Recap / Veronica Mars S 03 E 02 My Big Fat Greek Rush Week

Go To

After the discovery she was raped and had her head shaved, Parker is tearfully trying to explain what happened to a female officer. Meanwhile, Veronica and Mac, still in the bedroom, are kicking themselves for what happened; Veronica because she heard the rapist and didn't do anything, Mac because if she hadn't implied Parker was a slut, Veronica would have done something. Just when Veronica thinks it couldn't get worse, Lamb shows up. He snarks about Veronica's own rape before turning his attention to Parker. Parker had told the officer she went to a sorority party (Zeta Theta), but didn't remember anything after that, and she tells Lamb she doesn't even remember when she came home. Veronica, after taking a deep breath, says she thinks the rape happened when she came in to get the movie tickets (about quarter to midnight), and she didn't see anything but she heard breathing and buzzing (Lamb guesses it might have been an electric razor). Parker immediately picks up on what Veronica is saying, angrily tells her off, and storms off despite Veronica's efforts to apologize.

Meanwhile, Keith is in the desert, using a long branch as a cane, as he's limping and bruised. He gets the cane caught in an animal trap, and can't get it out.

A little later, in Wallace and Logan's sociology class, Dr. Kinny (Dan Castellaneta) is indicating torture has existed throughout history, and no matter how many people in his class claim they wouldn't torture someone, only a few of them are actually right. He then assigns a 20 page paper on the effects of prison and torture, but he does offer an alternative. Dr. Kinney proposes doing a variation of the Stanford Prison Experiment as part of his study on the relationship between prisoners and guards, the winning team (prisoners or guards) will be exempt from the paper, and the losers only have to write 10 pages. Wallace and Logan, among others, raise their hands to volunteer.

A little later, Wallace meets Veronica in his room, and Veronica decides to turn her guilt towards catching the rapist. First, though, she's going to see about a job at the school newspaper. Moe swings by and tells Wallace about a floor meeting that night to discuss the new safety rules that are being implemented in light of the rape. Wallace demurs, telling Moe about Dr. Kinny's experiment, and Moe reminisces about how it was a life-changer the experiment was for him before taking off.

Back at the desert, Cormac is tracking Keith, but he's in better shape, walking fine and carrying a large bottle of water, which he pauses to drink from. Keith, in the meantime, finds a ridge and makes his way up.

Meanwhile, at the school newspaper, Nish (Chastity Dotson) is looking through Veronica's portfolio while talking on the phone. She hangs up and compliments Veronica's photographs, particularly one of a cheerleader trying to fix her underwear; Veronica grins at the memory because the cheerleader TP'd her house in high school. Veronica is glad to get the opportunity at the paper, as the only alternative financial aid offered was working at the library. Nish shows Veronica a poster advertising Zeta Theta, and wants Veronica to pretend to rush the sorority so she can write an expose and confirm some of the rumors she's been hearing about the sorority. Veronica doesn't think she'd fit in, but Nish assures her she looks the part. She gives Veronica an invitation to a social that coming Saturday, where "tasteful floral dresses" are the dress code. Veronica still isn't convinced until Nish brings up a secret room where they allegedly make the girls strip in front of a two-way mirror while the fraternity guys watch, and she thinks this might have happened to Parker. Veronica says she'll do it.

Meanwhile, back in Mac and Parker's room, Parker tells Mac her parents are coming to pick her up, and mentions her mom didn't want her to come to college in the first place. Mac says being reunited with her family is a good thing, but doesn't look convinced.

Later, as "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" plays, Veronica heads over to the Zeta Theta party. Inside, a group of girls start singing Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" as Hallie (Keri Lynn Pratt) excitedly greets Veronica. She gives Veronica a name tag and another girl, Shania (Robyn Richards), asks for Veronica's purse, and says all will be explained later. Veronica puts on a smile, but inside, she can't wait to leave. Hallie offers Veronica a glass of lemonade, and she and Shania start gushing about the sorority. Marjorie (Rachel Lefevre) offers her a drink. She turns down Veronica's request for alcohol (against the rules), but steers Veronica away from the choir (which are now doing the sorority theme song, to the tune of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot"), which she thinks will curb Veronica's desire for alcohol. Marjorie also admits Shania can be a bit much. Karen (Mary Chris Wall) comes over and gently chides Marjorie for saying this, and Marjorie introduces her as the sorority's den mother.

