Trivia tropes for Luz Clawthorne

Trivia With Their Own Pages

  • Acting for Two: In addition to the original show's example with King and Hooty sharing an actor, the Reunion Falls arc for Chapters 18-20 features King interacting heavily with Stan Pines. Both characters are voiced by Alex Hirsch in their respective shows. There are also some cases due to Hypothetical Casting:
    • Skara and her mother Calypso are both voiced by Kimberly Brooks.
    • The confirmation of Keith David voicing Baron Samedi falls under this trope, as he interacts with Dr. Facilier (whom David voiced in The Princess and the Frog) in "Chapter 46: Escape".
    • In "Chapter 86: Closing the Gates", Amity interacts with Tinker Bell, both characters being voiced by Mae Whitman in their respective series. She later interacts with Rose.
    • In Chapter 101 Emira and Loona, two characters both voiced by Erica Lindbeck, Speak in Unison with the similar vocal tone being lampshaded in-universe.
  • Approval of God: Both authors have given their appreciation toward Crash X Fusion for all his hard work from the tropes page to his character designs. They also approve of the intro sequences he made, so much so that Buck was inspired to make his own intros: one for the first What If? chapter, another for a Role Swap Au closer to canon where Luz and Willow switch places (which he made just for the fun of it).
  • Blooper:
    • When "Chapter 43: Unemployment Filing" was first published, Malphas was first mentioned by name as "Dryfus" due to an auto-correct error. This mistake was fixed by the next chapter's publishing.
    • "Chapter 56: Going Through Changes" shows Goregon's name as "Goredon", a Punny Name on "Gordon" and "gore". This error has not been fixed as of recent updates.
  • Creator's Favorite:
    • Amity is JP's favorite character to write for, with other "traumatized bad girls" ripe for developmentnote  being Luz, Eda, Boscha, Emira and Nina Fangs.
    • Both authors are very fond of Donna and Nina due to their storyline and relationship, as well as Calypso due to her development and Eve to a lesser extent for different reasons.
    • While unsure of his favorite character, Buck's favorite Ascended Extra is Lilith as he enjoys expanding on her character arc, backstory and relationships.
    • Buck enjoys how Abigail and Emily have been fleshed out while JP has some favoritism for Lindsay due to her being based off of Fluttershy while considering Kitsuni and Felicia fun characters to write for.
  • Creator's Pest: Asi is JP's least favorite character to write for due to him being "edgier" than the rest of the cast.
  • Diagnosis of God: Following Chapter 94, both authors confirmed that Donna may be slightly autistic due to her struggle with change.
  • Fandom Nod:
    • "Chapter 49: Grandmother Knows Best" coins Lilith's cursed form as the "Raven Beast" In-Universe, which canon hasn't done.
    • "Chapter 58: The Ballad of Eda (Part 1)" plays with the idea that Boscha is a secret fan of the Good Witch Azura.
    • Buck admitted over messaging here that one of the reasons Cat claims victory over Tito (the others being her pressure point magic being the perfect way to defeat him and her Palisman being a mouse) in "Chapter 65: The Glandus War: Masks Off" was because he knew Crash X Fusion (the guy who created the tropes page and is a fan of Cat) would enjoy it.
    • Aphrodite calling Luz and Amity's relationship loved among the gods and having several fanfics dedicated to them in "Chapter 81: Back to the Falls" references how almost all The Owl House's fandom considers the girls a One True Pairing.
  • Flip-Flop of God: Regarding Mel's true identity, both authors had different opinions before officially confirming it after Chapter 82 came out. JP denied the truth about Mel being Mal to avoid spoilers, only for Buck to confirm it soon after. Once Chapter 83 was published, JP confirmed it as well only for "Chapter 88: Return of the Witchling" to reveal Mel's an OC based on Mal.
  • God Never Said That: As a result of miscommunication, it was mistakenly believed that Simon was voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson instead of Johnny Yong Bosch.
  • In Memoriam:
    • "Chapter 4: Incidents and Family Secrets" was reposted to include a dedication to Sean Connery after his death.
    • "Grom: The Musical (Part 2)" is a double tribute to Ed Asner and Norm Macdonald, both having perished by its posting (although the former died a month before it was posted.)
    • "Chapter 47: The Book of King" is dedicated to Betty White and Bob Saget.
    • "Going Through Changes" features an offscreen cameo by Iago shortly after Gilbert Gottfried's passing.
