Recap / The Silverscale Arena S 2 E 18 The Creature From The Haunted Sea

Go To

"Chief Bogo is on the case to infiltrate a smuggling operation involving a wise-talking rat, the criminal cousin of Gazelle, and a heaping ton of foreign gold! He didn't expect two things. One, that he would be joined by Ed, who's bumbling might cost him his cover. Two, that the crooks would make up a story about a monster dwelling the waters they're traveling...and that said monster might turn out to be frightfully real..."

  • A Day in the Limelight: After being a contestant in one Arena and spending a side-story unconscious for most of it, this story has Chief Bogo as one of the protagonists of the episode.
  • Advertised Extra: One of the tagged characters for the story is Edd, but he is only mentioned by name a few times and has no role in the story whatsoever.
  • All Myths Are True: Invoked by Renzo who wants to kill the soldiers for the treasury and claim their deaths came from a monster from a local legend of a creature that kills anyone that disturbs his realm. Unfortunately, the legend turns out to be very real, as everyone finds out in the last chapter.
  • Almost Dead Guy: When Samuel calls Bogo about Renzo, he has been discovered, being chased and has been shot. He manages to survive long enough to tell Bogo where Renzo’s located and tells Bogo to go undercover as one of Renzo’s 'muscles' before getting caught and killed.
  • Asshole Victim: Every character killed by the creature had it coming in some way.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Just as the creature has Bogo, Ed, and Calypso cornered and is about to kill them, Xeanica uses a conch to grab the monster’s attention and sings a melody to it, which calms it down and has it return to the ocean.
  • Big "NO!": A sleep deprived Renzo and Mary-Belle shout this to Happy Jack when he asks if someone’s having a party over hearing the threesome between Bogo, Xeanica, and Calypso.
  • Black Sheep: Renzo Capetto, who is considered a disgrace to his own kind for how greedy he is.
  • Call-Back: When Eddy's convincing Ed to continue trying to nab the gold after Ed admits he's scared of the monster, Eddy reminds him that he's the same guy who teamed up with several killer robots and defeated a space dragon, so he's got this.
  • Cassandra Truth: When Bogo and Ed are surrounded by the remaining Cubuckian soldiers, they try to tell them of Renzo's plan to kill them and take the gold, with a bloodied rake floating above the water to seemingly prove it. Unfortunately, Renzo's able to convince them that the two are just lying.
  • The Cavalry Arrives Late: When Judy and Nick show up with the ZPD reinforcements to help Bogo bust Renzo's scheme, they come to the scene of the mangled bodies of the soldiers and the creature already gone.
  • Continuity Nod: Bogo would one day like to be introduced to this 'Isabelle' girl Judy keeps talking about, referencing a previous side-story.
  • Crying Wolf: When Ed witnesses the actual creature kill a soldier, he tries to warn everyone about it, but is blown off since they believe that the creature is just a made up story, or in Eddy's case, something from one of Ed's comics. The second chapter is even called "The Ed Who Cried Monster". He’s eventually proven right when the creature surfaces onto the beach in chapter 5 and slaughters the soldiers.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: No one, not even Ed, is able to make a dent into the creature when they encounter it. Our heroes and Renzo are only able to survive their encounter with it because of Xeanica's melody.
  • Death by Materialism: Everyone that tries to rescue the treasury from the wrecked ship ends up getting killed by the creature very quickly.
  • Death Glare: The creature has such a fearsome glare in his eyes that just looking into them brings insanity. Just ask Renzo.
  • Didn't Think This Through: After Bogo's talk with Ed in chapter two, he realizes that he should have called in a bunch of officers to swarm Renzo’s location after Bogo discovered his location...while deep in the middle of his undercover mission.
  • Dirty Coward: Colonel Cabeza, who when the creature surfaces on land and begins killing his soldiers, he tries to push several soldiers away to escape, only to get quickly killed by the creature.
  • Disconnected by Death: As Samuel is talking to Bogo about a plan to stop Renzo’s scheme by having Bogo go undercover, their call is ended by Samuel getting shot and killed.
  • Driven to Madness: Renzo, having looked into the creature’s eyes, becomes an utter maddened wreck, and is sent to an insane asylum at the end of the story.
  • Dope Slap: Bogo slaps Ed at the back of the head in chapter 4 when Ed agrees with Xeanica over the threat of the monster.
  • Ear Ache: Renzo in chapter 3 grabs Happy Jack’s ear and chastises him for seemingly killing a second soldier when he told him to only kill one.
  • FacePalm: Bogo does this several times, mostly over Ed doing or saying something stupid.
  • Giving Up on Logic: When Ed straightens himself like a stick and acts like a makeshift oar for Bogo so that their lifeboat doesn't sink from the weight of the two, Bogo decides not he’s not in the mood to question this.
  • Gosh Darn It to Heck!: When Ed’s warning everyone of the monster the first time, he tells them "Do not look into its eyes or you’ll be among the souls of the darned!"
  • Groin Attack: When Ed grabs Mary-Belle telling her they must hide from the monster, she kicks him in his "gravy pools" to get him to let go of her.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: The creature kills Mary-Belle by stabbing its claws deep into her chest, and causing her insides to spill into the ocean.
  • Impromptu Tracheotomy: Happy Jack kills a soldier by repeatedly stabbing into his neck with a rake.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: When Xeanica welcomes Ed and Bogo to Shark Bites, she forgot her top, exposing her breasts to them.