Meanwhile, Dr. Kinny leads Wallace, Logan and several other students, including Julia (Delilah Andre) and Omar (Jonathan Halyalkar), a couple, to an unused dorm wing. He calls for the students whose social security numbers end in an even number, and they (including Wallace and Julia) step forward; they are the guards, and the other students are the prisoners. The rules are as follows; sleep deprivation is fine, but no physical abuse, and prisoners must have a certain amount of food per day (and one of the guards has to test it to make sure it's edible), but aren't allowed watches or any forms of communication (cell phones, computers). While he describes the rules, the "prisoners" get into striped shirts, while the "guards" wear green combat shirts. Wallace and Logan decide to make a Side Bet; loser has to streak across campus. Dr. Kinny calls the prisoners over and his TA shows them an address (116th Street and Jamison Boulevard) where a "bomb" is located. He then tells the guards they have 48 hours (till 6:02 pm Sunday) to find out where the "bomb" is, and if the prisoners want the experiment to end, all they have to do is give up the location. He leaves (while the TA observes), and Rafe (Rider Strong), one of the guards, orders the prisoners to their cell. As Omar is about to settle in one of the beds, Rafe orders the mattresses to be taken away, and even orders all of their books to be taken away so they can't study (Julia apologizes to Omar about this). Samuel (Samm Levine), one of the prisoners, wants to go to the bathroom, but Rafe decides they should all go together three times a day and eight hours apart. He tears into Samuel (especially when he discovers his last name is "Horshack", and storms off. When he and Wallace are outside, Wallace calls him on his remarks (especially for calling Samuel "the Jew"), but Rafe laughs and says he's only playing the part so they can all leave.

Meanwhile, Cormac is still walking confidently through the desert until he sees Vinnie's pen by a railroad track. He smiles, but as he walks towards the pen, he gets his foot caught in the same trap Keith avoided earlier.

Meanwhile, Veronica heads to her car, wanting to shake off the experience she had, when she notices flowers in her car and a note inviting her to a Theta Beta party that night.

Back in the desert, Liam finds Cormac, who's out of the trap but is bleeding and lying on the ground. Liam pulls a gun out, steps on Cormac's injured foot, and asks where the money Kendall stole from him is. Cormac admits he found some of the money, but doesn't know where the rest is. Liam doesn't believe him, and shoots Cormac dead (though we don't see it). Further away, Keith hears the shot and heads along the railway track when he sees a town in the distance.

That night, Veronica heads back to the Zeta Theta house, where a party is in full swing. Shania and Hallie excitedly greet Veronica, but Veronica, though she hides it, is more interested in the fact they are serving alcohol at this party (though of course she doesn't drink it). Hallie says she wants Veronica to meet some of the boys at the party, and brings her to one of the bartenders, who turns out to be...Dick (like the other bartenders, he's shirtless). Neither of them are pleased to see each other, but Veronica covers her displeasure and calls him "cute". Marjorie comes over and explains the taking of the purses; they would normally leave the invitations (and flowers) in the girls' dorm rooms, but since Veronica lives off-campus, they had to use her car. Marjorie then invites the president of the Pi Sigma fraternity over to them, who turns out to be Chip, and he remembers Veronica accusing him of rape. Veronica laughs, but is relieved when Chip heads off.

Meanwhile, Keith, on his last legs, manages to make it to Sheriff Clapton (Randy Mulkey), the sheriff of the town, and tells him he can take the sheriff to a crime scene where a murder took place.

Back at the party, Veronica is Playing Drunk and dancing with Hallie and Shania, to the enjoyment and amusement of the other girls. She notices a surveillance camera, pulls a chair over in front of it, gets up on the chair, and starts dancing on it. Marjorie and Chip, who have been standing together, walk over, pull Veronica off the chair, and over her protests, take her outside. Veronica gets her taser at the ready, but it turns out Marjorie is worried about Veronica being too drunk and losing "points" with the others, so she's arranged a Safe-Ride-Home cart, and Chip will wait with her until it arrives. Veronica is surprised as Marjorie heads back inside.

Meanwhile, in the "prison", the guards drop trays of food on the floor. Wallace goes to taste it and says it's delicious. Samuel says he can't eat it, and Rafe continues to verbally torment him.

Back in front of Zeta Theta House, Veronica pretends to throw up so Chip will avoid her. Fern shows up in the cart, and Veronica gets on as Chip tells Fern to take her to Mac's residence hall. As they drive off, Veronica tries to convince Fern she was only pretending, but Fern doesn't believe her and says Veronica should know better. Veronica asks if Fern picked up anyone from the Zeta Theta party the night before, and Fern admits she didn't, but there are other carts.

Back in the prison, the prisoners attempt to go to the bathroom. Samuel can't do it, and Rafe mocks him for it while Wallace looks on, disgusted, and Logan also looks on.

Meanwhile, Sheriff Clapton and his deputies have reached the cabin where Kendall was killed, but while they find evidence of the place being torn apart, Kendall's body isn't there, and there's no sign of blood. Keith, who's still not in great shape but has recovered somewhat, tells the sheriff Cormac was looking for money, and the sheriff guesses he didn't find any. Just then, a deputy comes in and says he's found blood. Keith looks at a painting that's been left behind and untouched.