    • "That's the Way the Cookie Crumbles" was dedicated to Robert Coltrane after his passing. The chapter even includes a character named after him based on his role as Rubeus Hagrid.
    • Chapter 75 was dedicated to Kevin Conroy after his death 10 days prior to its publishing.
    • Chapter 76 has a dedication to singer Irene Cara, who died two days prior to the release. The chapter also introduces an OC named Ollie, who's based off of Jason David Frank (Yes, Tommy Oliver himself) and perished just over a week before.
    • Chapter 115 is dedicated to Johnny Harwick.
    • Chapter 116 has a double dedication to Bob Barker and Arleen Sorkin, both of whom died five days prior to the chapter's posting.
    • Chapter 117 is also doubly dedicated to Steve Harwell (the former Smash Mouth member having died of liver failure five days before publishing) and Jimmy Buffett (who died on September 1, 2023.)
    • Chapter 119 is dedicated to David McCallum and features a quote from Professor Paradox.
  • Inspiration for the Work: The Q&A chapters explain how the authors thought up certain ideas:
    • The first one states that JP thought up the scenario of Eda raising Luz during the first season run of The Owl House. Buck and reviewer ultimate-drax liked the idea, and drax suggested Luz growing up to be a hellraiser who'd go through Character Development to become a better person.
    • The second Q&A states that the Shared Universe aspect of the series began on simply incorporating myths and legends, but including Reunion Falls gave the authors a chance to include things that couldn't be found elsewhere.
  • Lying Creator: In regards to the true identities of both Director Gates and Mel, both authors have lied about them to keep the plot twists about them under wraps.
  • Meaningful Release Date:
    • Averted with the one-shot "Krampmus Shenanigans" which was posted on New Year's Eve 2020, six days after Christmas.
    • "Chapter 24: Human Date", which details the first half of Luz's synonymous date with Amity, was posted on August 1st, 2021, AKA National Girlfriends Day in the U.S. It was also posted the same day "Knock, Knock, Knocking on Hooty's Door" (the episode where the two became a couple, which aired the day before in the US) had aired in Canada and one year after "Understanding Willow" (which showed the first signs of the ship.)
    • "Grom: The Musical (Part 1)" was posted on 9/11/2021.
    • The penultimate chapter of Book 1, "Understanding Lilith", was published on October 13, 2021, the date of the story's first anniversary.
    • There are two side stories which were published on Halloween; "Somhaim Tales of the Boiling Isles" came out on Halloween 2021 while "LC Sidetrack: Party at the Bones Yard" was released a year later, but published on October 30.
    • An unintentional one: the first chapter of Book 2, "Recovering", was uploaded on November 30, 2021, Crash X Fusion's birthday.
    • Chapter 47 was posted the day after the 2 year anniversary of the show's premiere.
    • Fittingly, the first What If? chapter in 2W1F was released on April Fool's Day 2022. The second aired on the same day in 2023.
    • Chapter 58 was posted on Mother's Day 2022, appropriate considering the premise of the story, its themes of motherhood, and how the chapter has King making his adoption by Eda official.
    • The "Pride Special" wasn't posted on a holiday, but it was still uploaded during Pride Month.
    • "Chapter 72: Escape from Gatesfield" was posted two days before the first anniversary of when Book 2 first began.
    • "LC's Sidetrack: How Calypso Saved Krampmus" was actually published on Christmas Day 2022.
    • "Chapter 82: Shaping Up or Nothing" was published on New Year's Day 2023.
    • "Chapter 94: A Very Special Donna" was published on March 8, 2023 AKA International Women's Day.
    • The first chapter of the spinoff story, Helluva Dad, was published on Father's Day 2023. The next day (Juneteenth) saw the upload of a new sidetrack based around the holiday in question.
    • Chapter 120 was published on October 13, 2023, the series' third anniversary.
  • Missing Chapter: Buck has stated his goal to upload the series to DeviantArt. Likely due to busy schedules and the site's rule about the length of a chapter, only Book 1's prologue and "What If... Lilith Raised Luz?" have been uploaded along with a few brief excerpts from select chapters.
  • Missing Trailer Scene: The Book 2 Teaser at the end of Book 1 contains scenes that haven't been utilized in Book 2: the Clawthornes and Amity having a meeting with Ms. Traveler, Amity walking away from Lilith, cut lines from Eda and Anu Bist about how things have changed, Gus declaring he's going to change while Bria smirks at him and Mattholomule, Willow and Skara staring at each other, and cut conversations between Boscha & Tom and Luz & Raine.
