You can not go to Utah again after you have eaten Utah and have not eaten.Genesis — Calling All Stations
Apparently, this album didn't do well in the US. I guess it's because it was such a big departure from what Genesis used to be (what with Phil Collins having left the band), but I still like this album a lot.
Funny enough, when Calling All Stations came out, I was confused and thought there were two different bands named Genesis.

Nonsense is better than no sense at all.Bossanova is my least favorite Pixies album, but Havalina was the song that got me into Pixies. (it was actually They Might Be Giants' cover of Havalina that I heard first.)
Genesis — Shipwrecked

Out of all my teen favourites which I thought would stay in my playlist for years to come, this is the one that has made it the farthest. Dark horses are the best.

R.E.M. - "Begin The Begin" (Listening to Life's Rich Pageant while editing more of my dad's Power Point slide sets. This one's quite aggressive by their standards, and it's a rather blunt Protest Song, too, which would have made it unusual at the time of its release. Then again, this is the album where they started moving towards more aggressive and Arena Rock-influenced music, in part courtesy of Don Gehman, who produced the album and had previously worked with John Mellencamp, among others. This one's got some great, hard-hitting riffs, a propulsive bass counterpoint, gated drums that don't sound too ridiculous for once and a nice organ line that pops up in a few places. A good way to shake things up, and a real signpost for where they'd be for the next two records. )

The first one's got some cool, flamenco-influenced guitar lines over a vaguely latin rhythm from the band and some weird mumbling from Stipe. The second track is one of their best ballads, IMO- a simple description of the natural beauty of the country in question and a subtle Take That! at American policy in Central America during the Reagan years, with the flowers in question being the Amanita mushroom that grows down there. The music is great, with a couple of very pretty guitar lines- a jangly one, some droning feedback-y ones and a harder one that comes in during the middle eight- over a loping rhythm which speeds up during said middle eight as well. Beautiful. )

You can not go to Utah again after you have eaten Utah and have not eaten.R.E.M. - "Exhuming Mc Carthy" (Yup, done Life's Rich Pageant and now listening to Document, a.k.a. the band's mainstream breakthrough. This song's an oddly funky number in the vein of "Can't Get There From Here off Fables Of The Reconstruction'', with a bouncy bassline, forceful drums, choppy, slightly harsh guitar line and even a horn section that pops up from time to time. It's also quite political, since its about paranoia and the whole Witch Hunt thing- it's even got a sample from the Mc Carthy hearings in the middle! Both political and fun! )

The whole album's great, but this one's my personal favorite off it- it's a great, sad-sounding ballad, with very vague, metaphor-laced lyrics. It's got a nice, laid-back pace, a great, chiming guitar riff, some odd drum fills, steel guitar, rhythmic acoustic guitars, well-placed piano and what I think is a string arrangement. It's very effectively melancholic. I'm not sure what the lyrics are actually about, but I think they might be using the world leader as a metaphor for honesty with oneself, fixing one's mistakes, keep your priorities in order, standing up for what you believe in and taking charge of one's own life. Or something. Anyways, it's a beautiful piece of music, so needless to say, it's recommended. )
