alekos: Cerea has a long, shameful history of winning via sneak attacks, jumping the gun, etc. She'd be invincible as a blackguard instead of the paladin she believes herself to be.

Can't say that I had a good reaction to some of the English voices. I think that Rachnee and Suu are great, but Miia doesn't sound right to me, nor does Papi. The latter sounds too old - or rather like her actual age - when the point is that although she's in her late teens or older she looks and sounds and acts like she's twelve.

Mero and Cerea I was neither here nor there about. Cerea sounds, alright I guess. Mero's VA sounds overly squeaky.

Centorea sounded kinda underwhelming to me. I always imagined she'd have an English accent.

tbh I've never really liked Molly Searcy in anything I've heard her in.

I thought she was good as Rory Mercury.

I mean, I thought she was okay as Akame... right up until she had to emote. i don't remember that going as well.

Also, I don't know that character. Is that someone from Bodacious Space Pirates or something?

Otherwise, yeah… outside of Rach and Smith, the others were meh. And that's probably because those two characters are the most subdued in their expressions. From that I'd assume that Lala will be okay too.

Yeah, no, god no. I just went back to listen to Mero's voice as well, and if I can't get through a 2-minute preview video that does not bode well for an actual dub.

Everyone always sounds so forced. I mean, look, I get it - it's a script and you're trying to force English words to match up in timing and spacing with Japanese ones. Admittedly anime Japanese has some of the same hallmarks when compared to how people talk in real life, but still.

It's been fun.

I can't help but wonder if I would've liked the voices more had I not seen it subbed first.

Then again, that hasn't been the case for other shows...

Maybe I shouldn't comment on it since I never listen to English dubs (only Japanese original and dubs in my native Italian), and don't know anything about American voice actors, but I don't like this too much. Basically the adult/mature voices are okay, but the young/cutesy ones kind of suck, or at least don't seem appropriate enough. In my opinion, also, the original Japanese dub was a tough act to follow, since I almost never found a series where all voice actors were so spot-on with every character.

I'm curious about the other characters though... Will Lala have an Irish/Scottish accent? Will Draco have a masculine voice that turns squeaky when her secret is revealed? And what about MON?

"Effective Altruism" is just another bunch of horsesh*t.

They already dropped the accent ball with Centorea, so probably not, I don't think I know who Draco is, and MON will probably sound just as average as the rest of the cast.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect that level of characterization or involvement from this dub. Smith in particular sounds like someone trying to do an impression of someone else doing the voice she thinks the character should have, and yes, I know that's an awkward as hell comparison, yet here we are.

(Same applies to Centorea.)

Very much so and really there is not enough Ham-to-Ham Combat and Chewing the Scenery.

Works like this they really gotta throw themselves into it.

Shelley Calene Black is just doing her Ririka voice which is very ill fitting for Smith.

Dub is out.

I just got through the first episode. The quality kinda fluctuated but it managed to be at least decent. My main complaint is Miia sounds just a touch older than she should.

Oh, and the guy Kimihito punches has a wacky Texas accent.

Second edit: this has nothing to do with the dub, but I love how the soundtrack has 70's wah guitar riffs in it.

Iirc doesn't that guy use Osaka-ben in the original Japanese? If so, that's just a case of Accent Adaptation.

I know, just thought it was worth pointing out.

Wrong accent though, someone from Osaka should have a New York or New Jersey accent and not a southern one. Southern accent should be reserved for the Tohaku accent.

Which is wrong, culturally in almost every way. Osaka is akin to New York or New Jersey in almost all aspects including the same kind of rudeness, hustle and pretty much everything else.

When someone does that they clearly do not know a thing about what they are doing.

Southern accent should only be used for Tohoku, Southern Yokel style would be only for someone speaking Akita's really extreme version. A southern city accent should only be used if someone is speaking Hokkaido dialect.

Kyushu's languages have a lot in common with Canadian differences with US English and Satsugu dialect would basically be hardcore Canadian. But Kyushu and Satsuga do not show up in anime much if at all. I have only seen one out of all the shows I watched and it didn't get dubbed into English.
