Jolly Lodgers

Original air date: 3/7/2020 (produced in 2019)

Squidward visits a hotel after his house becomes infested by sea urchins, but it turns out to be the same hotel holding a jellyfishing convention and carries an even bigger pest.

"Jolly Lodgers" contains examples of:

  • Advertised Extra: Kevin was advertised before the episode's airing, but he only appears in the background and doesn't speak.
  • Artistic License – Law: SpongeBob and Patrick should've been arrested for impersonating room service.
  • An Aesop:
    • If someone wants to be alone, give them the time they deserve; don't constantly disrupt them.
    • Don't try to force people to have fun or come to something with you; it'll only annoy them more.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
SpongeBob: Well, if you wanna be alone, don't go into the room behind you...
Squidward: Wait. Are you two in there already?!
SpongeBob: No, silly! That's where the Jellyfishing Convention is!
  • Big "NO!": Squidward lets one out when he gets trapped in the Jellyfishing Convention.
  • Book Ends: The episode starts with Squidward's house contaminated from a sea urchin infestation and put under quarantine. In the end, Squidward calls pest control and tells them Hotel Halibut is infested by "jellyfish enthusiasts", and in return, the hotel is under quarantine, and everyone, including SpongeBob and Patrick except for Squidward, are forced to evacuate.
  • Brick Joke: Patrick forgets who Squidward is upon meeting him in the hotel, and again near the end of the episode.
  • The Bus Came Back: Kevin, Dr. Manowar, and Jeffery Jellyfish from "I'm Your Biggest Fanatic" make silent cameos in this episode.
  • The Cameo: When Squidward is running back and forth only to see SpongeBob and Patrick in front of him, Mrs. Puff briefly appears and he gets scared by her for no reason.
  • The Cat Came Back: Squidward never gets to be alone, as wherever in Hotel Halibut he goes, SpongeBob and Patrick are already there, to the point they corner him in the halls until he enters Jelly-Con like they planned. This lasts until Squidward evacuates everyone in the end.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Dance Party Ending: Squidward celebrates in his hotel room after finally managing to get rid of the convention attendees.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Squidward.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: SpongeBob says this to Squidward upon seeing he's not enjoying the convention:
SpongeBob: Squidward, everyone loves you! Are you having the funnest fun fun fun time ever?
  • Everyone Has Standards: SpongeBob actually shows concern for Squidward when he doesn't make it out of the hotel in the end, despite him calling pest control on purpose to evacuate the hotel so he can have it all to himself.
  • Eye Pop: Squidward does a few of these when he sees SpongeBob and Patrick appearing in the hallways back and forth.
  • Failed a Spot Check:
    • Squidward completely failed to realize Hotel Halibut is hosting a jellyfishing convention — something SpongeBob and Patrick obsessively love — which he would've found out if he looked at the programmer before checking in.
    • Also when Squidward entered Hotel Halibut, he completely failed to notice the banner advertising the jellyfishing convention hanging over the entrance right above him.
  • Freak Out: Squidward when SpongeBob and Patrick appear all over the hotel. It gets progressively bigger with each encounter, and it reaches its highest point once he enters Jelly-Con.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: At one point, Squidward freaks out at the sight of Mrs. Puff for no reason.
  • Goofy Suit: Squidward wears a jellyfish costume to escape the convention. It even has a built in zapper.
  • Idea Bulb: Squidward's head briefly shapes into a lightbulb when he figures out a way to escape the convention.
  • Idiot Ball:
    • SpongeBob and Patrick have no excuse to not leave Squidward alone and keep showing up at his hotel activities, especially since the hotel is hosting the jellyfishing convention and they insist Squidward come to it with them.
    • For Squidward, he doesn't even bother to hire hotel security to keep Sponge and Pat under supervision so they don't follow him, nor does he even think to quickly check out of the hotel and find another one. Squidward also doesn't think to look at the hotel programmer for any events that Sponge and Pat would like, Jelly-Con for instance.
  • Innocently Insensitive: SpongeBob and Patrick have no clue Squidward wants to be alone and keep disobeying him, showing up in every hotel activity to the point of forcing him to the convention with them.
  • It's All About Me: SpongeBob and Patrick are more focused on the convention and keep following Squidward around the hotel, trying to convince him to go there, despite his pleas to just leave him alone.
  • Jerkass Ball: SpongeBob and Patrick were responsible for infesting Squidward's house with sea urchins; they later Prank Call his hotel room by pretending to be room service, sneak into his room, and repeatedly force him to attend the Jellyfishing Convention when he makes it clear that he's not interested. And no matter how many times he tells them to leave him alone, they keep disobeying him and annoying him to their own will until he finally attends, which was their plan all along.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: SpongeBob and Patrick get their comeuppance for ruining Squidward's alone time at Hotel Halibut (and apparently deliberately forcing him to attend the jellyfishing convention) when he calls pest control, claiming the hotel is invested with "jellyfish fanatics", filling the hotel with toxic gas which kicks everyone out.
  • Late to the Realization: Squidward doesn't realize until minutes after checking into Hotel Halibut that SpongeBob and Patrick are staying at the same hotel, because it was hosting a jellyfishing convention.
  • Leave Me Alone!: Squidward constantly shouts this to SpongeBob and Patrick. Naturally, they keep disobeying.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: The hotel manager is a fish version of Frank Nelson.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: SpongeBob and Patrick eventually become this, as no matter where Squidward goes, either they're already there or they beat him to it, to the point of even pulling a Forbidden Fruit on him so he comes to the convention.
  • Prank Call: SpongeBob gives one to Squidward, pretending to be room service with his voice disguised, so he and Patrick can sneak into his room.
  • Running Gag: Someone forming a conga line.
  • Shock and Awe: Squidward uses the jellyfish costume's zapper to electrocute the convention guests when they pursue him.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The scene where SpongeBob and Patrick appear at the end of the hallway is a reference to when the Grady Twins appear in The Shining, complete with Staggered Zoom and Scare Chords.
    • Basically SpongeBob and Patrick appearing everywhere Squidward goes takes inspiration from Droopy.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: SpongeBob and Patrick keep disobeying Squidward's pleas to leave him alone and show up in each of his hotel activities, trying to convince him to join the convention one way or another. And no matter what Squidward says, they refuse to take no for an answer.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Squidward succeeds in getting the convention attendees, including Sponge and Pat, out of the hotel, and celebrates with a one-man Dance Party Ending.

