Trivia / Kamen Rider Gotchard

Go To

  • Acting for Two:
    • This is the case with most of the Chemies, where one seiyuu voices several of them (Katsuyuki Konishi voicing Mechanichani, Renkingrobo, and Smaphone; Kazuya Ichijō voicing Golddash and Kamantis, to name a couple).
    • In addition to portraying Sabimaru, Rikiya Tomizono voices his AI partner Isaac.
    • Amon Kabe portrays both Ryo Kajiki and Kaguya's butler Butler (from Gotchard VS Legend), and provides the voice of Firemars.
    • Alisa Sakimaki portrays Lachesis, in addition to providing the voice of Buglesia.
    • Takaya Aoyagi portrays Starshine Hoshino in #28-#29, and also voices Grandsaturn and Ninetail.
    • Reiyo Matsumoto portrays Rinne and voices Mercurin.
    • Oto Abe portrays Renge and voices Kinkiravina.
    • Yasunari Fujibayashi portrays Supana and voices Jupitta.
  • Actor-Inspired Element: Supana's alchemist ring becoming purple was Yasunari Fujibayashi's idea. Originally, it was planned for him to get a red ring like what elite alchemists like Minato and Kyoka got.
  • Actor-Shared Background:
    • Renge is stated to be from Kansai, and speaks in that region's dialect; her actress, Oto Abe, is from Osaka.
    • Yukio Naya (Gouriki from #5) is a professional wrestler, just like his character.
    • Like her character Hijiri (from #9-#10), Ayane Kinoshita is from Kyoto Prefecture.
  • Approval of God: Ryuma Hashido, who plays Tasogare and performs his own stunts in the Eternal costume, was given the blessings of both Mitsuru Matsuoka, who played Katsumi Daido (aka the most famous and primary Kamen Rider Eternal), and Jun Watanabe, who was the original suit actor for Kamen Rider Eternal.
  • Celebrity Voice Actor: A variant, due to Japanese voice actors having a stronger celebrity culture than the west. While all of the other Chemies are voiced by established seiyuus, the Geats Chemy in the winter movie is voiced by Fubuki Shirakami, a Virtual YouTuber from hololive.
  • Content Leak:
    • Concept art of Legend's suit leaked before the series premiered through unknown means.
    • Legendary Legend and the Legend Kamen Riser were leaked from a classified toy catalog before more public scans of the device surfaced.
    • The same catalog leak also spoiled Nijigon and the fact that it occupies two EX cards, albeit with simpler protoype art.
  • Crossdressing Voices:
    • Rie Takahashi voices the boyish X-Wizard.
    • Fubuki Shirakami voices the Geats Chemy, which contains the spirit of a male dog named Constantine.
  • Dawson Casting: As part of their cameo in #30, 35-year-old Hirofumi Suzuki (Tsuyoshi Kijino/Kiji Brother) and 31-year-old Shinnosuke Takahashi (Sonoza) from Avataro Sentai Donbrothers portrayed high schoolers aptly named Suzuki and Takahashi respectively from Houtaro's high school Comedy Club.
  • Defictionalization:
    • After the airing of #11, Premium Bandai announced that parkas based on BunnyParka Wild Form would be made available for sale.
    • Hilariously, one of 2024's first trading card packs gave fans the cards featuring Odorippa and Kamantis after their diet changes.
    • Bandai later released Geryon's golden Rubik's cube.
  • Development Gag: After the Coronavirus 2019 Pandemic forced it to be written out, May 2023's Televi-Kun scans revealed Gotchard is set to feature a retread of what was supposed to be a fight between Kamen Riders Zero-Two and Ark-One.
  • Irony as She Is Cast: While both Fubuki Shirakami's avatar and the Geats Chemy are themed after kitsune, their secondary motifs are of opposite elements, with Fubuki being a snow fox and Geats as a whole being associated with the heat-oriented Boost Buckle.
  • Follow the Leader: Just like the Demons/Vail Driver and the Vision/Zillion Driver, the Dreadriver is another Driver used by an evil Rider displaying images formed by LEDs and shares a voice actor with a major antagonist.
  • Meme Acknowledgement: The comparisons fans made between Kamen Rider Legend and Twokaizer did not go unnoticed, and the actors for the respective characters even did the corresponding poses side-by-side in response.
  • Method Acting: Koichi Sakamoto showed Tōru Ōkawa (Zein) video clips of Kamen Rider Super-1 in the recording room, in order for the latter to imitate how Showa Riders call out their attacks.
  • Off-the-Shelf FX:
    • The physical prop used for Steamliner's shrunken form is the Action Chemy push-along toy of the Chemy.
    • Geryon's alchemical catalyst is obviously a Rubik's cube - the rounded corners indicate it as the more recent competitive (intended for rapid turning) variant.
  • The Other Darrin: Yuji Nakata replaces Yasuhiko Imai as Valvarad's suit actor from #8-onwards.
  • The Other Marty: Nanako Sakai replaces Yuki Miyazawa as Mimei!Glare's suit actress midway through the production of #33 since the latter also serves as the suit actress for Lachesis!Valvarad, and the two share a fight scene together.
  • Playing Against Type: Most of Rie Takahashi's characters tend to be light-hearted, mostly clumsy, and generally amicable. X Wizard is decidedly not one of them.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Much of the main cast mentioned their favorite Kamen Rider series in an interview with TV Guide.
