Trivia / Nijisanji

Go To

  • Approval of God:
    • ZEA Cornelia, then-member of Nijisanji ID, read through the ID entry on This Very Wiki on stream and greatly enjoyed it. Finana has also looked through her tropes on the (singular at that point) Nijisanji EN character page.
    • Some EN livers, especially in the early days of the EN branch, became known for namedropping and interacting with the channels who upload clips of their streams. A few even feature clippers on their respective YouTube pages.
    • Kotaro Uchikoshi, director and writer of AI: The Somnium Files, voiced approval of Elira's cover of the Character Signature Song "Invincible Rainbow Arrow".
  • Artist Disillusionment: Mysta was open about being completely burned out on streaming by the end of his tenure, and planned to graduate earlier in 2023 (before Nina's or even Zaion's departures) before deciding that he wanted to resolve all of his prior obligations before leaving.
  • Ascended Fanon:
    • Many of the dark counterparts/Palette Swap characters of some of the livers have originated from fanart and in-jokes from their respective fanbases before making an official on-stream debut, such as Eki Eveland, Meteor Arcadia, and Cer Cerulean.
    • Several pieces of fanart of Ren have depicted him with an exoskeletal spine to match his horns. Not only has Ren used at least one of them for his weekly schedule, it would eventually be made canon in the "Wanderer" music video.
  • Content Leak:
    • Since early 2023, an individual, or even a group of individuals with inside knowledge of ANYCOLOR's workings, or at least the workings of the EN side, have been divulging behind-the scenes information.
      • On May 25 2023, the appearances as well as a debut date for what would eventually be revealed as NijiEN's Krisis wave were posted on the /vt/ board on 4chan. Almost a month later on June 14, more details on the wave's debut program (including its hosts, Mysta Rias and Rosemi Lovelock) as well as assertions that one of the characters shown off in the prior leak had already been cut behind-the-scenes, also made their way to /vt/, exactly a week prior to ANYCOLOR officially announcing the wave's impending debut on the 21st, and true to that second leak, one of the leaked designs did indeed get chopped.
      • The news of Nina Kosaka's graduation announcement had been divulged on 4chan, by someone purporting to be the same person behind the Krisis leaks, a few hours before the official announcement, and even went as far as revealing exactly when her graduation stream would be (the Friday of the following week). However, in the very same thread that was created in response to the official announcement that confirmed all the above, someone also revealed that a liver from the Luxiem wave was set to graduate in the coming months. In a thread that was posted a few weeks later on July 20th, a date (August 27th, 2023) was provided with no context. Three days later on the 23rd, ANYCOLOR would make an announcement that not only answered the question as to which Luxiem member was the one set to graduate (Mysta Rias), but also provide context on the late-August date that was previously dropped without context, as August 27th would be the day that Mysta would be holding his graduation stream.
    • TTT's debut song, "DESIRE", was leaked in MP3 form (in low-quality 128kbps bitrate) over 12 hours prior to it being officially revealed during the debut program.
  • Creator Backlash: Scarle was not very pleased with how ILUNA's debut song "Let's Get It Started" turned out; she admitted that she doesn't think she's a good singer but still felt that the song went overboard with autotune and made everyone except Maria and Ren sound "like robots."
  • Dear Negative Reader:
    • In late May 2022, Vox, in the middle of a boyfriend roleplay stream, responded to a message from Reimu (who was in the middle of a stream herself), generating backlash from viewers who felt the interaction broke the immersion of the former's stream. Because of the sheer amount of unwarranted hate messages (and even death threats) sent towards Reimu by some of the more unruly Kindred, Vox tried to address the issue in a subsequent Minecraft stream, but this was met with backlash from viewers who thought his ranting was trying too much to push the blame away from himself and the Kindred, despite coming to Reimu's defense and condemning the death threats. In response to this, Vox made his stance clear regarding the bad apples in his fanbase and clearly defined the boundaries between him and the viewers, with his friendship with his fellow talents taking precedence over whatever parasocial relationship the Kindred may develop with him.
Vox: If you attack my friends or anyone I collab with, you're a dumb fuck and I don't like you.
    • On October 3rd, 2023, as well as December 7th, 2023, Luca and Millie have each addressed the hate on NIJISANJI that has been prominent in 2023 and how people are more willing to believe other people spreading lies than the livers themselves.
