I have a feeling that the series is going to really start running out of steam with this one.

I bet that Kotick will soo be pulling his "You Have Outlived Your Usefulness" card on COD as soon as it runs dry on cash.

Trailer looked a little interesting. I hope my friend gets the game, I love watching my friends play these games.

Oh come on, that's not fair! I'm just finally started Modern Warfare 2. I haven't even gotten to Black Op yet. They need to work on something else.

http://www.geek.com/articles/games/activision-confirms-next-cod-will-have-premium-online-features-20 110510/

During a Q1 earnings call held yesterday, Activision confirmed that the next COD release will come with premium online features. That means buying the game will not be the end of your spending in order to experience all that COD has to offer in terms of multiplayer features.

Activision has not revealed specifics about what premium features means other than to say it will be “further online monetization.” That translates to gamers paying for more than just map packs this time round, and could even see them having to sign-up for a subscription.

I do not play Call of Duty games so I really don't care about this, but the potential effects if this turns out to be profitable are troubling.

Geek.com is misleading. They're not talking about online play - they're talking about social networking features (that is, probably, advanced clan support).

Kotick already said gamers wouldn't pay for what they'd been playing for free.

That Geek.com article is referencing something in May 10, 2 weeks ago.

^Yeah, but that's still having to pay for stuff, which is still cause for concern.

From what I understand, you'll be able to rent your own private servers for a fee.

Yeah, but Activision would have a lot on their plates in that regard, because there are a lot of private server services already.

Oh BTW, whatever happened with that Court Case between West and Zampella against Activision? Last I heard it was meant to happen on the 24th.

Makarov has also discovered the location of the Russian president's daughter. The group move out to Berlin to try and prevent her kidnapping. Playing as Frost, gamers must find the daughter and protect her, while making their way through war-torn Berlin. The daughter, however, is captured and flown away.

What.

Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to this game, but unless they pull this off right, a lot of whiny Moral Guardians are going to come down hard on this. On the other hand, Bioshock 2 has the "Capture The Sister" game mode, so it's a 50/50 sort of deal. Honestly, though, I'm predicting another "No Russian" with this one.

[up][up]  I did wonder how they were gonna try to top the 'No Russian' sequence.

Honestly I half expected a optional mission involving a box of puppies, a microwave and a industrial meat grinder.

Here's the Redemption trailer. It's good to see Captain Price and Wallcroft again. Even though Wallcroft was only in one level in the first Modern Warfare and he's a minor character that no one cares about.

To think that five years ago Sam Worthington was grappling with complex scripting in subversive Australian television, and that now he's combating SFX in pro-war propaganda.

It's an amusing leap, to be sure.

I had a chance to see (most of) the single-player campaign online, and I wanted to give my quick impressions.

(Spoilers are marked)

MW 3 is visually and thematically much closer to the original Modern Warfare then the sequel - I counted several instances where setpieces, conversations and events either referenced (or replayed) key moments from the whole series. There are also several moments that appear to be direct lifts of moments from the prior games. Price executes a South African warlord in much the same fashion as he killed Al-Asad, we get a new perspective on the mission "One Shot, One Kill" from an Ultranationalist's perspective, and there's a sequence during the second act in an underground London subway that evokes memories of "Crew Expendable".

Gameplay is mostly the same as the previous installment - not many new weapons, and some levels just feel like extended cutscenes, but overall, it's a very fun experience. The action sequences in this one go over-the-top, however - you'll get to engage enemies in a free-falling Russian Presidential airliner, ride shotgun on a truck traveling through underground stations while shooting at a subway car, engage in a helicopter-vs-helicopter battle above the New York Stock Exchange, watch as the Eiffel Tower collapses and breaks apart in front of you, and the best one, assault a safehouse while you and another character don Juggernaut armor. It's ridiculous, but fun.

You'll also be surprised at the death toll in this one - let's just say nobody's safe. Not even the lead characters.

If I had any complaints, I'd say the campaign breezes by fairly quickly, but overall, I'm planning to buy the game - great campaign, and I look forward to trying out the multiplayer.

I did wonder how they were gonna try to top the 'No Russian' sequence.

If you mean the "Davis Family Vacation" scene, it's pretty short and, honestly, forgettable. Later on, however, you get to replay the opening of the "No Russian" from the perspective of an ex-Ultranationalist who is shot and comes up the elevator to find the aftermath of the massacre.

[up][up] Quick question. I saw one of clips of the campaign online ( The Soap scene. You know the one) and wanted to know:

In Modern Warfare you shot the Big Bad. In MW2, you threw a knife at him. In MW3, do you beat Makarov to death with your bare hands? 'Cause I can't see the ending getting higher than that.

@Torquey

It's crazier than you think. (major spoilers follow) Price and Yuri attack Makarov's safehouse in the Arabian Peninsula by donning Juggernaut suits and fighting their way up to the helipad on top of the building. Yuri is injured and tells Price to go on alone. You chase Makarov up to the helipad, leap onto the helicopter as it's taking off and throw the pilot out before having a scuffle with Makarov. The helicopter crashes, and it looks as though Makarov is going to shoot you (while you're both standing on the glass atrium of the building). Just before he fires, though, Yuri shoots Makarov. Yuri then gets shot in the head for his troubles. While Makarov is distracted, Price (in a quicktime event) leaps up and grabs Makarov, throttles the hell out of him, wraps a cable around his neck and smashes his head into the atrium. The glass breaks, Price falls to the ground below and Makarov's neck snaps from hanging. The player (Price) sits up and looks around for a moment before getting his cigar and lighter out and having a smoke.

[up] Well. I usually don't like Activision's work on the Modern Warfare games, but I have to admit that do some fucking awesome things in them. Too bad for the multiplayer.

[up][up] Yeah, Activision's trying for No Russian 2.0. Ham-fisted delivery of one little kid's death, which isn't even fucking seen. They even fucking kept in the damage indicator! Sad thing is that it's still going to get publicity for this.

tl;dr Bobby Kotick sucks and the Modern Warfare games are fun as long as you treat them as guilty pleasures. But fuck I gotta see that ending.

Wouldn't it have been more impactful to have the family get caught up in a ground attack, following them running through the city, before they get cornered by some troops and shot? Instead of "KABOOM HEY LOOK THE WIFE AND THE CHILD ARE DEAD IS THIS TRAGIC AND CONFRONTING TO YOU?!" Also, is this "chemical agent" connected to NOVA 6 in any way?

I have to say, I outright spoiled myself immediately as Modern Warfare 2 made me lose all faith in the series story. However, the way crazyrabbits went about it makes me think that this story might not be so bad. At least if it follows coherent and logical events rather than: "The Americans are to blame! Even though it's in very suspicious circumstances! Lets KILL EVERY AMERICAN! This totally won't make the UN label us as monsters!" or Shepherd's stupid betrayal that made no sense in how he organised anything or even co-operated with Makarov.

If it is MW 3 is doing some further Arc Welding upon the Call Of Duty franchise story as a whole. More than Black Ops did with the WW 2 shooters.

[up][up]Agreed. And people look at me strangely when I say that Black Ops had a more reasonable plot and narrative.

And that shock scene... they are trying way too hard now. The nuke in the first game was actually pretty effective and got the point across. No Russian wasn't that bad in itself, but the events that followed were a plot hole ridden mess. And now we get a blatant "let's get all the self righteous tools at Fox News screaming at us for publicity reasons" video.