  • In-Series Nickname: Ed goes by 'Knothead' and Bogo goes by 'One-Eye' as part of their undercover disguises when they’re with Renzo's group.
  • Interrupted Intimacy: Bogo having sex with Judy is cut short when Bogo receives a call from Officer Samuel about some information regarding Renzo Capetto.
    • Calypso walks in on Bogo and Xeanica having sex, and then decides to join them in chapter 4.
  • Interspecies Romance: In addition to the already established relationship between the bull Bogo and the bunny Judy, there's also Renzo, a rat who is dating the gazelle Mary-Belle. There's also the couple of the orca prime Xeancia and the shark prime Calypso.
  • Ironic Last Words: When Mary-Belle tries to get Renzo to listen about her concerns over her brother not resurfacing, tries to play into his ego by telling him "Come on Renzo. Forget them. I want you to know that whoever you kill...whatever you do...I'll love you till the day I die." That's when the creature comes onto the beach and kills Mary-Belle.
  • Killed Offscreen: Happy Jack and the soldiers that went diving to retrieve the treasure in chapter 5 and don't resurface, with Jack's rake resurfacing to signify their deaths.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: When Bogo tells Ed to take care of the soldiers so they can be arrested later, Ed decides to uproot a palm tree and charge at Renzo and Mary-Belle screaming "CRUSH THE VILLAAAAAAIN!" This naturally leads to him getting surrounded by the remaining soldiers and both Ed and Bogo's cover being blown.
  • MacGyvering: Ed managed to make a radio out of a lunchbox, some tv antennae, and two hot dogs. Bogo's actually impressed with how a device was made with such implements.
  • Mauve Shirt: General Tostada, Colonel Cabeza, and Happy Jack, who are given names, but not much characterization.
  • Music Soothes the Savage Beast: Xeanica manages to get the creature to return to the ocean by singing a melody to it, which calms the monster down.
  • Mythology Gag: Ed, during his Leeroy Jenkins moment, lifts up yet another tree while crying out his intention to crush his enemy. Wouldn't be the first time he's done that, as shown in "It Came from Outer Ed".
  • Noodle Incident: Eddy sends Ed to grab some gold so that he can give Kevin his refund, though what Eddy has to refund him for isn't explained.
  • Odd Couple: This story has Chief Bogo, the strict, stubborn, no-nonsense chief of the ZPD who has to team up with the simpleminded Cloudcuckoolander Ed to stop Renzo's smuggling scheme.
  • Off with His Head!: Cabeza gets decapitated by the creature in the last chapter.
  • Porn with Plot: The story focuses on the duo of Bogo and Ed trying to stop a smuggling operation while unbeknownst to them, the threat of a monster that wants to kill everyone for disturbing its domain looms over them. There's also several sex scenes sprinkled into the story.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: According to Eddy, this is how Ed convinced him to let Ed bring his comics with him.
  • Red Shirt Army: The Cubuckian soldiers, as not only did Renzo plan on bumping them off so he can keep the treasury for himself, but they are all easily slaughtered by the creature.
  • The Remnant: Part of Renzo's gang for his scheme includes General Tostada, Colonel Cabeza, and several Cubuckian soldiers, who had fled Cubuck following a violent revolution with the treasury.
  • Right Through the Wall: As Bogo, Xeanica, and Calypso are having a threesome, Renzo, Mary-Belle, and Happy Jack are stuck listening to the noise in a nearby hotel room.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: For Eddy, who had sent Ed to Renzo's crew to grab some gold so Kevin doesn't beat him up as most of the gold was lost when the ship sank and no one could retrieve it. And even with the few pieces of gold Ed snagged when the creature came and dragged some coins ashore, Cubuckian currency is worth jack squat around the Cul-De-Sac.
  • Slimeball: Renzo Capetto, who gets hired by some remnant soldiers of the old Cubuckian regime to take them somewhere so they can plan a counter-revolution, with Renzo being promised 1/4th of the treasury as payment. Except not even that much isn't enough to satisfy his greed, as he conducts a plan to kill the soldiers and take the gold for himself. His greed is even why he's considered a disgrace to his own kind.
  • The Stinger: Following the "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue, there's one more paragraph detailing a future story of a man who has a love for the oceans but whose plans were filled with revenge and lust. And he had a formula to help him with this. The formula known as...ZAAT.
  • Super-Toughness: The titular Creature from the Sea, as not only do bullets have no effect on it, and when Ed slams a palm tree onto it, all that happens is that the palm tree breaks in half, with the creature still standing there unaffected. The closest anyone gets to making a dent on it is when Bogo manages to clock it in the face and knocks the monster onto its ass briefly.
  • Team Killer: Renzo conducts a plan to kill the Cubuckian soldiers so that he and his group can keep the treasury. Happy Jack kills one in his sleep, too.
  • Three-Way Sex: Bogo has a threesome with Xeanica and Calypso in chapter 4.
  • Verbal Backspace: When Renzo is introducing his group to the Cubuckian army and gets to Mary-Belle's brother:
Renzo: "Her brother is over there. We just call him 'Happy Jack'. The most local sucker-I mean...pal I've ever had."
  • Villainous Rescue: When Renzo is about to have the remaining Cubuckian soldiers execute Ed and Bogo, that's when the creature arrives on land and slaughters the soldiers, unintentionally saving our heroes.
  • "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: The story ends with an epilogue following what happened to every surviving character after the creature returns to the sea.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: The fanfic recreates the 1961 film "Creature from the Haunted Sea", but with Ed, Edd n Eddy, Zootopia, and Las Lindas characters.
