Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

I'd vote to have Older Than They Look NRLEP'd.

Changing the topic, there is Murder-Suicide, since it is too common in real life.

General examples should always be deleted.

The exception I sometimes make is on tropes we have in the crowner, so people who vote can see what the problem is, rather than relying on posts here that don't seem to match what's on the pages. When it's called, whichever decision it is, they can be deleted.

The issue is not generality. It is that the examples are written in a way that won't age well. The examples are like this: "Mark is 100 years old, but he just looks like a toddler." Note: I am not approving the generality.

Don't forget of Murder-Suicide. Should it replace the out of place post of the crowner or it is necessary to put a new entry?

Actually, there is a whole section of general examples that basically say things like "Short people often look young" and "Certain Asian people often look young".

That "general" section is history, courtesy of me. The same problem happens in the opposite trope.

Since the misplaced crowner entry never got any votes, I'd be fine with repurposing it to address Older Than They Look.

Calling Dork Horse Candidate. It technically still has a few minutes to go on the 48 hours, but with its holding at 11:0 since this morning it's not likely to drastically change in a tenth of an hour. tongue Added 22nd Jan '16 at 20:24:24 PM, 11:0

Wait, Dork Horse Candidate is a morality trope? I'll grant the flamebait/gossip bit.

I didn't think it fit with "morality" either, so I put it in the flamebait folder.

Had a look at Reasonable Authority Figure, and I find that it's something similar to Wants a Prize for Basic Decency, with the wanting part being on behalf of the editors rather than the authority figures. While the examples aren't too problematic, so I wouldn't be too opposed to keeping them, I find it generally pointless to list real people for being decent human beings.

Some time ago, I deleted a Real Life section of Evil Knockoff, because I deemed inappropiate to call the opposing sides evil, an pointlessly implied that the Romans or Frederick the Great were heroes, while they are just normal people with virtues and sins.

It looks like Manufacturing Victims was launched from YKTTW as NRLEP, so just listing it is sufficient, as I just now did under the flamebait/natter/complaining folder.

Evil Knockoff doesn't seem to have attracted any problem edits since then, so I'm thinking leave it alone for now.

As for Reasonable Authority Figure, I'd think that would fall under "too common to trope". Yeah, there are assholes in positions of authority out there, but they stand out because they're more visible than an RL RAF.

For Older Than They Look, given how stupidly large OlderThanTheyLook.Real Life is (over 200K characters as of this post; the next biggest subpage is the anime one at ~120K, and most of the rest are at down in the lower 5-digit numbers), I'm thinking it would qualify for the "too common in RL to trope" category.

Not only is it to common, what a particular age 'should' look like varies with time and cultural expectations.

Added to the crowner, all under "too common to trope":

These additions put the crowner at 13 entries total, so please don't add any more to Crowner 40. Save them for 41, which will go up after the currently pending issues are resolved one way or another.

[up][up][up][up][up][up][up][up]For the record, I put Dork Horse Candidate as a morality trope because it involves the other candidate being an Alpha Bitch, which is a morality trope in and of itself.

I'd like to suggest Preacher's Kid as a NRLEP trope. For reference, here's how the trope is described:

"All children are individuals who exhibit good and bad behavior, regardless of what their parents do for a living.

"Except these kids.

"If you're a preacher's kid in fiction, you're either a perfect little angel or—more commonly—a beastly little devil more devoted to mischief and/or promiscuity than any kind of religious study. [...] Of course, in actuality preacher's kids run the gamut in personality traits, but their screw ups tend to be far more public."

Real Life examples seem inappropriate for a few of reasons:

1. It's a morality trope, along the lines of CharacterAlignments, "Ass" in Ambassador, or Good Parents.

2. It's a trope not possible in real life. Even the trope description itself says that real preacher's kids "run the gamut in personality traits". No real human being is a perfect angel or complete demon.

3. Finally, most of the real-life examples seem to be either shoehorned in and boiling down to "Celebrity X's is the child of some type of clergy" or listing specific behaviors and assuming everyone will have the same interpretation of the morality—one example identifies the person as a porn star; another as "the head of a pro-gay marriage alternative church"; another "sings bawdy songs" (oh, the horror).

The trope description does seem to invite real life examples by mentioning that their "screw ups" tend to attract publicity, but even if examples included objective "screw ups" (e.g., a couple of examples mention trouble with the law or confessing to a crime), this seems likely to accumulate Flame Bait.

[up] While I disagree with the claim that it isn't possible in real life, I otherwise fully agree. It doesn't sound like a trope where real life examples should be welcome.

I miss when it was just one or two reasons for NRLEP listed, instead of an entire essay. tongue

But seriously, I'd have no problem with putting Preacher's Kid up for a vote in the next crowner given the misuse, after voting on the last three entries on the current crowner is concluded.

[up][up] Nohbody, I apologize if my post was excessively long, but, never having posted here before, I wasn't sure how much justification was needed. I figured people would want enough context to make an initial assessment without digging through the actual trope page.

[up][up] Not sure, there wasn't really much mention of the reason in the YKTTW for Manufacturing Victims, though there is mention of the Church of Happyology as an RL example. At a guess, though, at least in part it may be because tropers are really lousy at playing Internet Psychiatrist. tongue

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