Back at the prison, Logan is about to nod off when music starts to blast. Logan says he wants to confess, but it turns out he's lying. Rafe, who's furious, turns towards Samuel, and discovers Samuel's peed his pants. Rafe starts laughing, but Logan and another prisoner look worried.

The next morning, Veronica comes out of her bedroom when she notices Keith. She asks why he's sitting in the dark, and teases him about having a girl stashed somewhere when she notices how upset and hurt he looks. As she sits next to him and puts her arm around him, Keith starts to cry and confesses someone got hurt because he screwed up. Veronica can relate.

Meanwhile, Wallace tastes the prisoner's food again, and calls it delicious. Samuel says he can't eat it because it's pork. Rafe is about to tease him about this when he notices Samuel is wearing new sweatpants. He orders Samuel to say where he got them, and when he refuses, puts him in solitary confinement.

Meanwhile, in Parker's room, she and her mother are looking at wigs while Mac sadly watches. Parker's mother says her inability to choose a wig is another reason why she shouldn't be at college.

At the newspaper, Veronica tells Nish what she saw, and Nish says she needs to get into the room that the camera was in front of. Veronica admits she's thrown by the fact Marjorie left a message checking up on her, but since they're voting that evening at 7, she'll make a move then. She also mentions Parker might have been taken home in a Safe Ride cart, Nish calls to find out who might have driven Parker home...

...and a little later, Veronica is waiting in Moe's room when he comes in. She calls him out for not bringing up the fact he drove Parker home, and he admits she was "hammered", but denies having anything to do with it, and says he would have called the police had he known. He also says there was another girl in the cart who wasn't drunk (she just wanted a ride home) and who helped him carry Parker to her room.

Back at the prison, Rafe lets Samuel out of solitary (a janitor's closet). Once he's back in the cell, Logan pretends to congratulate Samuel on not cracking, but he and the other prisoners actually try to confuse him so that he'll forget the real location and give a fake one in case he cracks.

A little later, Veronica is at the Zeta Theta house, having confirmed there was a girl who helped Moe bring Parker to her room, and she was with Moe while Parker was raped. Karen brings Veronica a bottled drink, and Veronica apologizes for being "drunk". Karen assures her it's nothing to worry about, and says she can speak to the others on her behalf. As Karen goes off to do just that, Veronica goes to the desk and grabs some keys out of it. She notices the computer on the desk is tracking a camera inside what looks to be Karen's room, and she also notices a dog bed in the bathroom. Karen comes back in, Veronica lies that she was looking for a trash can, and Karen assures Veronica she's in.

That night, while Wallace and Julia are asleep outside the cell, Logan and the other prisoners sneak through the window outside. A little later, all of them are enjoying a nice meal in the college cafeteria, except for Samuel, who's fallen asleep. Veronica stops by and Logan jokes about getting a conjugal visit. Veronica tells him she has to break into someplace, and leaves. Rafe and the other guards show up, and order the prisoners to go back. He then yells at Wallace and Julia for allowing the escape to happen.

Meanwhile, Veronica heads back to the Zeta Theta house. She tapes over the camera overlooking the room and opens the door, only to discover a room full of marijuana plants. Veronica gapes in shock.

The next day, in the newspaper office, Nish praises Veronica's pictures, and gloats about getting the sorority house closed down. Veronica, however, doesn't look too happy.

In the bathroom of the prison, Rafe yells at Samuel until Samuel finally gives what he thinks is the right address. Logan and Omar both yell at him for doing so, but Rafe, feeling magnanimous, congratulates Samuel and goes to call Dr. Kinny.

In the Hearst parking lot, Veronica sees Marjorie by her car. Marjorie says there was a hidden camera that saw Veronica sneak in, and asks what Veronica was doing. Veronica confesses she was trying to find out who raped Parker, and Marjorie tells her the marijuana is Karen's; she has cancer, and the marijuana helped her deal with the aftereffects of the radiation treatments. Not only that, but if the story gets out, she'll lose her job and insurance, so Marjorie begs Veronica not to say anything.

Back at the prison, Rafe triumphantly gives Dr. Kinny the address. Unfortunately, it's the false address Logan gave Samuel, not the real one. Rafe, furious, orders Samuel back to solitary, and says he's going to get Logan somehow. Logan just smiles.

Meanwhile, still at her car, Veronica calls Nish and explains the situation, but Nish is unmoved, and says she's publishing the story. Veronica heads over to the Zeta Theta house, and tells Karen and Marjorie she's sincerely sorry, but the story is coming out despite her best efforts. Marjorie, smiling without humor, tells Veronica she was voted in, and closes the door. Veronica looks ashamed.

