This thread is for general discussion of page quotes, whether to change, move or remove them.

Unused quotes should be put on a Quotes Wiki page (just replace the namespace in the URL of the wiki page you are making a quotes page for with Quotes/) or, if they don't have an article, on Quotes Looking for an Article.

The Searchers has two quotes. The first one kinda-sorta applies to the film, but the second doesn't really say anything about it.

Just move the 2nd one to the quotes tab (not yet made), zap both, or something else?

The Searchers: Seems like I agree with keeping only the first quote.

Heroes Prefer Swords: my main issue with the current one is that it does nothing to illustrate the trope. It's a description of the trope, not a demonstration of it.

It basically just says the same things as the first line in the description.

Both quotes for American Football were moved to the quotes page.

Exposition has two quotes. I prefer the second one, thought either works.

Agreed. The Robot Chicken one is far better for Exposition.

Exposition: Yeah, go with Robot Chicken. Also, the image should be moved to the right as well.

In Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas, I'm not quite satisfied with the quote, because it was more or less just describing the trope's name; it doesn't do any demonstration or explanation.

I found this one from the quotes page, slightly modified for concision and applicability:

"Thirty years of martial arts. Combat experience on five continents. Mastery in every gun and bladed weapon. Still haven't found any defense against Mom crying into my shirt."

Michael Westen, Burn Notice

I think this quotes explains all of "bad men", "love for mama", and "loving mama despite being a bad man" part very well, at least in comparison to the current one.

Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: I am preoccupied that the suggestion doesn't talk about the trope being mostly a villain trope.

And I Must Scream: has a quote from the Trope Namer. And it's really long. There's a couple of nice shorter ones on the quotes page. Thoughts?

The Voiceless has two quotes. Personally, I dislike both of them. Of course, given the topic, I'm not sure it should have a quote. Maybe:

"...." - Silent Bob.

Ditto on Voiceless.

And while I'm here, Andrew Jackson has two quotes, one from a Disney special (or something) and one from Cracked. While I'm personally inclined to move the Cracked quote to the (currently nonexistent) quotes tab, that may be because I'm a bit annoyed at how they so often get cited for stuff like they're some kind of authority of fact. tongue

Andrew Jackson: I am inclined to leave the first quote - much shorter.

Andrew Jackson - While I like both of them, my vote goes to Disney one, simply by the virtue of being conciser.

Cracked quote for Jackson moved, de-potholed the Disney quote.

I like the Legacy of Kain quote for And I Must Scream.

Andrew Jackson quote works.

Cracked works hard to be reliable about its facts. Their articles have to be carefully researched and backed up with sources, and they have some very good and quotable writers.

On the other hand, when 'every page with a header quote from Cracked' is part of the TV Tropes Drinking game, reducing the number certainly won't hurt.

As much as I love the quote on Voodoo Shark, it's really an example of It Runs on Nonsensoleum since it's played for comedy, not meant to be taken seriously.

Is there a hard-and-fast rule for how far quotes should be indented? I tend to think long thin ones look better with less indentation, and tall fat ones with more (e.g., that the Voodoo Shark one could do with being a notch further towards the middle), but if -> is standard practice I'll leave it.

Nocturna Since: May, 2011
#2174: Nov 30th 2013 at 8:20:50 PM

-> is standard for page quotes. For quotes in examples, it should be indented one stroke more than the number of bullets.

Edit: Huh, that's interesting. Putting the escape markup around the greater than sign yields the html code for it.

If we're going to rule out quotes that are meant to be ridiculous for Voodoo Shark, then I'm not sure what quote can be used, because that pretty much just leaves complainy critic quotes of the sort that we also prefer to avoid.
