Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.
This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.
Common problems include:
- Conversation on the Main Page
- Flame Bait
- Squicky content
- Impossible in Real Life
Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.
If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.
If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.
Before adding to the crowner:
- The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
- There must be support from others in thread.
- Any objections should be addressed.
- Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.
When adding to the crowner:
- Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
- Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
- An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).
In order for a crowner to pass:
- Must have been up for a minimum of a week
- There must be a 2:1 ratio
- If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
- Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
- Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page
Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.
Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.
After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

Notes:
- This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
- Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
- As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
- The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

[edit] Taking care of that in the edit thread while I'm there for Adults.

All your safe space are belong to TrumpSuggesting that Blue-and-Orange Morality have its Real Life Page cut and be declared NRLEP. The definition is
"These characters have a moral framework that is so utterly alien and foreign to human experience that we can't peg them as good or evil. With Blue and Orange Morality, the values are so foreign, that such concepts can no longer be applied. They may not even know what these things are, or even if they do, will often find them confusing. The concepts are not necessarily beyond their grasp, mind you, but are just not something which they'd place any importance on. ... Conversely, they may have these concepts, but apply them in vastly different ways. Such as regarding motionlessness as the epitome of evil, or viewing exploration as an element of chaos. "
The Real Life page is full of examples that are Values Dissonance or Above Good and Evil or Evil Cannot Comprehend Good, or of assigning Moral values to animals. There are a couple that might qualify as "a moral framework that is so utterly alien and foreign to human experience that we can't peg them as good or evil": psychopaths and children who have not yet gained a "moral compass". Additionally, until we encounter a sapient race of aliens, or manage to communicate meaningfully with a non-human terrestrial sapient, there aren't going to be any Real Life examples.

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.I axed the animal stuff from BlueAndOrangeMorality.Real Life since animals do not have morality. Natural selection is also not about morality.
The examples left I think actually fit the trope, so I don't think we should cut the page.
Check out my fanfiction!Ok, Between me taking out all the "We don't agree on the morality of this" and you taking out all the critters, we're left with what I agree can be valid examples: mental disorders (I've combined the two examples into one, since they were basically the same thing, stated differently) and children too young to have learned "morals".
I withdraw the nomination for NRLEP status. We'll need to keep an eye on the page to keep it clean, though.

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.I should note that I moved one example to the Web Original page (a blog post), since that was written as a story about animals, but they're presented as having a moral in that story, and they're certainly discussing the trope there.
Check out my fanfiction!Added N-Word Privileges and Condescending Compassion to the crowner. We discussed them a few pges back, but they probably need a vote.

My alignment is Chaotic Cute.Again, may I suggest for the former a cleanup thread?

You can suggest it, sure. But as anything that gets brought up here is probably riddled with issues, the vote is basically "Get rid of or clean up." So a vote is still needed.

[edit] Didn't realize until after submitting the Cutlist entry that there's 216 inbounds, so cutting it is unlikely. Guess I'll go back there in a few days to see if it gets declined, then redirect AwesomeMcCoolname.Real Life to the main trope page.

All your safe space are belong to TrumpAwesomeMcCoolname.Real Life has been declined, yeah.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanBloody hell!
BTW what does "declined" mean in this case?
Not cut. The cut request was not accepted.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIn what will like be my last post in this thread, I'll nominate Comedic Sociopathy for having only "general exmaples" and apparently it hasn't been discussed here as of yet. Farewell.
135 - 169 - 273 - 191 - 188 - 230 - 300Awesome/RL redirected to the main page.
As for Comedic Sociopathy, that it calls for "generic examples only" is a problem in and of itself, as generic examples are prohibited wiki-wide (not just RL sections). The kind of edits I suspect it would attract without that "generics only" note could easily fall into the "Tropes attracting flamebait, complaining, and natter" category of NRLEP. However, other than removing the generic examples (all of them), I think we should wait before something more drastic than NRLEP, to see if my suspicions are right or I'm just being misanthropic again.
All your safe space are belong to TrumpAxe, meet generic examples. Generic examples, meet oblivion.
Check out my fanfiction!Question. Crowner's getting long again. Do we want to wrap this one up with the current votes, or should we leave it open for a few more?
I ask, because Ghetto Name has a lengthy RL section that is natter and discussion of actual people's name in... less than flattering terms. If anyone thinks we actually need that on the site, I admit, I'm going to be disappointed. But I'm wondering if I should throw it up on the current crowner, or wait for the next one.
My alignment is Chaotic Cute.15 entries? It's time for a new crowner. As soon as the last couple open entries in this one are called we can make a new one.
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Is it just me, or does it seem like the RL examples on And the Adventure Continues are just shoehorned entries?
(Obviously if it's to go up for a vote, it'll be on the next crowner, given the post immediately above this one. )
All your safe space are belong to TrumpYeah, that's an ending trope. Another one to put on the crowner when we make a new one.
Not just you.
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.The RL section from Ghetto Name needs to go. That's exactly what I always expect discussions like that to turn into.
Condescending Compassion has no real life section, and I don't see it becoming a problem if one is created, so I'm inclined to vote that down.

The child is father to the man —OedipusCondescending Compassion has no Real Life section because I axed it. Check the history if you want to see what kind of problems it caused.
Check out my fanfiction!Apparently, a trope called Condescending Compassion invites tropers to show off how condescending they can be.
My alignment is Chaotic Cute.WTF is a generic example?

Crown Description:
Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:- Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
- Must have been up for a minimum of a week
- If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.
It needs to be listed on No Real Life Examples, Please! as well.