  • Outdated by Canon: Willow was confirmed to be pansexual early in Book 2's run, and it would end up being canon in The Owl House following the series' conclusion.
  • Role Reprise: Guest characters from past Disney series and other franchises "retain" their present day voice actors.note
  • Schedule Slip: The series doesn't have a strict schedule, so chapters don't always come out as soon as people would expect. Heck, it rarely updates on both its main sites at the same time: chapters on AO3 are typically uploaded a day after they're put up on Fanfiction.net.
    • When the series first began, the prologue and the first four chapters were all uploaded to AO3 two weeks after their initial publishings.
    • Book 2's chapters fell into having a release every Friday in December 2021. However, Chapter 47 was released four days later than expected.
    • "Chapter 51: A Surprising Visitor" was released three weeks after Chapter 50 was.
    • In an inverted and invoked case, Chapter 54 was released 4 days after the What If? chapter.
    • Each chapter of the "Prelude to War" three-parter was published two weeks at a time.
    • A 3-week gap came about for "Glandus War: The Invasion" and "Turning Point" since Buck was in France.
    • Recently, almost a month passed between "Turning Point" and "Masks Off".
    • Subverted for "Sidetrack: Party at the Bones Yard" and the following chapters from "Tragedy at Eclipse Lake", which were posted within the standard 2-5 day schedule.
    • Two weeks passed between Chapters 114 and 115. Another two week gap occurred between Chapters 119 and 120, and it would've been longer had the authors not split the content of the latter so they could publish it on the series' third anniversary.
  • Series Hiatus: A month-long one occured between the first two books, at least for the main story. A trailer for Book 2, a Q&A chapter and "Somhaim Tales of the Boiling Isles" were released during the break.
  • Shrug of God:
    • When asked why Nicole calls Boscha "pink eyes" if she has her gray-blue ones from the show, Buck admits he isn't sure if it's an error he and JP never realized and corrected.
    • There's no confirmation about what track Athena was in but with the appearance of Boscha's parents in "Them's the Breaks, Kid", she could've been a potionist.
    • As Buck mixed up the color of Bria's hair (blue instead of purple), JP states they could either pass it off as indigo or say Levi might be colorblind and not know the difference between both colors.
    • It isn't clear if Toadstool and Toadie are an Official Couple yet.
    • Now that the Collector's a fae, there's a chance that the symbol on King's collar makes him invisible to other fae.
    • It's possible that Maya can see into Luz's memories in her mindscape.
    • According to JP, Officer Barns may or may not have a boyfriend who lives in a different part of Gatesfield than he does.
  • Similarly Named Works:
    • Chapter 18 is titled "Reunion", which is the name of the Amphibia season 1 finale. Chapter 34 also shares its name with an earlier episode, "The Domino Effect" and Chapter 64's aditional title is "Turning Point".
    • Chapter 46 is called "Escape", which is the name of both a season 3 episode of Thomas & Friends and one of the final episodes of Milo Murphy's Law.
    • Chapter 63 bears the additional title of "The Invasion", which is the name of the first half of an Avatar: The Last Airbender Multi-Part Episode, "The Day of Black Sun".
    • Chapter 85 holds the title "Fallen Angel", which is the name of an early episode of the 2003 iteration of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
  • Throw It In!:
    • During the story's early development, Amity being a spy for Lilith was suggested by Buck and JP, liking where it went, decided to use it.
    • Gus joining the Clawthornes in Gravity Falls in "Reunion" was so there'd be an Audience Surrogate to introduce the RF version of the town and its citizens.
    • Buck came up with the idea of Luz and Hunter knowing each other and being friends, which wasn't included initially.
    • After realizing they never addressed the outcome of what happened to Amelia's family after having their home destroyed, the authors resolved it in "Chapter 31: Have a Little Hex With My Friends".
    • Everytime something happens in a parent work (not just OH), JP and Buck will add it if they can make it work for the story. This explains the inclusions of Hunter, Raine, Vee, Dr. Frakes, Terri, Terra and Adrian so soon after (before in the case of Caleb (known as William here)) their televised debuts. This may also apply to Scratch.
    • The reason Eileen didn't appear during the H.A.S. meeting in "Whatever Happened to Anu Bist?" is because the authors forgot to write her in. As such, they gave her a Written-In Absence in the next chapter.