  • Executive Meddling:
    • Potential collabs with hololive were teased by some of the EN talents, but never materialized despite their best wishes, hinting at interference from either company's middle management. What makes this jarring is that the non-EN branches from both companies are allowed to hold crossover collabs with zero backlash.
      • Selen teased a collab with Kureiji Ollie in December 2021 that ultimately never materialized. Stranger still, both Selen and Ollie were able to hold individual APEX Legends streams just fine. Then October 2022, after Alban and Altare announced their collab, Selen posted on her Twitter account that her long-awaited collab with Ollie is finally happening and this time, Vestia Zeta is joining in as well.
      • Takanashi Kiara and Pomu Rainpuff are fans of each other and interact a lot on Twitter, but are heavily implied to be stiffled by their respective agencies. Kiara initially addressed this during a superchat reading in late October 2021, but had to re-iterate this months later in July 2022, with Kiara noting that a collab will likely never happen "in light of recent developments". Fortunately, on October 2022, Kiara posted her schedule confirming that her collab with Pomu will push through.
      • Then on October 2022, Alban posted his schedule which reveals his Terraria collab with Regis Altare. Likewise, Altare confirmed on his Twitter account regarding his collab with Alban. The announcement shocked many fans, causing many to believe that the English branch management of both companies has finally come to terms to allow their talents to collab with each other. Which would prove true as the Selen/Ollie stream and the much anticipated Pomu/Kiara (Pomutori) streams happened soon after.
    • Kson On Air has stated that Nijisanji talents are barred from officially interacting with her, despite having positive discussions with a number of them behind the scenes. According to Kson, this is related to her being effectively Banned in China.
    • In April 2022, Anycolor folded their Indonesian and Korean branches into the main Japanese branch. Multiple ex-ID members have, with varying levels of subtlety, expressed their dissatisfaction with this arrangement and the overall lack of support compared to the Japanese-speaking talent or Nijisanji EN. This culminated in multiple ex-ID graduations starting in May 2023, with the group expected to lose more than two-thirds of their members by the end of January 2024 (From 19, 20 if Miyu Ottavia and her graduation in the Fall of 2022 is included, down to 6), leading to Hana Macchia joking that she'll probably be the last one standing.
  • Follow the Leader:
    • Nijisanji's rapid rise to popularity after it launched in early 2018 spearheaded the transition in the overall Virtual YouTuber space from largely 3D characters with edited video content (as with Kizuna Ai, Kaguya Luna, Game Club Project, and so on) to largely 2D characters with livestreamed content.
    • While Nijisanji flirted with the idea of an English branch with the temporary rebranding of Nijisanji IN, it wasn't until after hololive's inaugural English generation "holoMyth" exploded in popularity that Nijisanji decided to make a serious attempt at appealing to fans outside of Asia. LazuLight, Nijisanji EN's first group, are all ladies based in North America, are heavily fantasy-themed like holoMyth, and are all impressive singers that debuted with an original group song in a nod to hololive drawing on idol singers instead of gaming. The similarities with hololive end there, however: Nijisanji applied its usual approach of rapid expansion to its EN branch, with OBSYDIA debuting just two months after LazuLight and playing the fantasy theme more loosely, and would introduce male talent starting with the all-male wave Luxiem. Bringing things full circle, hololive would expand their all-male branch to include English-speaking talent after the successful launch of Nijisanji EN's first two all-male waves.
