Our Next Feature Presentation: The Stuff (10/12)

Join Us Saturday, October 12th @ ~8:00PM (US/EDT) Here: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

Great. Looks like I did not get the chance to watch another [awesome][awesome][awesome] stars movie.

I hope tonight's movie works. Drinking beer on my own is not as fun as it is to drink with you guys.

Yeah, I didn't want to rely on the YouTube upload last night for that very reason. At least there was a YouTube upload that could salvage something, but I still pretty gutted that you guys outside the United States had to be left out.

Tonight's feature presentation should not pose those problems, though. This evening, we'll be looking forward to seeing an archeologist's discovery of a Norse relic awakening a scary man in a rubber suit in The Runestone.

As much as I hate double posting, this is HUGE.

Some of you should remember a trailer for a project dubbed Kung Fury, produced by The Laserblast Film Society, that was seeking completion funds on Kickstarter, with the promise that one day a feature-length video would be available for free streaming on YouTube.

Well, not only have they raised enough money to complete Kung Fury. They also had plenty of cash to get none other than David Hasselhoff to record an original lead track for the movie and make one hell of bitchin' muzak video!

[up]Foul! How could you say that here?

Anyway, we'll be finding our groove right at this very moment with more of Legends of the Hidden Temple and Bad Influence.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, we're rolling out The Runestone.

To answer your question, Sean, we were mostly in Harlem I think.

[up]Yeah, I'm usually venturing around Midtown, the Lower East Side, and near Houston Street. Hope you had fun, though.

In other news, we've already seen "Turkish Star Wars" and a Sequel to "Turkish Star Wars" that was even more unnecessary than The Force Awakens. But, tonight, we're gonna look forward to Os Trapalhoes Na Guerra Dos Planetas, which from this point forward will be referred to as "Brazilian Star Wars".

Hoo Boy!

Os Trapalhões means (in Brazilian Portuguese - in European Portuguese it has a slightly different meaning) something like The Dabblers (in European Portuguese it would be translated to The Clumsies).

So, The Dabblers in the Star Wars is the closest translation possible. However, the common translation in English DVD's uses the word 'Tramps' (which is not the most correct word) when referring to the group.

They also made parodies of superheroes like Superman, Batman, Hulk or The Phantom (not to mention several literature characters - e.g. The Three Mosqueteers), in various TV series and movies. They even made parodies of stuff like SWAT, The Planet of the Apes or The Wizard of Oz.

So essentially, from what I can gather they're the Brazilian Three Stooges, only apparently not as funny.

If we can watch old Brazilian kids' films now, how about Super Xuxa versus Satan? I know that's on You Tube...

And there's some other foreign kids' films that would fit right in with us.

[up]Sorta, yeah. They also had some regular characters who were not part of the group who were basically stereotypes of homossexuals or Germans with lack of humour.

Imo and from what I've seen of them (which isn't much), they're hit and miss. In some ocasions, they're quite funny. In other ocasions, I'm like 'guys, stahp, it's no longer funny'.

As for Xuxa, her early stuff was more mature and filled with innuendo, and nowadays she's more dedicated to kids' stuff. The actress herself, Xuxa Meneghel, goes back and forth between this in her non-Xuxa roles.

In any case, though, we ought to watch Super Xuxa versus Satan:

(And there is a copy on You Tube with subtitles.)

[up]There does appear to be quite a lot of Os Trapalhões on YouTube. Although, while tonight's movie has English subtitles provided through YouTube's own closed captioning feature, I'm pretty sure most of their content is just Portuguese audio.

Just checked out the opening three minutes of Os Trapalhões e o Rei do Futebol, which showcased the rowdiest Sunday League game ever played and (true to the video's title) a featured credit for Pelé.

Okay, I got crap for actually liking the soundtrack to Liquid Sky, but this movie's soundtrack is amazing. Many of us find it funky. It's a mixture of funky, goofy, and trippy. Those of you who missed it missed out on a surreal experience set to surreal music.

Like the big battle scene set to nothing but pure funk.

It ended up with quite the split vote! Everywhere from X to 4 got at least one vote, but in the end, it was ★★.

You're not gonna believe this, but I found The Sorceror's Apprentice with Nic Cage on Youtube. Somewhat less surprisingly, I also found Vin Diesel's The Pacifier.

EDIT: And yes, I skimmed both of them; they're both the full movie.

[up][up]In the event that it didn't, it probably wouldn't have changed the outcome, anyway.

What still surprises me about last night how extreme the quality of Os Trapalhões could vary. "Brazilian Star Wars" certainly didn't do a damn thing to prove their chops (and Cinema Snob's judgement in light of this was very unfavorable). However, from what I've glanced at from some of their other movies (and without much understanding of Brazilian Portuguese), they definitely have the talent to make a more straightforward slapstick comedy (and can even afford the occasional Brazilian celebrity in a guest-starring role, as well as the use of interiors of Brazilian landmarks for shooting locations).

For a different taste, just check out this "Duck Season / Wabbit Season" routine

Anyway, tonight, we're rolling out what the video uploader calls, "Another Fine Mess from Bruno Mattei" (as good a sign of quality as any)—Cop Game.
