  • Acting for Two: In the SFC version (and later FD R), a few actors played two characters who can be said to possess opposing personalities, showcasing their versatility:
    • Konami Yoshida as both Millie (peppy, feminine and utilizes a high-pitched voice) and Phia (tough, tomboyish, with lower pitch without going completely contralto).
    • Nobuyuki Hiyama as both Dorne (Easy-going and a bit Hot-Blooded, closer to Hiyama's Typecasting) and Ioshua (calm, soft-spoken, would count as Playing Against Type).
    • Wakana Yamazaki as Ilia (well-adjusted and calm adult) and Pericci (very childish young catgirl).
    • Kazuhiko Inoue as Ashlay (older and calm veteran) and Jie Revorse (a megalomaniacal Evil Overlord). His case is averted in FD R since they decided to keep Revorse's FD actor for him.
  • Dummied Out: A bit less than half the game had to be left on the cutting room floor because there was literally no space left on the cartridge. This is why everything related to Fargett feels so tacked on and why Jie Revorse in particular feels like such a Giant Space Flea from Nowhere.
  • Fan Translation: Until 2008, this was the only way to play this game in English.
  • No Export for You: The original SNES game was never released outside Japan.
  • The Original Darrin: The Switch version (FDR) recalled the original Japanese cast from the Super Famicom game to do the full FD remake voiced parts, with the game allowing the player to choose which cast they wanted to use. This only applies for characters who had voice actors in the Super Famicom version, those who got new voiced parts in First Departure (such as Erys, Welch, Asmodeus, and various NPCs) will simply use their only available voice (normal FD). The exception of this is Cyuss (who had the same actor between both versions), and Jie Revorse (who re-used his FD voice)
  • The Other Darrin: All cast members from the Super Famicom version, barring Hiroki Tochi (who would become a series regular), was replaced in the Playstation Portable (FD) remake.
  • Playing Against Type:
    • Julie Maddalena as Ilia, who's instead a more well-adjusted, calm adult woman rather than her usual forte of peppy girls.
    • Nobuyuki Hiyama as Ioshua, being a calm and soft-spoken mage. While it's more downplayed in the SFC version where his symbology name-calling can sound a little more Hot-Blooded, when he returned for First Departure R, he made Ioshua still sound calm when calling out the symbology names.
  • Refitted for Sequel: The original plan of making Fargett a full second world wasn't possible because they literally ran out of cartridge space. The developers were able to fully realize this concept in the second game with Expel and Nede.
  • Remade for the Export: tri-Ace remade the game for the PSP as Star Ocean: First Departure and released it worldwide.
  • What Could Have Been: Fargett was supposed to be a fully explorable second world with a much more involved plot, but there wasn't enough space on the cartridge.
