We're going to appoint people in each of the subforums to welcome newbies in by an automated PM and show them how things work in the particular subforum.
The appointment thing is so that at least one person knows it is their job, and so the newbie doesn't get buried under a PM onslaught the first time they post.
We will give the appointee (now called Heralds) a spiffy icon badge so people will know they are on the job for everybody. There will also be access to a report that shows who is new in the subforum.
If you want to apply for the position, all you have to do is post a welcome draft here. That way, a moderator will consider you. If someone else has already applied for the position, don't worry! Multiple people can apply for one subforum.
This is a list of the heralds that have already been appointed and the subforums that still need heralds.
Open sections with inactive heralds:
- Betsyandthe Five Avengers — World Building
- Ori Doodle — Old Folks Home
- Cyto Zytokine — New Media
- Totemic Hero — Webcomics
- JHM — Music
- Parable — On-Topic Conversations
- GastonRabbit — Content Violation Discussions

Good catch.
The translation drafts both need work. Lakingsif, your message only talks about the rules and says very little about the actual subforum. Water Blap, yours is trying to be a bit too inclusive, so you end up repeating yourself. There shouldn't be that many indented paragraphs. I think you're in the right direction, but you really need to tidy it up before I can work with it.
By the way, Quag, I'm still waiting on that revised application if you'restill interested.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerI'm still interested. It's just that I've been busy with an animation short I have to deliver in 4 days.
I'll do the necessary corrections next week.
I had written that in order to discourage people from writing stuff that is very NSFW, in order to avoid the nuking of threads the same way the Nunnery thread was nuked/deleted.
But I'll rephrase it.

The message itself is okay, but that's an example of poor style, which I don't think should be included in a quasi-official message. It's not the phrasing that's a problem, exactly, it's the potholes. I am getting the impression you don't understand what a Sink Hole is, which for a prospective forum herald, I find worrisome. There is more than one kind, and the above is not an example of the first kind the article describes. It's the "chained" kind.
Yes lots and lots of tropers write that way. It's bad though. Lots of tropers write This Troper and natter, too.
It'd be better to make that sentence "You can talk about movies that have them, as long as you don't get too descriptive about racy or disgusting subjects in your posts."
From Sink Hole: "In a wiki, it's better to pot hole words which represent the article they are linked to."

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.Ok, I'll correct it later. Thanks.
I'd like to volunteer for being the Troper Coven herald.
"Monsters are tragic beings. They are born too tall, too strong, too heavy. They are not evil by choice. That is their tragedy."Ok, I've made a few changes. Is it good enough or do I still have to make corrections?
"Hello, [[troper]], and welcome to the Live-Action Film forum, where we talk about movies, new and old. This is a cool and relaxed community, so feel free to take a seat. However, there are just a few things to keep in mind:
- Be sure to read the forum rules here. In this community, things are usually kept civil quite easily, but keep in mind the primary rule for the site: Don’t be a dick.
- Explicitly NSFW images and links should not be posted, and repeatedly breaking this rule is grounds for banning. You can talk about movies that have them, as long as you don't get too descriptive about racy or disgusting subjects in your posts.
- Related to the above, the current Content Policy forbids the creation of articles on subjects deemed to be primarily or solely pornographic. As for movies that might have artistic pretensions, each case will be analyzed carefully, in order to see if there's a line being crossed or not (for example, threads about movies that seem to only aim for shock value, e.g. A Serbian Film). Movies whose articles are cut under it are not allowed. Movies whose articles are stubbed/locked, despite not being under the Content Policy, will, nonetheless, be analyzed carefully. In terms of the latter, it is restricted to talk about the cleaner/general details in its discussion. Anything with a stronger judgement is discouraged on the forums.
- Behaviours such as trolling, flaming, or being racist/xenophobic or sexist are not allowed. If you come accross them, use the holler button located above the offending posts to contact the moderators.
Finally, if you have any other questions, please feel free to PM me your concerns or comments and I will do my best to answer whatever questions you may have. With that, we're at the movies. Come see us and have a seat. Want some popcorn?"

Alright, here's my draft:
Hello, [[troper]]! Welcome to the Troper Covens section of the TV Tropes Forum! This is the subforum for anybody looking to group up with like-minded fellows in a coven! If you don't see a coven that you like, just make one yourself! No club idea is a stupid one; you're sure to find a few people who will want to join!
There are, of course, a few ground rules:
- You're not going to get anywhere without at least reading the forum rules. They're mostly your standard forum list of rules, but it's always important to know them so that you don't break them by mistake.
- Anything that's NSFW, such as images or links, is not tolerated on TV Tropes. Don't post it.
- We do not want covens that: explicitly involve meeting up in real life, are about NSFW topics, aren't actually groups, are racist (sexist, homophobic, etc), copy the stated purpose of clubs that already exist, or are hateful against one or a few people in particular. We don't need any of that here, alright?
- Also, don't make threads exclusively for complaining. If a thread devolves into complaining, it will be locked!
- Also, no exclusive clubs, ever. Anybody can join any coven they wish.
That's all! Have fun.
Any suggestions?

"Monsters are tragic beings. They are born too tall, too strong, too heavy. They are not evil by choice. That is their tragedy."^^ I made an edit that might help cut down on the complaint threads.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyQuag 15, you're all set.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerThank you.

I sent you a badge. You're officially on the job, so just answer questions as they come along.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerWelcome aboard, Quag!
I don’t even know anymore.Thank you. I'll do my best.
Thank you as well. My name is definitely not Harold.

Let us herald the appointment of a new herald, whose name is probably not Harold.
Congratulations, good luck with it, and all that.

Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)I've edited my post slightly. I'm still hoping to get made a herald.
"Monsters are tragic beings. They are born too tall, too strong, too heavy. They are not evil by choice. That is their tragedy."Sorry for the thread bump, but with all of the new features that need talkin' about, lots of people are going to be showing up on the Wiki Tech Wishlist. Can we please have it modified to change mentions of Fast Eddie to Drewski and itcdr?
Hyperforce Go! http://vmkid.me/Huh. It seems like your herald message was blanked out. Only yours.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman~VmKid, is it good now?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI can see his message now among the herald greetings. Obviously, I can't test if it's going out on PMs, but hey, at least it seems to be working.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Yeah, messages seem to be going out again.
However, it looks like the format of the link to the thread about quote buttons is broken.
Hyperforce Go! http://vmkid.me/So, I was wondering if it is possible for us to have a "YKTTW herald or and equivalent. Yes, I know the YKTTW is connected to the wiki and not that connected to the fora at all (having its own...um, unique "culture" so to speak) However, I feel that a lot of tropers (especially new ones) would really benefit from having someone (or maybe even a select group people) guide them in the right direction concerning the development of new work/trope/whatever articles or the improvement of existing ones.

Macron's notes^ we sort of have "YKTTW heralds". Arivne, DAN 004, randomsurfer, me, Solip Schism, and a few others typically monitor and edit. We've been in there a while and are around enough to respond. Maddy is sometimes in there, too.
EDIT: I lost this thread! Geez - so my translations message needs work! Thanks, I'll go find it!

OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!^ Strictly speaking, we have regulars, but we don't really have anyone specific to greet newcomers, etc?
TV Tropes's No. 1 bread themed lesbian. she/her, fae/faer
This is late now, but the Live-Action Film subforum herald welcome message has a Sink Hole: "You can talk about movies that have them, as long as you don't get too descriptive in your posts." I know forum posting and wiki editing are kind of separate, but probably that should be changed.