  • Hostility on the Set:
    • Zaion LanZa and management did not get along during Zaion's very short tenure, if statements by both are anything to go by. Zaion's public suspension was the first of its kind within Nijisanji EN, as was the extremely lengthy list of infractions disclosed in the PR statement announcing her termination. In response to being painted as a troublemaker, Zaion's actress published a 22-page document detailing each infraction (some of which she admitted were true, others which she argued were taken out of context), while also accusing management of fabricating reasons why she (and only she) couldn't use her personal gacha game accounts on stream, punishing her for reaching out to someone beyond her assigned manager for assistance, and leaving her exposed to doxxing and harassment following her public suspension. Most of her genmates touched on the subject following Zaion's termination and expressed hurt and/or exhaustion from the whole ordeal, with Kotoka noting that she "can't even wish Zaion well" in a short stream she did shortly after the termination announcement went public, while Finana vaguely recounted a time where she took Zaion's side on an issue regarding management and ultimately felt like she was "gaslit" by Zaion. The actress' comments on her former coworkers were mixed, stating that she has great respect for them, but — in response to some of the comments made about her — alludes to having information that would make a few of them look bad. During a Twitch subathon for her pre-Niji persona later in the year, she'd label both Kotoka and Finana as backstabbers over the above comments they had made about her, having been burnt by Kotoka's words in particular, as all 3 of them had been very close friends prior to any of them entering Nijisanji, and thus it really stung her to have both of them seemingly turn their backs on her during this whole ordeal. note
    • A year's worth of Executive Meddling surrounding Selen Tatsuki, as well as alleged bullying by staff and Selen's peers, came to a head on Christmas 2023. Selen's cover of "Last Cup of Coffee" was taken down by management mere hours after it was uploaded due to management having not cleared certain aspects of the music video; Selen would respond by giving fans the green light to reupload the video in defiance of ANYCOLOR rules, and was so shaken by the lost effort and money that she attempted suicide. Selen never streamed for Nijisanji again, hiring a lawyer to help her get out of her contract after management allegedly harassed her and her emergency contact following the suicide attempt. For ANYCOLOR's part, they accused Selen of being extremely difficult to work with and stated that she ignored an ultimatum sent nearly six months prior to the Christmas incident. In an infamous response video following Selen's termination, Elira Pendora, Vox Akuma, and Ike Eveland backed ANYCOLOR's side, while expressing concern that Selen had potentially planned to spread lies and expose personal details about themselves as well as other Livers.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes:
    • It is standard procedure for livers who "graduate" from Nijisanji to have most — if not all — of their content removed from their YouTube channels, meaning that anything that is not archived by fans is gone forever. As of late January 2024, there have been 4 exceptions to this (Noor from the India branch, Nina Kosaka, Mysta Rias, and Pomu Rainpuff from the EN branch), with their channels still host to the archives of most of their non-members' streams. Pomu takes the exception one step further by, whilst in the middle of her graduation stream, making all of her still existing members'-only streams and videos available for public viewing.
    • Like many Virtual Youtubers, Nijisanji livers engage in "unarchived" karaoke streams — singing copyrighted songs, then immediately setting the archive to private afterward to protect the liver's channel from YouTube's copyright strike system. Some fans may take it upon themselves to archive the streams for the benefit of those that were not able to watch said streams live due to scheduling conflicts and personal obligations, but that practice tends to be discouraged by the livers.
    • The original channel for Mashiro Memenote  was terminated on June 8th 2022 after receiving the maximum number of community guideline strikes from YouTube. The content from said channel now only exists as clips or in fan-run archives.
    • Zaion LanZa quickly became infamous for the number of stream archives that her management has had to modify or permanently private, with the circumstances behind these edits and removals culminating in ANYCOLOR suspending and ultimately firing her. Noteworthy examples include:
      • Her very first Genshin Impact stream: Prior to the stream, she had asked for, and was given permission by her manager to use her personal account from her pre-Niji days, so long as she hid her UserID number. However, she was then told by management after the stream that not only were they retroactively pulling said permission (Citing an in-game ability where people either on her friends list or those who already knew her UserID number could send her in-game gifts, which was something that was in fact occurring during the stream itself) they were also permanently hiding the archive. Finally, she was asked to create a new account for subsequent Genshin streams, as well as tell anyone who asked where the stream went that it was a (paraphrased) "peek into her hard work of the past, and now she'll start something new together with her new fans".
      • During Zaion's Cats Organized Neatly stream, she made a play on the "deez nuts" joke by pulling up an image of a bag of nuts branded "Dee's Nuts" and keeping it on-screen as she played the game. Zaion apparently failed to realize that there is an actual peanut company named "Dee's Nuts", which resulted in the stream archive being permanently privated due to copyright concerns.
      • Her Final Fantasy XIV stream, her last stream as a member of Nijisanji, was privated shortly after the stream ended. This was almost certainly due to Zaion defying management's request to use a fresh account; her actress admitted that she lied to them and instead changed the name of a pre-existing but dormant character to get out of paying extra money to set up a new account.