In Parker and Mac's room, Parker, wearing a bad wig her mother picked out, gives Mac the number where she can be reached at. Mac earnestly pleads for Parker not to leave, and tells her she'll have her back. Moved, Parker hugs her.

Later, at the prison, the prisoners celebrate when the clock turns 6:02. Wallace then asks Omar for the right address; Logan immediately senses it's a trap, but Omar gives it out. Dr. Kinny then comes in and congratulates the guards. He explains while Logan and the others snuck out, Wallace and Julia, who were only pretending to be asleep, changed the clock so it was 18 minutes slow. As Logan curses silently, Rafe turns on Wallace, wondering why no one told him. Wallace says they were counting on him to be a jerk, and it worked. Wallace salutes Logan, and despite himself, Logan smiles and nods at him.

The next morning, Keith greets Veronica while she looks at a school map on her laptop. She muses all of the rapes have taken place in a small area, Chip seems to be in the vicinity of where they took place, the Safe Ride Home rides may not live up to their name, and whoever the rapist is had access to Parker's keys.

At a museum, the director marvels at "Two Lovers", the painting from Kendall's cabin that Keith has brought in. In a very brief flashback, we see the scene of Kendall meeting with Keith just before he goes to the airport, only this time, we see she's showing him the painting. Back in the present, Keith confirms he wants the proceeds to go to the Neptune Food Bank.

Meanwhile, in sociology class, Wallace greets Samuel, and marvels at the fact Samuel is taking notes for Rafe. Samuel explains Rafe was just acting, and isn't really like that, but Wallace is skeptical. Samuel asks about Logan, and Wallace laughs they'll see him soon enough. Sure enough, when Dr. Kinny asks if the students who participated in the experiment have anything to say, Logan bursts in, wearing only a black eye mask. He runs up to Wallace, salutes him, and then runs out, while the rest of the class cheers him and Dr. Kinny looks resigned.

At the library, Veronica checks books out to a student. She glances at the school newspaper, which includes her article. Fern walks by and congratulates her, but Veronica doesn't look happy.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Bittersweet Ending
  • Call-Back: In "Drinkng the Kool-Aid," Veronica had investigated a cult growing the "ultimate cash crop," who turned out to be completely harmless. This time it really is marijuana, but still for harmless reasons.
  • The Chessmaster: Logan thinks he is, but it turns out to be Wallace and Julia.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Let's just say there were plenty of people rooting for Logan to lose the bet.
  • Foreshadowing: The Stanford Prison Experiment. Also, Rafe's dominance over Samuel foreshadows Mercer's dominance of Moe. Also, Hallie becomes important later. Finally, what Nish has "heard" about the sororities and fraternities on campus.
  • Genki Girl: Hallie and Shania fit this trope to a T.
Marjorie: And don't let (Shania) scare you away. Love her to death but she kinda looks at Rush Week as shopping for someone to borrow things from.
    • Veronica pretends to be one of these at the party that night.
  • Gratuitous Spanish:
Liam: (to Cormac) ¿Dónde está my money?!
  • I Call It "Vera": Veronica refers to her taser as "Mr. Sparky".
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Veronica's reaction when she first meets the Zeta Theta sisters, especially when they're singing.
  • Literary Allusion Title: The episode title is a play on My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
  • Mating Dance: Veronica pretends to be part of what she calls the "faux lesbian dance". Of course, it's just an act, even for Hallie and Shania (though they aren't Playing Drunk like Veronica is).
  • Mistaken for Junkie: As it turns out, Karen. It's all for medicinal purposes.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Veronica and Mac after they find out Parker was raped. Also, Veronica when she finds out what the marijuana was really for.
  • Shout-Out: Logan jokes the prisoners can go home by clicking their heels three times.
    • Hallie calls Dick a "lost" brother of Luke & Owen Wilson.
    • When Samuel refuses to eat the food, Rafe smarms that if he does eat it, he can grow up to be a real boy.
    • When Dr. Kinny tells Rafe he got the wrong information, you can hear someone yell, "D'oh"! It's unclear whether it was Dr. Kinny (which would make it an Actor Allusion) or someone else.
    • Veronica says to Keith, "Knowledge is power." Keith thinks she's quoting Nietzsche, but she claims she's actually quoting Schoolhouse Rock!.
    • Shout-Out to Shakespeare: Parker's mom says her father is extracting "a pound of flesh" from the school.
      • Similarly, Veronica says that "You're breaking out, I'm breaking in," when Logan invites her to join the prisoners at dinner, "Star-crossed."
  • Smug Snake: Lamb, of course, but also Nish - at least according to Veronica - and Rafe.
  • Waxing Lyrical: Rafe uses "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" as a means of torture, and when Logan "confesses", he quotes a line from the refrain ("Yes, I like pina coladas, and getting caught in the rain").
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: What the prison experiment devolves into.