  • Prop Recycling: Continuing a trend of prop recycling, many of Gotchard's forms are retools of other parts:
    • Gotchard VenomMariner's gauntlets are reused from Kamen Rider Build KirinCyclone (two where Build had one).
    • BurningGorilla's gauntlets are heavily retooled from Kamen Rider Vulcan Punching Kong.
    • DokkiriShovel and EnergyMaru reuse the same shoulder armor from VenomMariner.
    • As well, DokkiriShovel retools Kamen Rider Revi Kong Genome's gauntlets. These gauntlets were further retooled into OrochiShovel Custom claws.
    • Hicheslaus form reuses and recolors BurningGorilla's shoulders and the fans from VenomMariner.
    • Gotchard's Legend Rider forms reuses the following parts:
    • The prop used for the Chemy Stagvine is a cyan-colored Stag Phone, despite the actual Chemy's design looking nothing like it.
    • Marsphoenix recolors the Fourze Armor from Kamen Rider Zi-O, and recolors the Newton Gloves from Kamen Rider Ghost.
    • Dread's Bloody BB and Bloody UC are retooled from two props: Buramudo's guns from Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger and Wasp Woman's Wasp Fleuret from Kamen Rider Decade's movie.
    • Dread Type Two reuses the arm piece of Diablo, and the left trenchcoat from Kamen Rider Saber Dragonic Knight. The Bloody DO is also taken from the Triceratops Dopant from Kamen Rider Double.
    • One of the land-grabbers in #28 is wearing Ryuga Banjo's signature jacket.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: Clotho's first upgrade, which gives her clothes that cover more of her body, was done in part to facilitate filming scenes during the winter. Her second upgrade, on the other hand, was made so that she could participate in fight scenes more often without the need to transform into a Malgam as her actress, Kanon Miyahara, is an accomplished martial artist.
  • Role Reprise:
    • Masahiro Inoue provides a single voiced line for Kamen Rider Decade in Kamen Rider Gotchard VS Kamen Rider Legend. While they could've simply used stock audio, they reportedly reached out to him for that line. note
    • Tōru Ōkawa reprises the role of Zein from Kamen Rider Outsiders as part of the character's guest appearance in episode 33.
  • Spoiled by the Merchandise:
    • As the DX Gotchardriver's sounds are baked into the belt itself, it can be hacked by drawing barcodes onto card-sized paper and then inserting that instead of a Ride Chemy Card. This led to a complete list of cards and their combos being spoiled a month before the series even premiered, including 100 of the 101 Chemies (and revealing that the Level 10s and Fantastic/Cosmic cards play by different rules, even if we didn't know all the context), 36 Legend Ridersnote  and two for King-Ohger, some upgrades (Machwheel and two additional sets of Hopper and Liner cards, one at Level 10 and one that pairs with the originals to create double-Hopper and -Liner forms), and about a dozen additional cards that include the Christmas promotional cards and "Legend" (which would turn out to be Kamen Rider Legend).
    • The DX Gotchardriver has a rather large slot with a pin and IR reader on the top, making it very obvious that at least one of the upgrades would include an attachment-type device that slots in. (By the second quarter, we already had three in the Exgotchacalibur, Gotcharignitor/Valvaradriver, and Alchemisdriver.)
    • The Valvarusher toy would only recognize a card's general category, except for Vehicle and Occult cards; the fact that the Occult cards got Nominal Importance was our first hint as to Valvarad's eventual upgrade.
    • Kamen Rider Fire Gotchard and Kamen Rider Valvarad were revealed preemptively when the toys hit shelves early and photos of the packaging started to circulate.
    • Platina Gotchard got spoiled by fans after they began poking around with the Tenliner toy after it was released. Later leaked magazine scans eventually showed the helmet of the costume.
    • Legendary Legend was accidentally shown off prematurely in the reveal for Legend's Parallel Rare card, which portrays him holding the card used to unlock the form in the Legend Kamen Riser.
  • Throw It In!: According to the production notes for #33, Saigetsu transforming by having Kivat-bat II bite his neck like a vampire would was at his actor Katsuya Takagi's suggestion.
  • Underage Casting:
    • Reiyo Matsumuto was 15 when she portrayed the 17-year-old Rinne.
    • Atropos looks like a child but is stated to be older than Clotho and Lachesis, who look like adults. Her actress, Itono Okita, was only 8-9 years old at the time of filming.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • According to a magazine interview, the writers originally wanted the series to not have any major villains besides the Monsters of the Week (in the same vein as Cardcaptor Sakura) but later changed their minds at the last second. This would have made the series uninteresting to watch.
    • Sabimaru was meant to have a Virtual YouTuber avatar, but due to difficulties in creating it he ended up having an AI assistant instead.
    • Rinne was meant to be Houtarou's senior as an alchemist and was envisioned to be played by an older actress until Reiyo Matsumoto was cast.
    • According to Keiichi Hasegawa, #5 would've featured a full CGI battle where Houtarou uses Steamliner to stop the Yakuza from demolishing the wrestling gym with a dump truck, but this was ultimately scrapped due to budget constraints.
    • Nijigon's card art was originally going to be drawn in the standard artstyle of a basic card, according to a Content Leak. When it was finally announced, it gained its own rarity with a unique style, along with card variants of the other Chemies that use the same style.
  • Word of God: Head writer Keiichi Hasegawa stated on Twitter / X that this season was meant to be a homage to the Showa seasons — hence why it is noticeably Lighter and Softer than the previous season.