    • One reviewer asked the authors to write a one-shot crossover between Luz Clawthorne and witch versions of Rick and Morty. While the authors didn't have room in their schedule to devote an entire one-shot to it, they still gave Witch Rick a cameo in the teaser for Book 2 and a Vocal Cameo in the first proper chapter of Book 2 before eventually making him and his family recurring characters later in Book 2.
    • Because of fan demand, the authors decided to include a subplot focusing on Gravity Falls in "Chapter 57: No Big Deal". Their explanation was to conclude the arc of the Blind Eye Society as villains.
    • As a favor to Crash X Fusion (and to promote his DeviantArt page after its creation), the authors used a new design for Amity In-Universe in "The Ballad of Eda, Part 2".
    • Almost a week after "Chapter 61: Prelude to War, Part 2 " (which gave names to the remaining unnamed coven heads) was published, the names of the remaining coven heads were confirmed during Cissy Jones' post-episode livestream. The authors decided to combine their canon names with the names they gave them. This averts the One-Steve Limit that would have occured with Mason (the Construction head, who's renamed Ulrich) and Dipper (who's real name is Mason.)
    • When "To Serve" was first published, Crash X Fusion had mistaken a Dune reference for a Star Wars reference regarding the Spice Demons. In "The Glandus War: The Invasion", said demons had their designs based off the Pykes.
    • The Book 2 Q&A states that the use of Disney IP's besides the characters of Reunion Falls were to expand the story's universe because "it was fun, gave [the authors] the chance to do a bunch of crazy and cool stuff that they couldn't do elsewhere, and they were also trying to give the readers what they want."
    • It was announced in the author's notes of "Party at the Bones Yard" that a contest for incorporating OC's from readers would occur, and select OC's would be used if they can be fitted into the story.
    • "Chapter 70: Tragedy at Eclipse Lake" has Eda make a statement to Amity about life in the Owl House being unimaginable without her around. This line was supplied (unintentionally) by Crash and was used to set up the chapter's painful Downer Ending of Amity being seperated from her family by being stranded on Earth.
    • The idea to use the theory about Jackie Lynn Thomas secretly being a mermaid but making her half-mermaid was requested by reviewer WaterDragonMaverick back during Book 1.
    • Odalia wasn't originally going to appear in Chapter 78; the authors had the idea to have her show up at Lilith's party and rolled with it due to her Character Development.
    • When it came to designing an intro for the "Human Realm" arc (either being a single intro alternating between realms or two seperate intros focusing on each realm), Crash X Fusion created the "Intro Sequence Contest" as an alternative.
    • Rolling with Crash's prediction of Serpentina summoning a sea monster in Chapter 89, the authors rewrote the A-plot to have LOWTH battle the beast which made the previous A-plot (Luz and her friends having a relaxing beach day in Echo Creek) the new B-plot.
    • Cross Drakescale was never considered for the role of the new Golden Guard until Crash openly wondered about it. From there, the writers set him up as a potential Red Herring and halfway through Chapter 89, it was decided he would appear in uniform there for the first time with Chapter 92 showing that he and Emily Tricks were alternating on the role.
    • The Drakescale Clan wasn't submitted for the OC contest and were created when Buck asked if Cross had any family.
  • Trolling Creator:
    • In order to protect the twist that Angel was alive and the current Director Gates, co-writer Buck deceptively edited the Characters page to make it seem like Abigail and Director Gates were the same person and hide the fact that Abigail was a Red Herring. He eventually confessed to this with the release of "Northwest Party Crashers".
    • Initially, both writers informed certain reviewers that Mel was Mal only to reveal in their notes for Chapter 88 that she's actually an expy of the latter.
  • Two Voices, One Character: Ms. Traveler is voiced by Toks Olagundoye, but as Rosie, she's voiced by Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The Weird Sisters were meant to debut in a later storyline, but JP introduced them early.
    • "The Ballad of Eda" was originally just one chapter, but the authors decided to split it in two due to the length of "No Big Deal" before it and how the authors wanted to have the chapter out on Mother's Day.
    • Donna was originally going to be a minor character serving as a Satellite Love Interest to Nina.