SpongeBob and Patrick are victims of a hoax and end up babysitting a grumpy old woman who tries to escape by all means.

"Biddy Sitting" contains examples of:

  • A Day in the Limelight: The episode primarily focuses on Mary's disheveled, skeletal mother from "Chocolate with Nuts".
  • Babysitting Episode: The episode focuses on SpongeBob and Patrick starting their own babysitting business.
  • Blank White Eyes: Patrick has these when he spaces out.
  • The Bus Came Back: The episode brings back the old woman and her even older mother from Season 3's "Chocolate with Nuts".
  • Captivity Harmonica: Patrick plays one while he and SpongeBob are in a cell made out of building blocks.
  • The Diaper Change: When SpongeBob and Patrick look after infant sextuplets, they change their diapers at one point.
  • Epic Fail: Patrick's attempt at a jailbreak.
  • Idea Bulb: Baby Prunes gets this when she comes up with an idea on how to escape the house.
  • Iris Out: The episode ends on one.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Squidward is right that SpongeBob and Patrick can't be trusted as babysitters.
  • Literal-Minded: Patrick proudly proclaims that his and SpongeBob's babysitting business means they sit on babies.
  • The Millstone: Patrick doesn't help take care of Baby Prunes. When SpongeBob goes to set up a bath for her, Patrick just zones out and accidentally winds up letting her out of the house.
  • Needlework Is for Old People: One of the places SpongeBob and Patrick look for Baby Prunes is a knitting circle.
  • New Neighbors As The Plot Demands: Right across from SpongeBob's house is an unnamed mother with a lot of kids. She's never been seen before or since.
  • Never Mess with Granny: Mary's mother (aka "Baby Prunes") turns out to be a total badass.
  • Oh, Crap!: SpongeBob is shocked when he reads the Mary's mother's birthday note and realizes she's an old woman.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: The name of Mary's mom is not given and is only known by the nickname "Baby Prunes" that SpongeBob and Patrick give her.
  • Plot Hole: SpongeBob and Patrick seem not to know who Mary's mother is despite meeting her before in "Chocolate with Nuts".
  • Tally Marks on the Prison Wall: SpongeBob makes tally marks inside the play jail that Baby Prunes built, only to check his watch and immediately break out.
  • Wham Shot: The birthday note for Mary's mother reading "Happy birthday to mother on her 137th birthday," causing SpongeBob to realize she's not a baby, but an old lady.