      • After ANYCOLOR announced Zaion's suspension on Twitter, a user replied with a clip of Zaion's playthrough of The Karaoke, featuring Zaion making light of a sexual assault victim in the game. This clip went viral, and the VOD for that stream was hidden hours later.
      • Of course, after her termination, all of her remaining streams were privated.
    • On September 19th, 2023, Vox Akuma got a community guidelines strike on one of his NSFW ASMR streams, leading to its deletion. In response, he made the decision to do the same to the rest of his NSFW content in 24 hours' time to avoid further strikes and risking the complete termination of his entire channel, much like what happened with his JP senpai, Mashiro.
    • After Selen Tatsuki's cover of Last Cup of Coffee (Originally by LilyPichu) was privated by management a mere 3 hours after it was posted, she explicitly allowed anyone that had managed to archive a copy of it to re-upload it on their channels. This ended up getting her in hot water with the company and is listed by ANYCOLOR in their official statement as one of the factors for her termination, which subsequently led to the privating of the rest of her channel's contents.
  • Newbie Boom: Luxiem, the first all-male wave of the English branch, exploded in popularity and brought in a massive influx of new fans for Nijisanji EN. For perspective, the sixth EN wave had four members reach 100K subscribers before even debuting (with the final two having more than 95K), whereas it previously took 1-2 weeks for even the fastest growing talent to reach 100K.
  • The Other Darrin:
    • Aia's lore video called for a line from each of the other members of ILUNA, but since Maria was sick at the time of recording, Aia recorded her own voice and modified it to sound like Maria. Aia expressed surprise that many people (including other livers) didn't immediately pick up on it, as she felt that she did a good job approximating Maria's pitch but did a less-than-ideal job mimicking Maria's Australian accent.
    • Yugamin the Mascot is available in all NIJISANJI apps, thus any liver affiliated with the company can turn into Yugamin, with each liver having a different take on him. Since he has no defined personality, his character can range from being a cute mascot to a creepy loanshark.
  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor:
    • Shindo Raito had his contract terminated just four days after his debut due violating it in several different ways.
    • Kingyozaka Meiro had her contract terminated four months after debut, after having been suspended for almost an entire month prior to being terminated, for breaching of non-disclosure agreements during a stream and the discovery that, in the midst of the drama between her and Yuzuki Roa, she had leaked confidential information to an unauthorized third-party.
    • Zaion LanZa was put on "indefinite suspension" just 2 months after debut, and had her contract terminated one month after that due to what can best be described as a whole laundry list of infractions. Some of the nearly dozen listed offenses include making frequent statements that were deemed offensive, comments and actions that are potentially damaging to ANYCOLOR's relationships with video game companies, lying to management about her actions and then lying to her fellow livers about her interactions with management, failing to improve after an unannounced 10-day suspension between New Year's Eve 2022 and January 9th on 2023, and finally — after being suspended publicly in February 2023 — being caught making and supporting comments that were negative toward NIJISANJI on Twitter and YouTube accounts tied to her indie persona.
  • Schedule Slip:
    • On the debut night (May 15th, 2021) of NijiEN's first wave, LazuLight, Finana Ryuugu (who was the last of the trio to debut) had a case of OBS misbehaving around 7 seconds into her debut stream (which led to said stream being jokingly referred to as "shortest VTuber debut ever"), and was unable to get it to stop misbehaving before the end of her given timeslot for her debut, causing her debut to eventually be pushed back 46 hours later (2100 EST on May 17th, 2021), where she would combine her debut with her scheduled Debut 2.0 stream together.
    • Three waves later, Yugo Asuma of Noctyx ran into similar problems, where the only thing viewers saw for 90-or-so seconds was an OBS capture window with a "No video source" error sign. His debut stream was thus delayed from 2330 EST on February 26, 2022 to 0630 EST the following morning, and even then he had to call upon his gen-mate Sonny for help just as it started, while live on air, for last-minute troubleshooting.
    • Nijisanji's 4th anniversary concert, FANTASIA, was originally set to take place on January 22nd-23rd, 2022. However, a majority of the livers slated to participate on the second day tested positive for COVID in the week leading up to the concert. Combined with the fact that the prefecture the event venue was located in, Kanagawa, entering a quasi-lockdown state due to an unprecedented uptick of COVID cases, led to Anycolor postponing the entire event. It would later be rescheduled to September 30th - October 1st, which was coincidentally the evening before, as well as on the night of Day 1 of NijiFes 2022.