    • Early on, the "Glandus War" arc was originally going to end with Emily being killed by the Boss pulling a You Have Failed Me move on her, while Nina would've been locked away into the Conformatorium for most of Book Two. Seeing Graye's personality in "Labyrinth Runners" gave them the idea to spare Emily so she could become Graye's apprentice instead and decide that Nina would stick around after the arc instead of being Put on a Bus because she was well received by the readers and they enjoyed writing her.
    • Heinz Doofenshmirtz and Perry the Platypus were originally going to appear in "Back to the Falls", but were cut from the chapter due to how much content there already was.
    • Vee was originally meant to forgive Lilith for not doing anything to help the basilisks in "Chapter 86: Closing the Gates", but the authors decided it would be more realistic if she didn't.
    • Had Stan and Mabel not been put on different buses, they would've had the following plots: Stan would end up punching Preston at some point and Mabel's therapy sessions would've been shown, the therapist also having Gideon (who ended up in juvie) as a patient. These moments later went to Wendy and Nora in "Those Gravity Falls Kids.
    • Puck, who was created by one of the authors long before Luz Clawthorne was written, was originally envisioned as a Caucasian character before he was brought over to the fic and his backstory as the Indian boy from A Midsummer Night's Dream was thought up.
    • According to the third Q&A;
      • "Kiss the Girl" was going to be used during a romantic moment between Willow and Skara in "Regretful Decisions" but was excluded since it couldn't be used naturally. It was later utilized in Chapter 108.
      • A gag at the end of Book 1 would see Belos choosing Steve as Lilith's replacement of the Emperor's Coven head.
      • Cross was originally just meant to be a background character; had he not been made a part of Emily's character arc, Emily would've remained Adrian's sole apprentice and would not receive as much prominence as she did.
      • Before Trini was created, Luz not being a true cambion wasn't thought up until their final confrontation was being planned out.
    • Book 2 was originally going to end at Chapter 140 for a total of 100 chapters, but the writers decided to end it at Chapter 142 for better pacing.
  • Word of Gay: Like Luz, Wendy and the recently confirmed Sasha, Lilith (contrasting her recently confirmed asexuality), Odalia, Skara, Viney, and Mabel are all bisexual with Star being officially confirmed as such. Donna's character bio confirms her to be bi as well.
    • Boscha, Edric, Danny Dilburn, and Zee Drakescale are all pansexual.
    • Emira and Vee are both lesbians as opposed to their Ambiguously Gay status.
    • Instead of being bi as well, Hunter is gay.
    • According to Buck, Alador is demisexual/demiromantic (although he doesn't know if he's straight or whichever other orientation, it's most likely straight demi since Odalia's the only person he ever loved).
    • Bo's parents, Suzy, Mark and Jason, are all in a polyamorous relationship. As such, her fathers are either bi or pan.
    • Larry is revealed to be gay in "Chapter 58: The Ballad of Eda (Part 1)". Part 2 confirms Nina Fangs is, too.
    • Gus replaces Lilith as the main character who's aromantic.
    • After reading Marcy's Journal: A Guide to Amphibia, both authors agreed that Terri is probably genderfluid and is comfortable with both female and gender-neutral pronouns. The same goes for Tamme Wishbone, and Ban also seems to be genderfluid, going by he/they pronouns.
    • Clara is a lesbian, as confirmed in Chapter 97.
    • According to the character designs for LOWTH, Beocrow is asexual, Veronica is pan, and Tyrone is demisexual.
    • Sheldon Snope and Teri Oscorne are both transgender characters, both born female and transitioning to male.
    • Riley Strange was born an intersex character.
    • Navy-Heart, who submitted Roxy Armstrong and Sarah Atos to the OC contest, confirmed that both girls are bisexual.
    • Regarding the other St. Epiderm students; Kyle is also bi, Peter doesn't use labels, Minerva is demisexual, and Felicia calls the girls from her former school "foxy".
    • When Shuffollower suggested Violet (Rose's sister) appear in the series, she was said to identify as a lesbian.
    • Buck thinks Emily doesn't use labels, but considers her a lesbian.
  • Write What You Know: JP and Buck includes as many Disney references as they can having grown up watching all the series that appear in the story.
    • Buck also has a love of Shakespeare, so a lot of characters are counterparts of those who appear in said work.
    • Ghost's habit of eating sentient thing is based off the same habit of Buck's cat.
    • Chapter 137: "Bubble Trouble" has the revelation that Abigail suffered a miscarriage with her twin children before Clara. JP has a close family member who experienced this a lot, giving a sympathetic shout out to any readers who know people that went through the same thing.
