Volume 1
- Aika gives Makoto a chapter of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run to read in chapter 1.
- Makoto attempts to "withdraw cooly" from Rias' bedroom after walking in on her naked.
- Makoto explains that “Would you die for me?” is less “Would you endure blistering winds and scorching deserts?” and more “The game was rigged from the start.”
- Makoto refers to the exorcists’ sword of light as “bootleg lightsabers" and says that Freed aims like a stormtrooper.
- Makoto mentions Leeroy Jenkins when Koneko decides to bust straight through the Sanctuary door.
- Michael tells Gabriel that Metatron had been watching Naruto and had been practicing "ninja techniques" ever since.
- Gabriel describes Shuri's eyes as "hazel and soft as clouds," a line from the song "Turning Japanese" by The Vapors.
Volume 2
- When Motohama asks about Akeno's three sizes, Makoto lists them as "Huge-Average-Probably Average"Motohama: C'mon. Be a bit more specific than that. That might be someone else's.
- Makoto states while training with Rias that he's "allergic to manual labor"
- When Makoto starts having trouble using his Power of Retribution, he tells Aika and Asia that he "lost his stuff."
- Chapter 2 begins with "And on that bombshell..."
- After being woken up from a nightmare by his waifu alarm clock, Makoto says that "Technology is incredible."
- Makoto uses Okuyasu's reaction to Tonio's cooking to compare his mother's tea with Akeno and Suzaku's.
- Halja's "Makoto Fujiwara, back from the dead. I shall soon remedy that" comment is similar to a line said by Claude Frollo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Volume 3
- Makoto exclaims "right in the plums!" after taking a dodgeball to the nuts.
- Makoto's narration says "let's see you grit those teeth" before he attempts to snap Yuuto out of his Heroic BSoD.
- Makoto tells Xenovia that he would get "killed 100 times" without their help.
- Makoto tells the Legendary Sage that he'll "be doing his panty thievery in Prison from now on."
- Saji mentions "Dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria!" when Makoto mentions them getting help from exorcists.
- When Freed ambushes them with Excalibur, Makoto tells him that he "knew something reeked of hypocrisy."
- When Yuuto finally joins the rest of the group to help fight Kokabiel, he says, "Kept you waiting, huh?"
- Yuuto says that he would show Valper and Freed justice with his Balance Breaker.
- Makoto later makes another reference to Stardust Crusaders in the same by listing one of the mistakes Kokabiel made as "you pissed her off."
Volume 4
- Makoto says that Yuma keeping the dress from their "first date" is "a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one."
- Iblis refers to Makoto as "the much-debated White Dragon Emperor" which Makoto later corrects to "the legendary White Dragon Emperor"
- When Akeno declares that she can't die until she confesses her love to Makoto, Iblis replies that she'll "die braver than most."
- When Serafall initiates the Big Damn Heroes moment in Chapter 6, she declares "Your savior is here!!"
- After Makoto ends up accidentally using Armor Break as The Nudifier for the second time, Koneko says that her "disappointment is immeasurable"
Volume 5
- While Makoto is brainstorming in the boys' hot spring about if there was another boy who was retconned out that was a time-stopping vampire, Aika chimes in from the girls' side that "You were just describing DIO, Makoto!"
- After Riser Phenex commends him for having a Valkyrie as part of his Battle Harem, Makoto suggests that collecting women for his harem is like collecting Pokémon.
- Freed exclaims "It's over! I have the high ground!" when Rahab reaches down to grab Exscalon.
- After Rahab cuts off his arm, Freed exclaims "Tis but a scratch!"
- While Diodora is being arrested, Makoto says "A man’s gotta know his limitations."
Volume 6
- Makoto and Serafall have a similar exchange to one from The Force AwakensSerafall: Alright, just act normal, don’t make a scene…
Makoto: I am acting normal.
Serafall: I’m talking to myself… - When Makoto confronts Zephyrdor at the Social, he asks Makoto, "What are you going to do – send me to Jesus!?”
- Chapter 2 introduces the character Korgull Naberius.
- Xenovia's statement that "If you’re gonna say you’re gonna defeat me, the deed should already be done" is similar to Prosciutto's philosophy from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind.
