This thread is for general discussion of page quotes, whether to change, move or remove them.

Unused quotes should be put on a Quotes Wiki page (just replace the namespace in the URL of the wiki page you are making a quotes page for with Quotes/) or, if they don't have an article, on Quotes Looking for an Article.

Image captions are discussed elsewhere and have their own thread in the Image Pickin' forum.

[up]So how does this look?

->"In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream"
—>— Tagline for Alien
->"This Time It's War"
—>— Tagline for Aliens

I'm going to go ahead and readd the quote for It Always Rains at Funerals.

[up][up]I think the first instance of "Tagline" should be wicked (wicking both would be redundant, of course), and I'm still not sure if it's supposed to be bolded or not. Otherwise I'm down.

[up] A note asking them to (A) drop by here or (B) add a better edit reason would be helpful, but I agree that for now the quote should be put back.

I left both of those in the edit reason.

[up][up]Hmm. Which administrivia page has the rules for quotes again? That would help.

It's described on Text-Formatting Rules... but it doesn't address this situation.

If it matters, The Witling has a tagline quote that I ran through this thread some time ago, and "Tagline" is wicked and not bolded—but (A) I added it myself so I can hardly claim it as precedent, and (B) the mere fact that nobody has changed it doesn't necessarily mean that it's right.

So he went ahead and put spoiler tags in the quote, which I do believe is a no-no.

Messaged them, and yes, spoiler tags do not go in page quotes.

All right, well, at this point I see two options for that one.

We can leave it, spoileriffic though it be.

We can remove it, and look for a better one.

Personally I'd go with the former, since it's a Death Trope and spoilers are (or should be) unmarked on it anyway.

Also just for posterity, to elaborate on [up] and [up][up], I believe the rule is "No spoiler tags above the example line." The only exceptions are for humor value, and I can't think of any specific examples of that on an actual trope/work page.

Now, I will say this... in terms of pulling the quote altogether, the spoiler warning specifically does say that there will be unmarked spoilers ahead and this comes before the warning.

Now, common sense would lead someone to avoiding the page, I'd imagine. But yeah.

That is true. But to be honest, it's not even a "stealth" Death Trope. The word "funeral" is in the trope name.

I mean I might be a little myopic here, assuming that readers know that Death Tropes are Spoilers Off.

I don't know, it could go either way, and I don't feel strongly—but I'm certainly leaning towards keeping it as-is.

Unless there is a better option, anyway.

Not seeing the "boring but" part of the quote in Boring, but Practical. And even if we keep it, the last two sentences are just irrelevant.

  • Trash Talk: Both quotes suck. From the Quotes subpage, I like the one from Big Bang Theory best.
  • Military and Warfare Tropes: I think the second one have a broader context. The first sounds a bit like War Is Hell
  • Boring, but Practical: Not seeing the "boring" aspect either. Something from the subpage might work better, but not sure which one I like best.

From Quotes.Boring But Practical I like these two:

->So many in the UNDF disparage the seeming technological disparity between the UNDF and the Covenant. But those who truly understand war knows that it is not the flashiest or shiniest new piece of technology that delivers, but rather it's the ones that does nothing more than getting the job done when coupled with the skill of the user. More often than not, low tech is the best tech.

Jacobs: Never let me down before.

Page quotes aren't supposed to have potholes.

[up] I'm assuming he just copied from the Quotes tab; formatting can wait, he just put them here for consideration as quotes.

[up][up] I like the first one, even though it's wordy—the second one isn't as snappy as it's trying to be.

However, there's a grammatical error ("the ones that does nothing more") in the first one and I'd suggest checking the source material before pasting that quote as-is. I think I'd also cut the first sentence; the quote is already pretty long, and in my eyes, it works with just the last two sentences.

One other concern re: the source material... Is the title really styled as "Halo the Art of War" or should it be "Halo: The Art of War"? The title as displayed looks super awkward.

[up]Checked the source material, and the title is supposed to be Halo: the Art of War. As for the grammatical error, it is unfortunately from the source material.

Otherwise, I agree that the first sentence is unnecessary.

Hm.

Should we fix the error, or would it be acceptable to slap a (sic) on the end of it? Because I really do like that quote.

"I'm assuming he just copied from the Quotes tab; formatting can wait, he just put them here for consideration as quotes. "

You got it right. I did do it for those reasons. And I agree the first sentence of the Halo fic quote is unnecessary. As for the error, could we just include "(sic)" in the quote?

If the error comes from the source material, then we should keep it and add [sic].

Died in Your Arms Tonight is just restating the quote name. Suggesting the quote from Les Miserables from the Quotes page as a replacement.

The page quote of Rooting for the Empire sounds more like The Bad Guys Win. The quotes in the Webcomic or Tabletop Game section of the Quotes subpage is much more suitable for this trope.

Denser and Wackier only informs the trope obtusely at best.

EDIT: And it turned out to be johnnyfog vandalizing the quote section again, but even the old quote seems more complaining than informing the trope.

The Simpsons no longer marks the elevation of the sitcom formula to its highest form. Episodes that once would have ended with Homer and Marge bicycling into the sunset (perhaps while Bart gagged in the background) now end with Homer blowing a tranquilizer dart into Marge's neck.
Slate Magazine, The Simpsons: Who turned America's best TV show into a cartoon?

Also the quote on Made of Evil just restates the trope name, and says a nasty effect, but I'm throwing this out there as an alternative.

"In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged in secret, a master ring, to control all others. And into this ring he poured all his cruelty, his malice, and his will to dominate all life."
—Prologue to the Lord of the Rings films.

Or it could be shortened as needed.

"And into this ring he poured all his cruelty, his malice, and his will to dominate all life."
—Prologue to the Lord of the Rings films.

The quote on Drinking Game is more talking about doing it wrong.