    • At approximately 0400 EDT on July 8, 2022, Rogers, a major telecom company and ISP in Canada, experienced a Canada-wide service outage affecting most of their customers across the nation, with outages still being reported even 36 hours after the factnote . This caused 3 out of the 6 Canada-based members of the English branch (Elira, Millie, and Enna) to be unable to stream for the entirety of July 8th and July 9th, leading to postponement of scheduled streams.
    • Hana Macchia's full-on 3D debut live stream, after she and Elira Pendora had shown off their 3D models live as a preview during NijiFest 2022, was originally scheduled for mid-October 2022, a few weeks after said event, but due to Hana falling ill, it was rescheduled to late December of the same year. On the week the re-scheduled debut however, it was announced that the debut would be delayed again due to unspecified reasons, with a new date not being given until late March of 2023: April 30th, 2023. Thankfully, the 3D debut would proceed as planned without a hitch.
    • NijiEN AR Live show was supposed to be on April 2023 but it was rescheduled to April 14, 2024 instead. The four livers (Nina, Mysta, Pomu, and Selen) who left the company around late 2023 to early 2024 are also removed from the roster of AR Live performers.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers:
    • Selen streamed the original version of Resident Evil 4 twice before abruptly putting her playthrough on an indefinite hiatus. It is almost certainly related to the voice acting, as she initially assumed that Resident Evil 4's lack of Japanese voice acting gave her the green light to bypass Capcom's limit on streaming the English dubs of Resident Evil games and later stated that fans "can put two-and-two together" when asked about why she dropped the game.
    • Starting in May 2022, a France-based Discord group of trolls initiated a YouTube-wide wave of bots with sexually explicit profile pictures spamming obscene messages on a streamer's chat, usually targeting VTubers in a bid to trigger YouTube's algorithm and terminate them. Sukoya Kana was among the targeted Livers, and had to wait a few days to recover her channel. Mashiro Meme was also caught in the crossfire, and his ban appeal was rejected, necessitating the creation of a new channel.
  • Troubled Production: The three ladies of ILUNA had a rough time around their debuts:
    • Maria fell incredibly ill pre-debut, to the extent that management offered to let her debut separate from the others. It was bad enough that she couldn't speak her line in Aia's lore video, forcing Aia to try to mimic her voice.
    • Aia also fell ill, contracting COVID-19 sometime before debut, and developed a severe cough that lasted for her first few weeks of streaming. Due to financial concerns, she decided to draw her own lore video, which she describes as extremely stressful. Her initial internet setup could not handle a streaming resolution higher than 720p, below the standard for most other livers. Finally, she mentions having almost no streaming experience prior to Nijisanji, which forced her to learn much about the job (technical-wise and etiquette-wise) on the fly.
    • Scarle was in good health, but her internet struggled heavily during her debut resulting in obscene amounts of lag. Her model also turned out to be a double-edged sword, as it makes her a constant target for YouTube's automated moderation and therefore especially prone to having streams demonetized.
  • What Could Have Been: Now has its own dedicated subpage.
  • Why the Fandom Can't Have Nice Things:
    • In March 2023, ZEA Cornelia had to prematurely remove a VOD of one of her members'-only chat streams that she had done earlier that year due to certain things discussed in that stream being leaked to the public, one of which was her plans to graduate from Nijisanji sometime in 2023, something she would not publicly announce until early April that year.
    • A members'-only chatting stream that Pomu did 4 days of Lazulight's second anniversary, whose archive was made publicly viewable due to Pomu deciding to make all of her members'-only content publicly viewable during her graduation stream, ended up being made private by management within a few days afterward. This was due to backlash against management stemming from Pomu mentioning that management had denied a, in her words, a "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity, and her responding to a member of the Pomie Party mentioning "There's always next time" with "Maybe..........but not as Pomu". In retrospect, this was the first sign of Pomu wanting to, or already having submitted her request to graduate, and while she was not able to explicitly reveal what said opportunity was, the most likely guesses had been either a collab with the Metal Gear franchise (With that honour instead going to Calliope Mori of Hololive), or with one of Pomu's favorite idol groups, Niji no Conquistador.
