which actually makes for a more plausible narrative, overall, (and it actually handles its Race Against the Clock subplot with competence) but still... It's an imitation of Johnny FUCKIN' Mnemonic!

Also appearing in this are Christopher Lambert (our hero) and Ron Pearlman (our villain).

...And I'm absolutely positive that we watched this one before, but I'll be damned if its not already on our viewing list. I suppose we're just gonna have to re-rate it.

Get set for Absolon...

Samuel L. Jackson nowadays demands he die in badass ways. Like in Star Wars: Episode III, he insisted he die in some glorious way, and not "like some sucka". So his death was exaggerated to be memorable.

I take it though that his brief stint in Def By Temptation was before his major fame, so his death was probably not all that great?

Got some action here for tonight. Michael Rooker is an FBI agent partnered with a female cop, and they're out to stop some other cops who have gone rogue, under the leadership of one Robert Patrick, and done away with due process in order to just execute criminals.

This is Renegade Force.
